Chapter 495: Chapter 495: Being Kept (Part 1)

Vera Xavier immediately thought of something and curiously asked him, "You were sleeping at the time, and you weren’t even next to me. How did you know he was about to reach out and touch me? And how were you so sure it was him?"

To Nathaniel Nathan, her questions sounded a bit foolish. What kind of person was he? He didn’t need to see things like that; he could tell just by listening. Not to mention that weasel-faced man had been running his mouth so much. The target couldn’t have been more obvious.

So, he said flatly, "Those are just basic skills."

Vera was speechless. ’Just what kind of insane missions does Nathaniel usually handle? What sort of high-level judgment and skills do they require?’

Nathaniel said slowly, "There are many criminals in this world, and it’s not uncommon to find ones who are highly intelligent, skilled, and capable. If you want to win against them, you have to be even better. That’s why some basic abilities have become second nature by now."

To an ordinary person, these were vicious, irredeemable criminals. But to him, they were nothing.

His tone was calm, but Vera could hear the immense danger behind his words. ’With his family background, he could have easily avoided such dangerous missions. He could have just relied on his family’s name, done nothing at all, and lived a life of comfort.

But he hadn’t relied on his family’s protection. Instead, he had forged his own path—one that was incredibly arduous, yet commanded immense respect.’

She pursed her lips lightly, feeling that her earlier sulking over his remarks had gone too far. So she reached out, wrapped her arms around him, and said, "Nathaniel, you’re so amazing! I admire you so much!"

This wasn’t just flattery; it was praise straight from the heart.

She was deeply touched, even moved. But with a single sentence, he sent all those tender feelings packing: "If you think I’m amazing, a hug is hardly enough. You have to kiss me."

Vera had been on the receiving end of his teasing so much lately that her tolerance for it had increased dramatically. While still shy, she no longer blushed and got flustered by his words.

She gave his chest a light nip and muttered, "Shameless!"

The corner of Nathaniel’s mouth curled up. "Shame? Is that edible?" he said with extreme nonchalance.

Vera: "..."

’Just as I thought. You can’t show this man an ounce of affection. Give him an inch, and he’ll try to conquer the sky!’

’The problem is, the more time I spend with him, the deeper my feelings grow. My initial intention of just accepting the situation and slowly getting to know him is changing. Now, my own emotions are swayed by his.’

She loosened her embrace, intending to return to her own bunk, but he wrapped his arms around her in turn. "A man’s pride isn’t important in front of his wife," he said softly. "Vera, hold me for a little longer."

His voice held a rare gentleness. Against the roar of the train speeding through the night, it wasn’t easy to hear, yet Vera heard every word with perfect clarity. When he spoke with such vulnerability, she found she was completely unable to refuse him.

And so, her arms circled once more around his lean yet powerful waist.

What she didn’t see was the corner of Nathaniel’s mouth curving upward, a faint trace of smugness in his eyes. ’So, my silly little wife likes it when I speak softly, huh!’
