Chapter 508: Chapter 508: We Meet Again (6)

Leo Wright was a smart man and immediately realized who Susan Caldwell was referring to. He unconsciously clenched his fists, then turned away to hide his complex emotions.

Susan Caldwell chuckled again. "I always thought it was strange—where did Vera Xavier get the nerve to speak to me like that? Now I know. It turns out she has Nathaniel Nathan backing her. What do you think would happen if she lost him, and I became the one with Nathaniel?"

Leo Wright’s fists clenched tighter. Forcibly suppressing his emotions, he said, "Then she’d have no one to rely on. She’d have nothing."

Susan Caldwell giggled. "Exactly. Just thinking about that outcome puts me in an exceptionally good mood."

’The identity she held originally belonged to Vera Xavier, and she would absolutely never allow Vera to return to the Caldwell Family. If she could steal Vera’s status as the eldest daughter of the Caldwell family back then, she could just as easily steal her man!’

’She’d always had a crush on Nathaniel Nathan, and now she had a perfectly justifiable reason to pursue him. The path forward was simple enough; she just needed to work toward her goal.’

Leo Wright reminded her, "If that man we met in Trellis was really Nathaniel Nathan, he seemed to treat Vera Xavier as someone special..."

"So what?" Susan Caldwell smiled faintly. "I have plenty of ways to make him fall for me."

Hearing this, Leo Wright was at a loss for words. He could only add, "According to the intel you gathered, Miss, Vera Xavier was the provincial top scorer and got into the Chinese Literature Department at Veridia University. You saw for yourself in Trellis—she’s not an easy person to deal with."

"So what if Vera is formidable? She has no connections or foundation," Susan Caldwell said dismissively. "Veridia is my turf. Do you really think she can gain any advantage here?"

Leo Wright looked at her without a word. Susan Caldwell continued, "I was careless last time in Trellis. She won’t get another chance."

Seeing her confident expression, Leo Wright could only murmur, "Of course. Vera Xavier is just some girl from the countryside. She’s certainly no match for you, Miss."

Susan Caldwell simply smiled at his words and said nothing.

Vera Xavier stood at the gates of Veridia University, her gaze softening as she looked up at the two words "Veridia University" hanging high above. This was the hallowed institution that students all over the country dreamed of attending, home to the nation’s finest professors. She, too, would study here, spending the best four years of her life within its walls.

She walked slowly along a tree-lined path. There were many other students like her visiting the campus, their eyes filled with eagerness and pride. Starting tomorrow, they would officially be students at the best university in the country.

Vera knew her days in Veridia wouldn’t be peaceful, ’but so what? She had never been one to be afraid!’

The little tree-lined path was long and winding, leading directly to the faculty residences of Veridia University. Half of the university’s modestly-paid professors lived here.

Under the shade of a tree, two refined-looking, middle-aged men were playing chess.

’She had seen both of these men in her past life, though they were a little younger now than when she had met them then.’

A small smile touched Vera’s lips. ’What a coincidence,’ she thought. ’I’m just taking a random stroll and I run into them. This must be what they call fate!’
