Chapter 505: Chapter 505: We Meet Again (3)
When Wesley Kane saw Vera Xavier’s beautiful smile, he was filled with an all-consuming hatred. He had only gone along with Jeremy Kane and Daisy Archer’s plan to marry her back then because she was passably attractive.
The marriage being called off was one thing, but for her to have ruined him like this! ’I will never let her get away with this!’
Wesley Kane felt that if he kept talking to her, he might just die of anger. He gave a cold snort and stormed off.
Vera Xavier arched an eyebrow and gave a faint smile.
Before coming to Veridia, she knew she would run into many people, both welcome and unwelcome. Still, she hadn’t expected to encounter Wesley Kane so soon.
Just as she was about to turn away, she caught a flash of pink fabric from a dress disappearing around the corner where Wesley Kane had gone.
Then she saw a figure she recognized from behind. It was Susan Caldwell.
Vera Xavier smiled coldly. ’How interesting. In my past life, those two barely knew each other, yet in this one, they’ve connected so early. This must be another consequence of my rebirth. So many people and things have changed!’
She turned and continued toward the school without a second glance, already knowing her new life in Veridia was going to be very eventful.
Wesley Kane followed Susan Caldwell into a café. In that era, cafés were not yet widespread; they were still a symbol of being fashionable.
All traces of the anger and ferocity he’d shown Vera Xavier had vanished. His face was plastered with an ingratiating smile as he said to Susan Caldwell, "Ms. Caldwell, you are every bit as poised and elegant as the rumors say. A true beauty."
Susan Caldwell shot him a disdainful glance. His features were quite handsome, but there was a lecherous glint in his eyes. ’People with eyes like that are rarely decent. Still, it doesn’t matter what kind of man he is. He won’t be able to cause any trouble for me or slip out of my control.’
The only reason she had sought out Wesley Kane was because she had happened to hear that he was from Crestfall and, conveniently, that he knew Vera Xavier.
She had seen his exchange with Vera Xavier just moments before. The anger in his eyes had been impossible to miss.
She asked lightly, "You know Vera Xavier?"
The person who arranged their meeting had only briefly touched on Susan Caldwell’s background before telling Wesley Kane to meet with her. He hadn’t said, however, why Susan Caldwell was interested in Vera Xavier.
The only reason he had come to see Susan Caldwell was that the contact had told him she commanded vast resources. With just a single word from her, his future prospects would be secured.
So when Wesley Kane heard her question, he was rather surprised and couldn’t help but ask in return, "You know Vera Xavier, too?"
Susan Caldwell’s eyebrow twitched. Wesley Kane immediately realized he was in no position to question her and quickly backpedaled. "I just never imagined Vera Xavier would be so fortunate as to know you, Ms. Caldwell. She certainly leads a charmed life, first latching onto the Nathan Family and now getting acquainted with you."
As he spoke, he was inwardly trying to gauge the relationship between Susan Caldwell and Vera Xavier. ’If they’re friends, the more I say, the more likely I am to say the wrong thing. But if they’re enemies... then this is my chance.’
He noticed that when he mentioned Vera Xavier’s "charmed life," an involuntary flicker of mockery appeared in Susan Caldwell’s eyes. He instantly understood: they were on opposing sides.
So he pressed on, "Speaking of Vera Xavier, she and I have some history, you could say. She almost became my wife."
