Chapter 620: Chapter 468: 1 Year of Slumber
Rona Rook, her superpower already exhausted, offered no resistance. She simply let go, allowing the two men to take the child.
It wasn’t that she was being strategic and knew when to back down. The truth was, Ray Cross and Jim Cross were infamous in the Cross family’s ancestral lands for their ruthlessness.
She wasn’t sure if the two would be swayed by her threats over a child who hadn’t been officially recognized by the family. With her spiritual power almost completely depleted, she didn’t dare take the gamble!
Lex Cross, seeing that Polly was unharmed, caught sight of Flora Bloom lying on the Golden Crow’s back. His gaze locked onto her. The Golden Crow landed not far from Lex Cross, obediently prostrating itself on the ground so that Flora Bloom could see him.
From where Lex Cross stood, it was impossible to reconcile the shattered body, which had stained the Golden Crow’s feathers completely red, with the woman he had so carefully protected and cherished.
They were bound by the Eternal Life Contract, so he knew she was still hanging on by a thread.
"Frost Ancestor, save her."
Frost Cross was proud and aloof. "There are millions of women in the world. Why bother with this one?"
Their exchange took but a moment. Seeing that Ray Cross and Jim Cross were only halfway to safety with Polly Cross, Rona Rook suddenly formed a wisp of green energy into a needle and sent it stabbing toward the child’s back.
Lex Cross’s body was on the verge of disintegrating, and Flora Bloom was at death’s door. When they both realized the sneak attack aimed at Polly, they were seized by a helpless fury.
Ray Cross and Jim Cross, being the closest, threw up a defensive shield with their superpowers, but it was useless.
It was Life Force, not a conventional attack. A Thunder Element shield would have no effect against it.
Just as the needle of energy was about to strike Polly, Lex Cross’s own body began to dissolve into motes of light. A black, devouring power, as dark as the deepest abyss, surged toward Polly.
However, someone was a step faster.
Neal Wallace was already grievously wounded himself. He saw Flora Bloom lying breathless on the Golden Crow’s back and Lex Cross’s body disintegrating, on the verge of vanishing completely. ’If something happens to Polly,’ he thought, ’what else of hers will be left in this world?’
The needle-like shaft of green Life Force pierced through Neal Wallace’s intercepting body, instantly draining him of all his own Life Force.
He fought to keep his eyes open, looking toward Flora Bloom. A genuine smile touched his lips, reminiscent of the fleeting, unconscious expressions she herself sometimes wore.
But the green Life System energy didn’t stop. Impeded by Neal Wallace’s body, its approach toward Polly had slowed considerably.
At last, Lex Cross’s Soul Consciousness reached Polly’s back.
When the green light struck Lex Cross’s soul—now free of his shattered body—it weakened significantly. It no longer had the power to break through his devouring energy to harm Polly.
Lex Cross’s Soul Consciousness, however, was in a perilous state. A bright, delicate, pearl-like point of light had taken root deep within it, constantly absorbing what little of his Soul Consciousness remained.
Flora Bloom seemed dead, yet she lingered, not quite breathing her last. Lex Cross’s body had been destroyed, but his Soul Consciousness stubbornly continued to sustain her, keeping her tethered to life by that final, single breath.
Of course, Ray Cross and the other two knew what was happening.
"You! You actually used the Eternal Life Contract with this native woman!" In a fit of frustrated rage, Ray Cross sent a bolt of lightning crashing down on Rona Rook, interrupting her superpower.
Rona Rook coughed up a mouthful of blood, now powerless to use any of her superpowers.
The two black-clad, masked War Gods saw the killing intent in Ray Cross’s eyes and knew Rona Rook was out of the fight. The members of the Cross family were all skilled combatants. In a three-on-two fight, they stood no chance.
"Withdraw!"
Their subspace inventories were filled with high-quality Energy Gemstones. In fact, calling them ’high-quality’ was an understatement; they were absolutely top-tier.
’Not only did we complete the mission, we made a huge score. Looks like we can ask the boss for a reward when we get back.’ Flora Bloom’s words still echoed in their minds. The two men glanced one last time in Flora Bloom’s direction and vanished in the blink of an eye.
Rona Rook shot a glare at her fleeing allies. ’If I don’t leave now,’ she thought, ’there’s no guarantee these three Cross family ancestors won’t try to avenge their descendant.’
"Heh... The Cross family certainly plays hardball! I, Rona Rook, concede!" With that, she mustered her final bit of strength and fled far into the distance.
’The Eternal Life Contract... Lex Cross must have been out of his mind to bind himself to that woman with such a contract.’
’No wonder Flora Bloom hadn’t died yet! But this also means that even if I do nothing, once Lex Cross’s Soul Consciousness is depleted, they’re both dead anyway!’
Freed from Rona Rook’s control, the lingering green Life Force was absorbed by Lex Cross’s remaining Soul Consciousness, strengthening it slightly. He tried to move closer to Flora Bloom, but his Soul Consciousness was too weak; he lacked the power to even attach himself to another person.
With the last of her awareness, Flora Bloom spoke to Lex Cross’s Soul Consciousness. Her voice was barely a whisper, faint and withered.
She was so tired, the pain so great it exhausted her very soul. Her personal dimension, with the Tree of Life at its center, had materialized in the real world, stationing itself over Morhaven. ’This is good,’ she thought.
