Chapter 617 - 616: Almost Slept to Death
Chapter 617: Chapter 616: Almost Slept to Death
Yan Feifan was woken by a painfully full bladder. He had no idea how much time had passed, but he saw that it was still dark outside.
He rolled out of bed and opened the bedroom door, only to be blinded by the bright lights.
A second or two later, Yan Feifan’s eyes adjusted to the light, and he was taken aback by the sight before him.
Yan Feifan saw his sister, Yu Suye, his uncle, Wang Chuan, and Du Qiu sitting in the living room, all of them turning to look at him in unison.
Still a bit groggy, he asked worriedly, "Why are you all up talking in the middle of the night? Did something happen?"
"The middle of the night?"
Yan Ziruo stood up, her face stern. "Feifan, do you have any idea what time it is?"
’What time is it?’
Yan Feifan looked out the living room’s floor-to-ceiling window and confirmed that it was dark outside. He could see streetlights and the flickering neon lights in the distance.
His body aching from sleep, Yan Feifan ventured a guess. "Three or four in the morning? Or one or two?"
Seeing his sister show no reaction, Yan Feifan guessed again, "It couldn’t be ten or eleven at night, could it?"
’That can’t be right. I feel like I’ve been asleep for a long time!’
Hearing this, Yan Ziruo finally couldn’t hold it in anymore and shouted, "It’s 8:10 PM! It’s 8:10 PM on Sunday!"
"Feifan, you’ve slept for a full twenty-four hours."
"You scared us half to death."
’Slept through a night and then a whole day?’
’That can’t be possible, can it?’
Yan Feifan’s jaw dropped in astonishment.
The moment his concentration broke, the floodgates below showed signs of giving way.
On the verge of a torrential downpour, Yan Feifan had no time to verify the truth and bolted for the bathroom...
About twenty minutes later, having relieved himself, quickly washed up, and changed into a fresh set of pajamas, Yan Feifan emerged from the bathroom.
Now fully awake, he had confirmed that he had indeed slept for over twenty-four hours.
He had slept through the entire day on Sunday.
It left Yan Feifan feeling disoriented, as if he were suffering from jet lag or someone had hit the fast-forward button on his life.
Yan Feifan sat on the sofa, sipping the glass of milk Yu Suye had handed him while listening to his sister ramble on.
"You slept until one or two in the afternoon, and you still weren’t waking up. We couldn’t rouse you. Even Su Ye started to get worried and suggested taking you to the hospital."
"As it happened, your director came by. He examined you and said you were just extremely exhausted and your body was making up for it with compensatory rest."
At this point, Wang Chuan chimed in, "Feifan, if you hadn’t woken up soon, I would have started to get nervous myself. I wasn’t so sure either."
Yan Ziruo turned to question him. "Director, didn’t you say you’ve been so exhausted you’ve slept for long periods a few times yourself? And that the longest was almost thirty hours?"
Wang Chuan gave a sheepish laugh. "The longest I ever slept was closer to twenty hours. I was exaggerating a little so you wouldn’t worry so much."
Yan Ziruo huffed in annoyance, then turned to her brother. "Feifan, how do you feel? Do you feel any discomfort?"
Yan Feifan stretched a little, taking stock of his body. "I’m fine. I’ve just been really tired these past few days."
"Sis, you don’t need to worry."
Yu Suye added, "And there was probably the severe shock from the trip to the United States. This long sleep was likely his body’s way of finally processing it all."
Yan Feifan grunted in agreement and looked over at his uncle. "Uncle, where’s Mrs. Xia?"
"She’s busy at the shop."
Shu Lei replied, and then continued, "Feifan, someone from the court called me today..."
"Among the assets confiscated from those criminals, there’s a house on Jianshe Middle Road. They said I can have it as compensation. It’s worth over seven million on the market."
"If I want cash compensation, I’ll only get a little over six million."
"Oh," Yan Feifan said, pleased. "They’re finally at the compensation stage. Uncle, do you want the house or the cash?"
"The house, of course."
Yan Ziruo chimed in, "It’s worth over a million more! If you really don’t like it, worst case, you can just sell it."
Shu Lei sighed. "That’s true, but it belonged to that gang. It’ll be a huge hassle if their families start causing trouble, or if it turns out there are other liens on the property."
Yan Feifan smiled gently. "Uncle, there probably won’t be any major issues with the house. And you don’t have to worry about anyone causing a scene; the police will be on our side."
"Just discuss it with Mrs. Xia and decide together."
He took the opportunity to add, "Whether you take the cash or the house, it’s an unexpected windfall. Something you thought was lost for good has been returned."
"Uncle, you should cherish it and be content!"
Shu Lei beamed. "I started with nothing, and now I have a wife and millions to my name. I’m content. Very content."
"Feifan, Ruoruo, I will cherish it. I won’t be stupid and make the same mistakes again."
Just then, Yu Suye brought over a tray with several dishes. "Feifan, you haven’t eaten all day. I saved this for you."
"Hurry up and eat..."
Yan Feifan looked and saw Eight Treasure Congee, shrimp and egg custard, tea tree mushroom and spare rib stew, and glutinous rice-stuffed lotus root.
He hadn’t felt particularly hungry, but the moment the aroma of the food hit his nose, he was suddenly so ravenous he felt like his stomach was caving in. His stomach rumbled loudly.
He quickly picked up his chopsticks and dug in...
"Feifan, eat slower, no one is going to steal it from you!"
Yan Ziruo chided her brother before changing the subject. "Feifan, a total of eleven people came looking for you today."
"They were all doctors from other provinces and cities. I assume they were attendees from the observation symposium."
Yan Feifan swallowed the food in his mouth and asked, "What did they say?"
Yu Suye chuckled. "They said they admired your medical skills and wanted to discuss things further with you."
"They obviously had ulterior motives, probably hoping to get you to take on one of their patients."
"Your sister and I sent them all away."
Yan Feifan grunted, and his sister continued, "The big movie star, Shen Daoran, also called you."
"He said his friend’s daughter is recovering well. Her vision has improved to the equivalent of 0.7, and her headaches are gone."
"He wanted to thank you and invited you to visit him in Jingcheng."
Yan Feifan grunted and asked, "Just a thank you over the phone?"
Yan Ziruo chuckled. "Of course not. People don’t show up for no reason. He said a friend of his isn’t feeling well and was hoping you could take a look."
"A brain tumor? Or a spinal tumor?" Yan Feifan asked.
Yan Ziruo shook her head. "He didn’t specify. I just put him off by saying you’re incredibly busy and your schedule is packed."
She added with a pained look, "Look how exhausted you are. You were practically dead to the world today."
"Feifan, we’re not short on money anymore. Your health comes first."
"Sis, I didn’t actually feel that tired," Yan Feifan said reassuringly. "It was mostly from the scare I had in the United States."
"After that sleep, I’m genuinely back to one hundred percent."
Yan Ziruo admonished him, "I don’t care if you’re back to one hundred percent or not. For the time being, you need to take on less work if you can. Focus on resting up."
Yan Feifan snapped a military salute. "Yes, Sis!"
Yan Ziruo chuckled and poked her brother on the forehead.
"Just eat. Stop fooling around..."
After Yan Feifan finished eating, Wang Chuan said his goodbyes and left.
Yan Feifan walked him to the elevator.
"Director, has there been some progress?"
Wang Chuan nodded. "The authorities have contacted Xinyi. And they’ve also identified the person who was threatening her!"
"CIA? Or the FBI?"
Wang Chuan shook his head. "Neither. Surprisingly, it’s the British..."
