Chapter 520: Chapter 520: A Powerful Slap in the Face (2)
’Those two girls were outstanding, but when it came to guts, they probably couldn’t hold a candle to Vera Xavier.’
Scott Sullivan silently gave Nathaniel Nathan a mental thumbs-up. ’Nathaniel really has great taste! The women he chooses are always the best.’
A manager next to him nudged him with his elbow. "Did you hear the news that’s shocked the entire company?"
Scott Sullivan smiled and nodded. The manager sighed, "I just don’t get it. How can Deputy General Manager Nathan be so indifferent to a beauty like Rowena Kirby?"
Rowena Kirby was also a vice general manager at the company.
Scott Sullivan smiled faintly. "Perhaps Vice General Manager Kirby just isn’t exceptional enough to capture Deputy General Manager Nathan’s heart."
"Oh, come on! I’ve never met a woman more exceptional than Vice General Manager Kirby," the manager lamented. "I heard Deputy General Manager Nathan is marrying someone from a small town. Probably some country bumpkin who’s never seen the world. I have no idea what he’s thinking, passing up a woman as brilliant and beautiful as Vice General Manager Kirby to marry some hick."
"That’s just because you haven’t been around," Scott Sullivan said with a smile. "There are plenty of exceptional women in the world; you just haven’t met them."
He walked away after saying his piece, not bothering to explain on Nathaniel Nathan’s behalf. ’Anyway, once Nathaniel brings Vera Xavier around for everyone to see, all these misunderstandings will clear up on their own.’
’They’re all in for a big surprise.’
’An ugly country bumpkin who’s never seen the world? What a joke! Who knows what idiot started that rumor.’
’Gossip really is a dangerous thing.’
Sheldon Caldwell also heard the news when he returned to the company that afternoon after completing a mission. He felt that his relationship with Nathaniel Nathan had improved significantly after their trip to Crestfall, so he jubilantly went looking for Nathaniel to discuss the Eight Diagrams of the matter.
He ended up searching all over before finally finding Nathaniel Nathan on the training grounds. But Nathaniel was back to his usual icy self, as if their friendly interactions in Crestfall had never even happened.
But Sheldon Caldwell was a persistent man. If Nathaniel wouldn’t talk Eight Diagrams with him, he’d just pester him until he did. Annoyed, Nathaniel finally said, "How about we have a match?"
Private fights weren’t allowed at the company, but official matches—the so-called "Grand Tournaments"—were.
Sheldon Caldwell immediately backed down. He could still vividly recall the feeling of one of Nathaniel Nathan’s rubber bullets hitting him square between the eyes during the last drill. The sensation had been absolutely hellish.
He pouted. "We’re civilized people. Is all this fighting and killing really necessary?"
Nathaniel Nathan shot him a look like he was an idiot. Sheldon felt as if his private thoughts had just been laid bare, a feeling that was a serious blow to a man’s ego.
So, Sheldon Caldwell tried a different tack. "How did Vera do on her college entrance exams?"
When he was in Crestfall, Vera Xavier had been taking her exams. He’d heard her scores were excellent, and it seemed the only time a cold fish like Nathaniel Nathan ever showed any emotion was when the subject was Vera Xavier.
Sure enough, Nathaniel Nathan replied nonchalantly, "None of your damn business."
"Hey, I’m just looking out for you!" Sheldon Caldwell said with a grin. "Look at you, you’ve got a girlfriend but you’re still all alone. It’s pathetic! If your Vera could get into a university here in Veridia, it would cure your lovesickness!"
That phrase, "your Vera," was music to Nathaniel’s ears. His expression softened slightly. "She is in Veridia."
