Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 618 - 617: A Calming Pill

Chapter 618: Chapter 617: A Calming Pill

After sleeping a full night and day, Yan Feifan was thoroughly rested.

Brimming with energy, he sat at his desk while his sister and Su Ye were still resting. He began to study the surgical plans for two spinal canal tumor operations on Wednesday, as well as the plan for a brain tumor patient sent over by Dr. Kevin Vega...

Time flew by as he was immersed in his work.

Before he knew it, night had given way to day. Yan Feifan glanced at the digital clock on his desk. It was 5:01 AM.

Monday morning had arrived.

Yan Feifan looked out the window. The world seemed veiled in several layers of light gauze, and the buildings shrouded within looked somewhat indistinct.

Looking up, the sky was a pale blue, and he could faintly make out a few lingering stars.

Yan Feifan stood up from his chair, stretched his somewhat stiff body, and walked out of the bedroom.

He listened intently. Not a sound came from his sister’s room or the attic upstairs. Clearly, they were both still fast asleep.

He tiptoed through the living room, carefully made his way up to the attic, and then stepped out onto the rooftop terrace.

Stepping outside, Yan Feifan felt a wave of warm air wash over him, wrapping him snugly, yet it didn’t feel stuffy or dry.

’Autumn is here. The air is much drier now.’

As Yan Feifan casually stretched on the terrace, he noticed that across the street on the Bin University campus, early-rising students were already out for a run.

The cars on the street weren’t yet a ceaseless flow, but they came one after another, and buses rumbled past.

From somewhere within the residential complex, a baby’s cries drifted intermittently.

He looked around at the concrete buildings, one to two hundred meters tall, scattered in every direction.

’Not exactly a view that puts the mind at ease.’

Slightly disappointed, Yan Feifan did a quick ten-minute workout before returning to the living room, heading into his bedroom, and sitting back down at his desk.

He noticed the notification light on his phone was blinking.

Yan Feifan woke his phone’s screen and was surprised to see a message from Shen Daoran, sent just a few minutes earlier.

The message began with an apology for the disturbance, explaining that a very close friend was suddenly afflicted by perplexing symptoms.

The friend had elderly parents and young children and was riddled with anxiety and fear. He earnestly requested Mr. Yan to find time in his busy schedule for a consultation.

After reading the message, Yan Feifan called Shen Daoran.

The call connected after just one ring.

"Mr. Yan, I’m so sorry. Did I wake you?"

Before Yan Feifan could even respond, Shen Daoran hurried to explain, "I’m a light sleeper. I wake up around four every morning."

"After I wake up, I usually read a bit, or go over some scripts."

"When I woke up today, I couldn’t help but think again about my friend who came to me yesterday to share his worries."

"He said he wasn’t afraid of dying, but the thought of his elderly parents, his young child, and his frail wife has him worried sick."

"Sigh... I suppose that’s the plight of the middle-aged. So much responsibility on your shoulders, you can’t afford for anything to go wrong. You just can’t."

"Mr. Yan, I just got carried away and sent you that message impulsively, without thinking about the time. I hope you can forgive me."

Yan Feifan finally found an opening to speak. "Mr. Shen, please tell me about your friend’s specific condition."

"Oh, he’s a professor at the Central Academy of Drama. Forty-four years old."

"A little while ago..."

Shen Daoran paused, as if recalling the details and organizing his thoughts.

"He had just finished teaching a class and was on his way back to his office when he suddenly felt unwell. He said..."

"...there was a flashing white spot in the upper part of his right peripheral vision, like a firework."

"At first, he thought it was something in his surroundings, but when he rubbed his eyes, he realized the so-called point of light was getting bigger."

"What’s more terrifying is that he gradually lost vision in his right eye. Then, he was hit by a strong wave of nausea."

"While he was vomiting, his right hand and right foot went numb."

"These symptoms lasted for about ten to twenty minutes and then subsided. But about half an hour later, his head started to ache."

"A very bad pain, he said. It felt like someone had struck him on the back left side of his head. The headache lasted for over two hours."

"He went to the hospital and had a cranial MRI, a cardiac exam, and several other tests, but they didn’t find anything wrong."

"Mr. Yan, what do you think?"

Yan Feifan sounded puzzled. "Your friend’s symptoms sound like a classic case of a migraine with visual aura."

"Didn’t the doctors who examined him tell him that?"

Shen Daoran’s sheepish voice came over the phone. "They did. He went to three different hospitals for check-ups, and they all reached the same conclusion."

"The doctors told him that a migraine with visual aura is similar to a regular migraine, and there’s currently no effective treatment. The only thing he can do is manage his lifestyle and be careful to avoid triggering another attack."

"It’s just..."

Shen Daoran sighed softly over the phone. "My friend is terrified. He says there’s no history of migraines in his family."

"He’s forty-four years old and has never had a migraine before. For such a severe one to suddenly occur now..."

"He’s extremely worried it’s a symptom of some major underlying disease..."

’Great, another paranoid hypochondriac.’

Yan Feifan listened as Shen Daoran continued, "He went to three different hospitals for comprehensive physicals, and even though they didn’t find anything else, he’s still not convinced."

"He heard about you from me, Mr. Yan, and then looked you up and discovered you’re a true medical genius."

"So, he came to see me yesterday..."

Those words were quite pleasing to Yan Feifan’s ears.

’It meant that in others’ eyes, he had become a medical authority with the power to give a definitive opinion and put their minds at ease.’

’In that case, I can’t treat this casually.’

Yan Feifan mentally reviewed what Shen Daoran had said, then asked, "Which three hospitals did he go to?"

"Union Medical College Hospital, Baining Hospital, and the PLA General Hospital!"

’Damn, those are all top-tier hospitals in the country.’

Yan Feifan inwardly clicked his tongue.

’If all three of those hospitals couldn’t find anything, it’s highly unlikely there was a misdiagnosis.’

’I can’t just invent an illness for the man if there isn’t one.’

He considered for a moment, then asked, "Does he have any underlying health conditions?"

Shen Daoran replied softly, "No."

"My friend is normally very health-conscious. He exercises weekly and eats a healthy diet."

"He also gets regular physicals, and all his vitals and health indicators have always been normal."

"Oh, he does have pharyngitis!"

Shen Daoran elaborated, "It started a few months ago. It’s considered an occupational hazard for teachers."

"Mr. Yan, do you think you could arrange a time for my friend to come and see you?"

Yan Feifan mulled it over for a moment before saying frankly, "Mr. Shen, Union Medical College Hospital, the PLA General Hospital, and Baining Hospital are all among the best hospitals in the country."

"If they couldn’t find anything wrong, the chances that I will are minuscule."

"Your friend most likely just has migraines with visual aura and no other health issues."

"Coming to see me would just be a waste of time and money."

Shen Daoran let out a long sigh. "Mr. Yan, to be honest, I think so too. It’s just that my friend has become a bit obsessed with this; he just can’t let it go."

"Mr. Yan, tell me, is there any chance that all three hospitals missed something?"

Yan Feifan replied softly, "Missed diagnoses and oversights... no hospital can completely avoid them. Even I make mistakes."

"But the odds of three separate hospitals all missing the same thing are very, very slim."

"Of course, nothing is absolute. There are always oversights, or cases of not seeing what’s right under your nose..."

At this, Yan Feifan added a reminder, "Mr. Shen, perhaps your friend’s pharyngitis isn’t just pharyngitis. Or perhaps its symptoms are masking the signs of another illness."

"Here’s what I suggest: have your friend get a detailed pathological examination of the affected area in his throat..."

He added, "If that still doesn’t turn up anything, and your friend is still worried, then have him make a trip to see me. We’ll see if I can finally give him some peace of mind..."
