"Oh? Is that so?" A flicker of interest appeared in Susan Caldwell’s eyes.
Rona Langdon had called Susan Caldwell before, mentioning she wanted to marry Vera Xavier off for money. However, she had never mentioned the family’s name. Susan hadn’t expected such a coincidence—that it would turn out to be this very Wesley Kane sitting before her.
Wesley Kane could see that Susan Caldwell was very interested in Vera Xavier’s affairs, so he recounted the history of their grievances, adding plenty of his own embellishments.
Of course, this history of grievances made no mention of him soliciting a prostitute, nor of the Kane Family’s ulterior motives. It also left out that he had paid people to go after Vera Xavier, and he most certainly concealed the incident where Vera Xavier brought Jack Judd and a group of thugs to crush one of his testicles. In his story, there was only Vera Xavier’s relentless persecution of him.
Susan Caldwell listened intently. She soon picked up on some other undertones in Wesley Kane’s words. Her gaze deepened, and her fingers tapped lightly on the tabletop.
After Wesley Kane finished, she asked him, "From the sound of it, the enmity between her and your family runs quite deep. Don’t you hate her?"
"Of course I hate her! Why wouldn’t I?" Wesley Kane sighed. "But she’s latched onto the Nathan Family now. With them backing her, there’s absolutely nothing I can do."
"The Nathan Family?" Susan Caldwell asked. "Which Nathan family?"
Wesley Kane replied, "Whether in Veridia or Crestfall, there’s only one family that comes to mind when you say ’the Nathan Family’!"
Susan Caldwell’s expression shifted slightly. ’That’s right. In Veridia, there weren’t many people with the surname Nathan to begin with, but whenever someone mentioned the Nathan Family, everyone thought of only one. With their power and status, even the Caldwell Family was a step below them.’
’The Nathan family had always been incredibly low-key, so there weren’t many rumors about them. The Nathans and the Caldwells had dealings, but their interactions were never more than superficial.’
’She was somewhat familiar with the Nathan Family, but she had only ever met Mr. and Mrs. Nathan. As for the so-called "once-in-a-century genius" of the younger generation, Nathaniel Nathan, she had never met him.’
But now, hearing what Wesley Kane said, she immediately recalled the young man she had met in Trellis—the one who was devastatingly handsome but as cold as ice, the one who had kept her a thousand miles away.
’The Nathan Family was different from the Caldwells. In her family, only Winter Sullivan and Sheldon Caldwell served in the military, whereas every single member of the Nathan Family was a soldier.’

Back then, Nathaniel Nathan had only announced his codename, Direwolf, in front of everyone. Susan Caldwell hadn’t known his real name, but now, after hearing what Wesley Kane said, the answer was on the tip of her tongue.
This would also explain why Nathaniel Nathan had been so completely unmoved when she had extended an olive branch to him back then.
’Nathaniel Nathan was poised to become the head of his generation in the Nathan Family. Why would he ever be swayed by her offer?’
She was filled with immense regret. ’I should have found a way to figure out his identity back then. If I had known who he was, I wouldn’t have made such a fool of myself in front of him.’
’At the time, she had just assumed that soldiers who carried out such dangerous missions must be people without any powerful backing. Only now did she realize how absurdly wrong she had been.’
She asked in a low voice, "How did Vera Xavier latch onto the Nathan Family?"
"She got ridiculously lucky. Master Nathan was having a heart attack when he happened to run into her. She had a few Rapid Heart Saving Pills on her and saved his life," Wesley Kane answered.
Trading a few Rapid Heart Saving Pills for the Nathan Family’s favor—in most people’s eyes, that was indeed a stroke of incredible luck.
