Chapter 605 - 604: Just Be Happy
Chapter 605: Chapter 604: Just Be Happy
A little after three in the afternoon, Pan Jichuan walked out of the office, seen off by Yan Feifan.
"Mr. Yan, please, don’t trouble yourself!"
Pan Jichuan bowed slightly again and said, "Thank you for your generous guidance. I’ve benefited greatly from it. It was a truly eye-opening experience, more enlightening than ten years of study."
Yan Feifan gave a small smile and said, "You don’t have to be so dramatic. I’m not that amazing."
He paused for two seconds, then added a piece of advice, "Dr. Pan, what I said isn’t necessarily all correct."
"True knowledge comes from practice. You have a decent foundation. With plenty of practice and hands-on experience, you can explore and develop a set of methods that suit you."
"What suits you is what’s best."
Pan Jichuan stood ramrod straight like a schoolboy, holding his things in both hands, and grunted a firm "Mm-hmm."
"Mr. Yan, I’ll work hard during this time to first correct the bad habits and flaws you pointed out, and then practice the techniques you taught me until they’re second nature."
He then asked with anticipation in his voice, "Mr. Yan, in the future, if I have questions, may I come and ask for your guidance when you’re free?"
Yan Feifan mulled it over for a moment, then said, "When I’m free, yes."
"Thank you, Mr. Yan! Thank you, Mr. Yan!"
Having received his approval, Pan Jichuan’s face was a picture of delight. He was so excited he kept bowing slightly and repeating his thanks.
After Yan Feifan turned and went back into his office, watching the door close in front of him, Pan Jichuan’s jaw dropped. He lifted the case with both hands and began to imitate a gorilla’s walk, letting out a low "HOOT HOOT" sound from his throat.
He was truly just too excited.
Knocking on that door today was perhaps the single best decision he had ever made in his life.
In the past two hours, Pan Jichuan felt he had gained an immense amount.
Besides teaching him a few techniques for suturing blood vessels in different situations, Yan Feifan had also pointed out some deviations in posture and method that he had unconsciously developed.
Although these were all minor, inconspicuous issues, as a second-generation doctor who had been immersed in medicine since childhood, Pan Jichuan knew their significance.
If these small problems weren’t overcome early on, they could become major obstacles—veritable tigers blocking his path—to becoming a renowned doctor in the future.
His father had taught him more than once.
As a surgeon, one must be rigorous and maintain high standards from the very beginning, until it becomes second nature.
The problem was, neither his father nor his supervising doctors during his residency rotations had noticed these issues in his technique. But Yan Feifan had.
’This is the glaring difference in skill. You just have to respect it.’
Pan Jichuan sighed in admiration internally, then grew excited all over again as he remembered Yan Feifan agreeing to let him come for guidance.
’Our relationship has taken a huge step forward!’
HOOT HOOT... HOOT HOOT...
His heart pounding with excitement, Pan Jichuan ignored the strange looks from others in the hallway and, still like a gleeful gorilla, entered the elevator...
Meanwhile, back in his office, Yan Feifan was speaking with the three men from the Liao Family—a father and his two sons—who had come to see him.
"Mr. Yan..."
Liao Guili handed a stack of documents to Yan Feifan, his voice tinged with worry. "The hospital said the video recording of Zili’s leg surgery was deleted and overwritten a long time ago because the retention period had expired."
"I was only able to gather some text-based documents and a few photos related to the surgery."
"Mr. Yan, do you think this will be enough?"
Yan Feifan quickly flipped through the new materials the man had collected and said, "Mr. Liao, I can never have too much information. The more complete, the better."
"The surgery is expected to be scheduled for about two weeks from now."
"During this time, please do your best to gather what you can."
Liao Guili acknowledged with a sound of agreement.
Liao Ziqiang eyed Yan Feifan’s left leg and said with a hint of schadenfreude, "Mr. Yan, I saw you were limping just now, too."
"That’s just temporary, right? It’s not one of those classic cases of ’a doctor can’t heal himself,’ is it?"
Before Yan Feifan could even speak, his father, Liao Guili, roared angrily, "Liao Ziqiang, get the hell out of here!"
Liao Ziqiang snorted defiantly and walked out.
Liao Guili clasped his hands together and said, "Mr. Yan, I am so sorry."
"That scoundrel... I was too busy with my business in his early years and neglected his discipline. Now he’s become so unruly."
"He’s offended you, truly offended you!"
Yan Feifan waved his hand lightly, indicating that it was fine.
Liao Guili sighed and said, "Mr. Yan, I read the reports online about the dangerous situation you encountered in the United States, and I saw some of the surveillance videos."
"It was truly a close call. Even as an outsider watching, my heart was in my throat, and my hair stood on end!"
Yan Feifan chuckled lightly. "For me, it was just a minor injury. A scare, but no real danger."
Liao Guili said flatteringly, "Mr. Yan, you’ve always saved lives and healed the wounded. Naturally, heaven protects you. You’re blessed with great fortune."
He sighed again and said, "It’s just such a shame about Dr. Hakeman. He was one of the top ten neurosurgeons in the entire United States."
Yan Feifan nodded. "It is a shame indeed."
Liao Guili then asked tentatively, "Mr. Yan, will you be attending Dr. Hakeman’s funeral?"
Yan Feifan shook his head. "The incident has left me with some lingering fear. I’ve developed a bit of a psychological block, so I probably won’t be going abroad for a long time."
Liao Guili’s question made Yan Feifan think of something.
He added, "I will express my condolences to Dr. Hakeman’s family through other means."
Just then, Qin Feng knocked and entered. Liao Guili took his younger son and departed.
This time, the brain tumor patient from the military that Qin Feng had brought would have their surgery postponed until Friday, to serve as a demonstration surgery for Yan Feifan’s brain tumor puncture and injection technique.
The two of them discussed the patient’s surgical plan, and then the conversation shifted back to Dr. Hakeman.
"Mr. Yan, I had some fairly deep conversations with Dr. Hakeman at two international medical conferences."
Qin Feng said regretfully, "Compared to others, he wasn’t so high and mighty, nor did he have that discrimination that’s hidden deep down. Our conversations were always quite candid."
"Sigh, what a shame!"
Yan Feifan agreed. "He was a rather pure doctor."
Qin Feng nodded and said, "Dr. Hakeman once told me that his grandfather, father, and several of his uncles were all doctors. You could say he came from a family of doctors."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "Oh," and remarked thoughtfully, "These days, families of doctors are becoming more and more common in our country as well."
"The Affiliated Hospital has many second- and third-generation doctors."
Qin Feng sighed softly and said, "To be honest, if I had a better choice, I wouldn’t want my child to become a doctor."
"Being a doctor in our country is too exhausting, and the risks aren’t small either."
He added helplessly, "The problem is, with social stratification becoming more rigid, these ’better choices’ in society are becoming fewer and fewer. When you compare all the options, being a doctor actually becomes the best of the next-best choices."
Yan Feifan said in a deadpan tone, "At your level and status, Mr. Qin, there really aren’t many better choices than being a doctor."
Qin Feng chuckled. "By your logic, Mr. Yan, your future children will have no choice but to become doctors."
Yan Feifan just waved his hand and said, "In the future, when I have a child, I won’t try to control him."
"As long as he’s happy every day, it doesn’t matter even if he accomplishes nothing in life."
Yan Feifan meant what he said. That kind of life was actually the one he himself wanted to live.
But he had shouldered heavy burdens since he was a child, and he wasn’t free to live as he pleased.
Now, it had become second nature. That, combined with the constraints and shaping from his internal and external environments, had simply become his way of life.
Qin Feng chuckled. "Once you actually have a child, you won’t think that way anymore. The desire for one’s son to become a dragon and one’s daughter a phoenix is bone-deep and ingrained in our culture..."
Suddenly, someone else pushed the door open and walked in without even knocking.
This discourteous fellow was none other than Miao Quan, the head of the psychiatry department.
He surveyed the room’s furnishings and nodded. "The comfort level is acceptable. It can just barely serve as a counseling room."
"Feifan, on this trip to the United States, you escaped death by a hair’s breadth and witnessed someone die violently right beside you. It’s inevitable that you’ll feel fear, self-blame, helplessness, anxiety, pessimism, and so on."
"I’ve specifically cleared my schedule to come and give you a psychological counseling session..."
