Chapter 215: Didn’t Want Poor Contracted Beasts

Chapter 215: Didn’t Want Poor Contracted Beasts

In the heart of the Capital City, beneath the blanket of falling snow, the night market awakened. It was a bustling symphony of sights and sounds. Lanterns casted a warm glow, illuminating the flurry of activities on the streets. Fragrant steam rose from stalls, mingling with the crisp winter air, as vendors plied their wares with lively banter.

Amidst the delicate snowflakes dancing in the moonlight, the market became a tapestry of colors, from vibrant silks to gleaming jewels, each item holding beauty of its own.

While the night market of Dongzhi City was also lively, it came no where near the glamor of the Imperial City’s night market. The latter was superior in every way possible.

"Can you sense your contracted beast?" Zhang Xuan asked as he and Xiang Ling checked out the items on a book stall. The latter had taken interest in the various romance best-sellers and was now excitedly looking through them to decide whether to purchase them or not.

Xiang Ling nodded her head in affirmative in response to the question while she looked through the early Chapters and art in the books. "She’s a couple of stalls away. Chatting excitedly with a tiger spirit beast."

"Wasn’t she with a merman a while ago?" Zhang Xuan asked in surprise when he got to know that the White Spirit Lion had already moved on to the fourth man in less than five minutes.

"En!" Xiang Ling once again nodded her head. "But then she found out that merman was poor and she moved on. She needs to find a rich husband."

"Needs?" Zhang Xuan emphasized on her chosen word.

Xiang Ling closed the book she was reading and picked up another one while explaining. "Since she’s my contracted beast, her husband will either be under my wing or will become another one of my contracted beasts, and I don’t want poor contracted beasts."

Zhang Xuan chuckled in response to her explanation and just shook his head before adding, "I should have expected this from you. Did you become so obsessed with money after coming here or you always liked money?"

"I’m pretty rich back in my place without me needing to do much. It’s this mortal world that has made me focus only on earning money and getting powerful. Don’t blame me for acting like a mortal." Xiang Ling whispered back as she didn’t need the stall owner to get angry at her chosen words about mortals.

"Don’t be so defensive. There’s nothing wrong with earning money. After all, it brings you all the comforts and joy you need in your life." Zhang Xuan said as he paid for the five books she finally chose to buy.

The two of them started moving with Xin Cheng right behind them. They didn’t need to walk for even ten steps as Xiang Ling stopped at the very next stall. It was a stall selling Tanghulu.

Xiang Ling bought four and offered each men one. While Zhang Xuan accepted it happily, Xin Cheng didn’t even spare it a look and instead asked, "Where is Wei Guang?"

She might have answered if she wasn’t left too stunned to speak after hearing the almost panic tone in his words. She watched as his eyes frantically searched their surroundings as he tried to look for Wei Guang.

"He’s right there. Buying some paper and ink." Zhang Xuan said while pointing out in the direction of a shop that was located not too far from where they were standing.

Xiang Ling watched Xin Cheng’s shoulders visibly relaxing and then he finally turned to face her. The moment their gazes collided, he noticed that something was wrong with the way she was studying him, and that was exactly what she was doing - studying him and the possible reason behind his panic.

She might not have thought too much about the way he reacted if he and Wei Guang were close friends. However, that was not the case. Still, he was visibly anxious at the Night Immortal’s disappearance. The more she pondered on the situation, the more she recalled such similar incidents that happened in the past.

She never thought much about it back then but as she recalled it now, she realized how Xin Cheng and Dao Ming always made sure to be around her other husbands. Unless it was a short period, the two of them never accompanied her out of the mansion on a long journey. Instead of being with her, they always preferred staying with...

Even this time, while Xin Cheng came with her, Dao Ming stayed behind, and as Xiang Ling thought about all the possible reasons behind this weird behavior of theirs, she started realizing why the two of them decided to split up this time.

Her heart almost sank at the possibility of the thought that suddenly formed in her brain and she wanted to shake it off and forget about it so badly. Getting involved with those from the lower realms was already an unforgettable crime. But if she eneded up in the middle of a conspiracy created by these two powerful rulers of the lower realms, she would face a punishment even worse than death or banishment.

As if the man read her thoughts, he moved closer to her and whispered next to her ear, "Don’t overthink. I was just worried about his safety."

And he was indeed telling the truth, that much Xiang Ling could tell. But the question was - why he felt the need to worry about someone he barely talked to on a daily basis?

Whatever was going on, Xiang Ling needed to find out about it before it was too late for her.
