Chapter 616 - 615: Going Back on One’s Word
Chapter 616: Chapter 615: Going Back on One’s Word
The conference began at 10:30 AM and ran all the way until 5:00 PM.
Throughout the event, Yan Feifan, who was well aware of his severe lack of clinical experience, made a point to speak little and listen intently. He diligently absorbed the valuable information that emerged from the heated discussions and found the experience quite rewarding.
At 5:00 PM, everyone gathered for a large group photo, marking the successful conclusion of the two-day observational conference.
The visiting experts from around the country could either head home that night or stay another night at the Binhai Jinxiu Grand Hotel and leave the next day.
To avoid a repeat of what happened with Niu Yiding, Yan Feifan excused himself after the group photo, claiming he had a patient to attend to, and headed for the trauma surgery department.
The mother and her two children that Yu Suye had mentioned last night, the ones injured in the collision, had all been placed in the ICU for monitoring.
Yan Feifan reviewed their injury reports and treatment records. He discovered that the bone fractures and facial injuries Yu Suye had mentioned were trivial in comparison; they all currently suffered from much more severe internal organ damage.
Simply put, they weren’t out of the woods yet.
For now, their fractures and external wounds had only been given basic treatment to stop the bleeding and prevent them from worsening.
Yan Feifan would have to wait until they were past the critical stage and had recovered some of their strength before he could perform the reconstructive plastic surgery.
Yan Feifan noticed a boy who looked to be thirteen or fourteen kneeling in the hallway outside the family’s ICU room. His face was stained with tears.
Judging by the way he kept rubbing his knees and the pained expression on his face, he must have been kneeling for quite some time.
’This must be the kid who caused the accident,’ Yan Feifan thought.
This one accident hadn’t just caused immense physical harm to the mother and her children. The costs for their emergency care, subsequent treatment, recovery, and compensation would easily exceed three or four million yuan.
Yan Feifan seemed to recall that commercial auto insurance likely wouldn’t cover a situation like this.
The boy’s entire family would probably spend the rest of their lives working to pay for this one crash.
It was a lesson the boy would remember for the rest of his life.
After checking on the family, Yan Feifan was about to leave when he was spotted by Mrs. Yu, who roped him into staying in the trauma surgery department to perform a minor interventional procedure.
The patient was a sixteen-year-old youth.
Yan Feifan learned from the medical chart that the youth was a skateboarding enthusiast. An accident during practice had caused bruising and injury to his groin.
As time passed, the swelling in the youth’s groin gradually subsided, but his penis remained erect, showing no sign of shrinking or softening.
He endured this for three or four days until the pain in his penis intensified. Terrified, the youth could no longer bother with embarrassment and confessed to his parents, who rushed him to the Affiliated Hospital.
An examination revealed a blood clot in the youth’s penis, which was blocking a vein and severely obstructing blood flow out of the organ.
Yan Feifan performed an interventional vascular procedure to remove the clot, clear the vessel, and drain the congested blood, which allowed the youth’s penis to return to its normal size.
All in all, the youth had sought medical attention just in time. Another day or two, and his penis would have likely become necrotic.
At that point, the only permanent "cure" would have been amputation.
However, because he’d delayed treatment, the youth would need at least a year of recovery to regain his erectile function.
Fortunately, he was only sixteen, so his needs in "that department" hadn’t likely developed yet.
To prevent the youth from developing psychological trauma that could lead to psychogenic erectile dysfunction, Yan Feifan advised his parents to take him to a therapist for counseling...
It was nearly seven o’clock when Yan Feifan returned to his apartment in Zuimo Court.
After quickly washing up, he joined his sister and Yu Suye, who were waiting for him, in the dining room for dinner.
As they ate, the three chatted casually, and the topic of Zhuo Xingfa’s five-million-yuan incentive came up.
"Feifan, Mrs. Yu has been bringing it up for days, but there’s been no news or response. I think it’s a lost cause."
Yu Suye added, in a gossipy tone, "In the past few days, I myself have heard Qee Xiaodan and Zhuo Xingfa have two pretty heated arguments in his room."
"The future looks bleak for those two."
"As for the incentive, it’s probably off the table."
Yan Feifan said casually, "It’s fine if he doesn’t pay up. The phalloplasty procedure was developed because of him, and he already gave us a million in research funding beforehand."
"So, his contribution is already worth more than five million."
He then added, "Su Ye, can you try to persuade Mrs. Yu for me? Tell her not to provoke Mrs. Qin anymore."
"Mrs. Qin is in a really tough spot, stuck in the middle."
Yu Suye hummed in agreement, then chuckled. "Mrs. Yu actually knows what she’s doing."
"Don’t be fooled by how she and Mrs. Qin seem to despise each other and are always trading barbs. They’re basically an odd couple of best friends."
Yan Ziruo ladled another bowl of soup for Yan Feifan and said indignantly, "Feifan, if anything like this ever happens again, get an agreement in writing first."
"If he dares go back on his word, you can take the agreement to court and sue him."
Yu Suye chuckled. "Sis, patients rarely default on payments like this."
"If word got out that someone reneged on a promise for life-saving money, their reputation would be completely ruined. Who would dare to do business or even be friends with them?"
"Besides, can he guarantee that he and his family will never get sick or have an accident again?"
"As for Zhuo Xingfa’s case..."
Yu Suye snorted in contempt and said menacingly, "This phalloplasty procedure is still being refined. It’s a long way from perfect."
"If he breaks his promise, we can just wash our hands of him and leave the hospital."
"He can find someone else for future ’maintenance’."
Yan Feifan smiled, then sighed. "It seems the toxic nodular goiter’s effect on Zhuo Xingfa’s personality is much more severe than I anticipated."
Yu Suye hummed in agreement. "You can tell just by the gloomy look on Qee Xiaodan’s face every time she leaves his room. She never smiles anymore. That guy is no longer the sunny, optimistic person he used to be."
"Maybe all the negative emotions that were suppressed by his illness are erupting all at once?"
Yan Feifan gave a noncommittal reply. "Perhaps..."
After dinner, the three of them cleared the table and cleaned the dining room, then moved to the living room to watch TV and chat.
The past week had been nothing short of thrilling and relentlessly busy for Yan Feifan.
Now that the conference was successfully over and tomorrow was Sunday, Yan Feifan felt as if a Chapter had closed and he could finally rest.
As his mind relaxed, his body grew lethargic.
He sat on the sofa, letting his body go limp as he leaned against Yu Suye. He felt too lazy to even lift a finger or say a single word.
A moment later, Yu Suye speared a small piece of apple with a fork and held it to Yan Feifan’s lips. To her surprise, he didn’t open his mouth.
Yu Suye took a closer look.
His breathing was shallow and his eyes were gently closed. The guy had already fallen asleep.
"Sis, Feifan’s asleep!"
Yan Ziruo picked up the remote, turned off the TV, and got up. "Feifan must be exhausted."
"Let’s give him a wipe-down so he can rest more comfortably."
"I have experience with this..."
