Chapter 496: Chapter 424: Corrupting Marina Goldsmith (3)
Flora Bloom cut right to the chase, calling out Winston Goldsmith by name. "I need Mr. Goldsmith to help me with something! So, can I borrow him for a little while?"
Oscar Owen asked uncertainly, "Don’t look at me. You’ll have to ask Mr. Goldsmith himself. Though, I am curious—what do you need his help with?"
Winston Goldsmith, a straightforward man from the mountains, said, "Ahem! Forget all this talk about ’borrowing.’ It’s just a favor, what’s the big deal?"
Although the people of Korsan Base were tough, the mountain folk were simple-hearted and very warm. Even in this apocalypse, they didn’t harbor the kind of deep-seated cunning among friends that was common between the scions of noble families in Argent.
"Here’s the deal: we came to invite Mr. Goldsmith to Morhaven Base to teach our Gold Ability Users there how to craft equipment.
While High-level Gold Ability Users can craft their own equipment, they still need a professional to mentor them on specific techniques and the overall process.
So, please don’t hold anything back, Mr. Goldsmith!"
"Huh? This..." Winston Goldsmith hadn’t expected this proposal from Flora Bloom, and for a moment, he was at a loss.
Just then, Oscar Owen’s mother, Lianne Kendall, suddenly appeared at Flora Bloom’s side, her face breaking into a wide smile. "Flora, you’re here!" She had actually been in the welcoming party the entire time, but had only just stepped forward.
She looked at Winston Goldsmith. "Mr. Goldsmith, Flora is like a daughter to me. What are you still hesitating for?"
Though Lianne Kendall’s words made her feel a bit conflicted, Flora Bloom graciously played along.
"Mr. Goldsmith, rest assured, if you come with me to Morhaven, Fisher can come too. What’s more, I promise you won’t want for anything when it comes to food and supplies.
And if you ever want to return to Korsan Base, I can bring you back anytime. With my flying pet, the trip only takes about as long as a nap. It’s very convenient."
When Marina Goldsmith first found out that Oscar Owen’s heart belonged to Flora Bloom, she had resented her presence. But after learning that Flora was devoted to Lex Cross and had even had his child, Marina had made her peace with it.
Besides, Flora Bloom had a certain charm: she was powerful but not arrogant, principled yet flexible. She was incredibly generous with her friends, and the vegetables she grew were so exceptionally crisp and delicious that she quickly won over Marina Goldsmith, a guileless girl who had spent her entire life in the mountains.
"Flora, do I have to go?"
Marina Goldsmith glanced over at Oscar Owen as she spoke. Flora Bloom took in the scene—it wasn’t hard to understand. She smiled. "I won’t force you if you don’t want to go. However, I’m worried Mr. Goldsmith will miss his daughter..." Flora turned to Winston Goldsmith. "Isn’t that right, Mr. Goldsmith?"
Winston Goldsmith’s gaze drifted from his daughter, Marina Goldsmith, to Oscar Owen. He cleared his throat. "That’s true. Alright, I’ll go with you to Morhaven for a while! But, if you want me to teach others my trade secrets for crafting equipment, you’ll have to show some real sincerity!"
Flora Bloom’s face lit up. "Don’t you worry, Mr. Goldsmith. Three meals a day, plus afternoon tea and late-night snacks. Fruits, vegetables, meat, drinks—even alcohol will be in unlimited supply."
At the word "alcohol," Winston Goldsmith visibly swallowed. "In that case, when do we leave?"
Flora Bloom smiled to herself. ’Alcohol is a hot commodity in the apocalypse. Not many men who have endured its hardships can resist the temptation.’
"Right away. You don’t need to pack anything; I have everything ready for you over there!"
Winston Goldsmith nodded with a calm air, then looked at Marina Goldsmith. "Fisher is coming with me."
The color drained from Marina Goldsmith’s face. "Dad! I’m not going! I want to stay here and help Big Mr. Owens!" She then ran to hide behind Oscar Owen.
Not knowing whether to laugh or cry, Oscar Owen just shook his head. He looked at Winston Goldsmith, embarrassed. "Mr. Goldsmith, this is..."
"I’m not going! I’m not going! Dad, I don’t want to go to that stupid Morhaven Base!"
Faced with Marina Goldsmith’s defiance, neither Oscar Owen nor her father, Winston Goldsmith, knew what to do.
Of course Flora Bloom knew Marina Goldsmith had feelings for Oscar Owen. She beckoned to Marina, and a curtain of mist enveloped them both so they could speak in private.
A moment later, the mist dissipated. The reluctant expression on Marina Goldsmith’s face was gone, replaced by an unprecedented seriousness.
She looked at Winston Goldsmith and said, "Dad, I’ve decided. I’m going to Morhaven Base with you!"
