Chapter 507: Chapter 507: We Meet Again (5)

What Wesley Kane said perfectly matched what Rona Langdon had told Susan Caldwell. A chilling smile touched her lips. "It sounds like Vera Xavier is incredibly lucky."

"Tell me about it!" Wesley Kane chimed in. "The entire Nathan Family, young and old, is completely bewitched by her. Whether it’s the elders or the younger generation, they all hang on her every word. It just goes to show how deep her schemes run."

Susan Caldwell said slowly, "Does everyone in the Nathan Family really hang on her every word? I’m not so sure about that."

Wesley Kane looked over at her, a little surprised. She met his gaze and said, "To be frank, Vera Xavier has offended me. I dislike her immensely. After hearing what you’ve had to say, I think we can cooperate."

Wesley Kane’s eyes lit up. "That bitch Vera Xavier must be blind to have dared to offend even Ms. Caldwell! She’s gone way too far!"

He had come to see Susan Caldwell today with the sole intention of figuring out how to curry favor with her. Discovering they had a common enemy was an unexpected bonus!

Susan Caldwell said coolly, "So, from now on, you no longer need to fear Vera Xavier. She has the Nathan Family backing her, and you have our Caldwell Family backing you."

Wesley Kane said at once, "With your word, Ms. Caldwell, I no longer have to fear that bitch Vera Xavier! I can finally get my revenge!"

Susan Caldwell couldn’t care less whether the Kane Family got its revenge. But here was Wesley Kane, a free tool for the taking—it would be a waste not to use him. She gave a faint smile and said, "In that case, Mr. Kane, I look forward to our cooperation."

Wesley Kane quickly smiled and extended his hand. She merely glanced up at him, making no move to take it. Instead, she picked up her bag and gracefully stood to leave.

Wesley Kane froze, wanting to say something but not daring to.

Leo Wright, who had come with Susan Caldwell, chose that moment to say to Wesley Kane, "Know your place."

Having said his piece, Leo Wright followed Susan Caldwell out the door.

Wesley Kane stood there for a long moment before it finally sank in. He understood now. For Susan Caldwell to meet him was an act of condescension on her part. Even if they were "partners," he was merely her subordinate. Her status was so far above his that he wasn’t even qualified to shake her hand.

He ground his teeth, a bitter feeling rising within him, but he could only force it down. He knew he couldn’t afford to lose the opportunity Susan Caldwell represented.

So, even if Susan Caldwell was arrogant and loved putting on airs, he had no choice but to endure it.

He cursed under his breath. ’Who the hell does she think she is? One day, I’ll have you under me, begging for mercy!’

After getting into the car, Susan Caldwell said disdainfully, "He should really consider his own status. To think he wanted to shake my hand. Is he even worthy?"

Every man she’d ever met tried all sorts of ways to please her. After growing so accustomed to it, someone like Nathaniel Nathan, who was so cold toward her, seemed especially captivating.

She had been furious when Nathaniel Nathan treated her so frostily in Trellis, but now that she knew who he was, she felt a man of his status had every right to be so aloof.

Leo Wright chimed in, "He’s just a shortsighted nobody. You’re only using him to deal with Vera Xavier, Miss. Now that the target is clear, it’s a good thing."

Susan Caldwell said lightly, "Yes, I think so too. Besides, I made an unexpected discovery today."

Leo Wright looked at her in surprise. Propping her head on one hand, she said, "To think he’s *that* genius from the Nathan Family. It’s truly unexpected."
