The man in the white shirt was Professor Brian Dixon from the Veridian College of History, and the one in the striped T-shirt was Professor Isaac Shawcross from the Veridian College of Liberal Arts.

Vera Xavier stood there, watching the game. The two men were evenly matched, though Professor Brian Dixon, playing with the black stones, had a slight advantage. When Professor Isaac Shawcross placed a stone, Vera commented from the sidelines, "Sir, if you make a move like that, you’re bound to lose."

’They didn’t know her; they were strangers. "Sir" was the most appropriate thing to call them.’

Isaac Shawcross looked up at her. "What nonsense are you spouting?"

Brian Dixon, on the other hand, said, "Young lady, a spectator shouldn’t comment on the game. Don’t you know that?"

Vera Xavier looked properly chastised. "You’re right, sir. I’ll be quiet now."

So Brian Dixon made his move, and Isaac Shawcross shot her a glare. She just giggled, saying nothing more.

The game ended. Isaac Shawcross had lost by two stones.

Isaac Shawcross shot Vera Xavier another glare. She just smiled and said, "What a coincidence."

The second game began. This time, Isaac Shawcross played with the black stones and went first. Halfway through the game, Vera Xavier spoke up again. "Sir with the black stones, you’re going to lose this game too."

Isaac Shawcross was furious. "What a thing to say, young lady! I’ll win this round just to prove you wrong!"

Brian Dixon, however, just laughed and said, "The young lady has a keen eye!"

When the game was over, Isaac Shawcross had lost by three stones.

This time, Isaac Shawcross had had enough. He asked Vera Xavier, "We were only halfway through that game. How did you know I was going to lose?"

Vera Xavier said earnestly, "I don’t know, either. It was just a feeling!"

Isaac Shawcross was so angry he could have spat blood. He glared at her and said, "A feeling? What kind of nonsense is that!"

Vera Xavier chuckled. "Feelings are a mysterious thing. I can’t explain it. I just felt that you were bound to lose after making that one wrong move."

"A wrong move?" Isaac Shawcross retorted, glaring at her. "You’re just a young lady—I doubt you even know how to play. What makes you so sure I made a mistake?"

"Just a feeling!" Vera Xavier said with a smile. "Don’t be angry, Sir. I was just speaking from intuition. You’re right, though. I may have studied the game for a little while, but my skills are nothing special. Please, you two continue. I promise I won’t say a word this time!"

Isaac Shawcross glanced at her. "So you have studied it for a bit, which means you at least know the game. Dixon, move aside. I’m playing a round with this young lady!"

Brian Dixon roared with laughter. "The young lady was just telling it like it is. What are you getting so worked up for?"

Despite his words, he moved out of the way, grabbing a small stool from the nearby stairwell to sit on.

Vera Xavier blinked. "Sir, you really want to play against me?"

"Of course," Isaac Shawcross huffed. "You predicted my loss two games in a row. Now I’d like to see just how good you really are!"

Vera Xavier smiled and looked at Isaac Shawcross. "Alright then. But if I happen to win, you can’t get angry, Sir!"

"You, beat me?" Isaac Shawcross scoffed. "Young lady, don’t get ahead of yourself. Watching a game and playing one are two completely different things."

Vera Xavier had to agree with that point. She nodded slightly and said, "But for some reason, I still have a feeling I can beat you this game, Sir."

Isaac Shawcross scoffed at her claim but unceremoniously picked up the black stones.

In Go, the player with the black stones moves first, so they are typically taken by the weaker player. Yet Isaac Shawcross took the black stones.
