Chapter 619 - 618: Speaking Freely
Chapter 619: Chapter 618: Speaking Freely
Yan Feifan slept for over twenty-four hours straight. Although he felt pretty good physically and mentally, the side effects were significant.
It took him a full two days to get his sleep schedule back to normal, and he finally felt like his life and work were getting back on track.
At nearly eleven o’clock on Wednesday morning, Yan Feifan finished two intraspinal tumor puncture and injection procedures. When he returned to the Little Red House, he was surprised to find Li Yun, his contact from the relevant departments, waiting for him in his office.
"What is it?"
Li Yun, dressed in casual clothes, acknowledged him. "Mr. Yan, about the cat scratch fever bacterial infection you mentioned last time."
"At our suggestion, they administered a targeted treatment to the individual, and it has proven remarkably effective."
"Mr. Yan, this proves that the person’s mental illness was, in fact, induced by someone using the cat scratch fever bacterium."
Yan Feifan said flatly, "It’s also possible the guy was just unlucky. He could have been infected with *Bartonella henselae* from contact with a pet cat or dog, which then caused rare neurological damage."
Li Yun gave a faint smile. "Mr. Yan, given the nature of our work, we classify all low-probability events as deliberate acts."
After a brief pause, she asked tentatively, "Mr. Yan, could you tell us the method for inducing neurological damage with the cat scratch fever bacterium?"
Yan Feifan just stared at her coldly, saying nothing.
After ten or twenty seconds of them staring at each other, Li Yun was the first to blink. She chuckled. "Mr. Yan, if you’re not willing, we won’t force you."
She then asked, "Mr. Yan, can you give us the information on the person who made the post?"
"We want to verify if that person was recruited by that country’s intelligence agency and was involved in this incident."
Yan Feifan considered it for a moment, then picked up a pen and wrote a combination of letters and numbers on a notepad on his desk.
"This was the username he used for the post."
Yan Feifan added, "Based on his previous posts, he’s likely a white male who was working at a university research center in Massachusetts at the time."
Li Yun took the slip of paper, glanced at it, and put it away in her handbag.
"Thank you, Mr. Yan. The information you’ve provided will save us a significant amount of time on our investigation."
"Mr. Yan, there’s one more thing..."
Li Yun said slowly, "We’ve confirmed that the person who coerced Zhong Xinyi in Los Angeles is a fringe operative for a British intelligence agency."
"Our people accompanied Zhong Xinyi to two negotiations with them. Based on the information they let slip, our preliminary analysis suggests that an important figure in the United Kingdom is in urgent need of medical treatment."
Yan Feifan raised an eyebrow. "You want me to go to the United Kingdom?"
Li Yun quickly shook her head. "No! Absolutely not!"
"We won’t make the same mistake twice."
"Mr. Yan, you’re rarer than a giant panda, our national treasure. We would never put you in danger again."
"Here’s the situation..."
Li Yun explained, "We wanted to get your opinion on something first..."
With a serious expression, she said, "Mr. Yan, if you agree, our people will reveal their identities and negotiate directly with the other party in a semi-official capacity."
"We’ll tell them that you, Mr. Yan, can perform the surgery on the patient inside their embassy or consulate here in our country."
Li Yun added, "Of course, the surgical fee won’t be small. We’ll use the same standard as your trip to the United States: one million US dollars."
"Mr. Yan, what do you think?"
Yan Feifan considered this for a moment. "I assume you’ll be attaching some additional conditions for them?"
Li Yun smiled. "Well, we have the upper hand now. Naturally, we can’t be doing good deeds for free."
"They call it ’mutual benefit’ between nations, but it’s really just a blatant exchange of interests, especially with the developed countries in Europe and America."
Li Yun emphasized, "Of course, Mr. Yan, your safety and your interests are our top priorities."
Yan Feifan nodded and said slowly, "I have a condition as well."
Li Yun gestured with her hand. "Mr. Yan, please, go ahead."
Yan Feifan said in a low voice, "Mr. Wang and his ex-wife, Zhong Xinyi."
Li Yun immediately understood what Yan Feifan meant. "Mr. Yan, our superiors have already applied for a pardon for Dr. Wang Chuan. It should be approved within a few days."
"As for Zhong Xinyi, who is overseas..."
Li Yun explained, "If she’s willing to return to China to build a career, her citizenship can be restored and her past transgressions will be overlooked."
"If she wishes to stay in the United States, we will help her expand her legitimate business ventures."
"However, we have no sway over the American justice system."
Yan Feifan nodded in understanding. "You can go negotiate with the British now."
At lunchtime, Yan Feifan received a call from Yu Youlian.
She said the multi-axis, variable-direction robotic surgical arm would be delivered to Binhai by evening and asked if he wanted it sent to his home or his office at the hospital.
Considering he would primarily be practicing with it at night, Yan Feifan asked for the robotic surgical arm to be delivered to Zuimo Court.
After lunch, Yan Feifan went to the Little Red House. He first met up with Dr. Kevin Vega, spoke briefly with the patient he had brought from the United States, and discussed the surgical plan.
During their conversation, they also briefly expressed their sorrow over Dr. Hakeman’s unfortunate passing.
Mr. Vega also tried to gauge whether Yan Feifan had any subsequent plans to return to the United States for more surgeries.
Upon learning that Yan Feifan had been badly shaken by the experience and wouldn’t be traveling abroad again anytime soon, Mr. Vega breathed a secret sigh of relief.
The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Thanks to the jaw-dropping postoperative recovery of the first few patients who returned to the United States, Mr. Vega was now in extremely high demand there.
Due to this scarcity, there was only one slot available every two weeks.
The brokerage fee Vega now charged had skyrocketed, already several times more than what he earned from performing the surgeries himself.
If Yan Feifan were to travel to the United States to perform surgeries frequently, it would undoubtedly cut into his lucrative income.
Mr. Vega was now filled with regret. ’Why hadn’t he set a longer term for their collaboration in the beginning? Or even a permanent one?’
This time, after completing the surgery, Mr. Vega would also be taking three young doctors from the Affiliated Hospital back to the United States as part of their collaborative exchange program.
He had already decided to put extra effort into their studies and training to show Yan Feifan and the Affiliated Hospital just how much he valued their collaboration and how sincere he was.
As for the recommendation letter Yan Feifan had asked him for...
The day before yesterday, after getting a brief report from his assistant on the Chinese student’s performance over the past few weeks, Vega had written him a glowing recommendation letter full of praise and admiration.
Vega knew one thing: ’The Chinese are subtle and believe in reciprocating favors. As long as I do my part, future collaborations are highly likely...’
Yan Feifan had no time to waste speculating about Vega’s petty calculations.
After finalizing the surgical plan with him, Yan Feifan returned to his office.
He found several more people waiting for him.
They introduced themselves as being from the Municipal Party Committee’s Organization Department and the Health Commission’s Personnel Division. They were there to solicit Yan Feifan’s opinions on several leaders at the Affiliated Hospital.
"Asking for my opinion?"
Yan Feifan looked astonished. "I’m just a resident. There are academicians and several hundred chief physicians above me."
"It’s hardly my turn to have a say, is it?"
Mr. Huang from the Municipal Party Committee’s Organization Department chuckled. "Mr. Yan, given that Mr. Meng Huaxin will soon be transferred from the Affiliated Hospital for personal reasons, we need to conduct in-depth research to establish a stable and efficient new leadership team for the hospital."
"Mr. Yan, you’ve been working at the Affiliated Hospital ever since you graduated. In a way, that makes you a hospital veteran."
"You’re also a genius surgeon, Mr. Yan, an outstanding representative of our young doctors. It’s only natural that you would be one of the people we consult."
Mr. Huang added encouragingly, "Mr. Yan, please speak your mind freely. Don’t hold back."
"This inquiry is strictly confidential. Its contents will only be provided to key leaders as a reference for their decision-making and will not be disclosed to the public."
Yan Feifan said, "Oh," and smiled. "Well, since you’re asking me to speak freely, I won’t be shy about recommending someone I’m close to..."
