A long groan of discomfort escaped Xiang Ling’s lips as she knocked her fists lightly against the sore muscles of her back. Using a spell to change into a comfortable nightdress, she poured herself a cup of warm water and drank it before making her way to the bed.
She merely made it under the blankets when the door of her room opened after a few knocks and Zhang Xuan stepped inside.
The man closed the door behind him and made his way to where Xiang Ling was now sitting on the bed. Once he was there, he placed the bowl of soup he brought on the bedside table and then settled down on the edge of the bed while facing her.
"Why are you here? Where’s Ah Guang?" Xiang Ling asked curiously when she saw him bringing the soup for her instead of Wei Guang.
"He’s in his room. I forbade him from visiting you tonight." Zhang Xuan answered as he picked up the bowl of soup and started blowing on it to cool it down a little bit.
"Why?" Xiang Ling asked only for the man to feed her a spoon full of warm soup. She would have definitely glared at him if not for how good the soup tasted. She took the bowl from him and started drinking the soup on her own.
Zhang Xuan watched her enjoying the soup with a satisfactory smile on his lips. It took him over an hour just to prepare this soup for her. Recalling the question she asked, he responded, "Because you two have become inseparable since that night five days ago. He has been spending almost every other night with you. Don’t you think you have been favoring him way too much these days?"
The accusation was loud and clear, and Xiang Ling couldn’t even say anything in her defense as she was indeed guilty. She had indeed been spending a lot of her time in the Capital City with Wei Guang. The two of them had been occasionally going out to try new foods, played games, talked about various things, and then made love during nights.
"When did I ignore you? Didn’t I went with you to watch a puppet show yesterday? I also asked the kitchen to prepare your favorite dishes today. Don’t you think you are accusing me wrongly?" Xiang Ling finally spoke in her defense and noticed the unsatisfied look on Zhang Xuan’s face.
When the man didn’t speak, she inched her face closer to get a better look at his face and asked while tilting her head to the side. "Or... are you jealous? Is it because you haven’t got to spend a night with me yet?"
She expected the man to deny, but the man quickly nodded his head in agreement as if she finally recognized the core of all problems. Turning his full attention toward her, he took hold of her hands and spoke, "Can you even believe this? We have been married for months but we haven’t even kissed once let alone consumating our marriage."
It was indeed true. The two of them hadn’t been able to even exchange a kiss due to one reason or another, and despite being married for months, they hadn’t spent a night together yet.
A smile curved the corners of Xiang Ling’s lips as she finally found out why her husband was being grumpy and jealous all of a sudden. Seeing her smiling, Zhang Xuan asked, "Why are you smiling?"
Xiang Ling shook her head before she responded, "It’s just that I never expected to see you being this sulky. This is the first time I have seen another side of yours except for you being crafty and dominating on a daily basis."
"It’s because I’m being neglected by my wife." Zhang Xuan provided and caused Xiang Ling to chuckle. As the two of them remained silent and the atmosphere became slightly tensed, Xiang Ling found herself wondering.
"Why did you marry me here?" She suddenly asked and before Zhang Xuan could have responded, she added, "Don’t give that previous nonsense of an answer of yours. I know it’s not only because you want to live a normal mundane life with me. You could have married me after I returned to the Celestial Realm. Till then, we could have spent a lot of time together in my space... doing mundane things. Then why?"
Zhang Xuan didn’t answer immediately and studied her for a moment or two. He finally let out a small sigh and responded, "You know that the rules of upper realms forbids us from interfering with the lives of the mortals. Considering you are a mortal now, I was bound by those rules. So, I decided to marry you. As your husband, those rules can no longer forbid me from helping you out when required."
Xiang Ling didn’t expect to receive such an answer. She knew that he didn’t have any bad intentions toward her, but she might have never guessed that he cared about her this much.
"Even then... you might still face some sort of punishment for helping me." She reminded him only for the man to smile warmly at her in response while he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Don’t worry. There’s nothing that I can’t handle."
Xiang Ling wondered how much was actual truth in his words and how much he was just boasting to make her not worry about him. Still, she nodded her head in understanding. One thing that she knew about him for sure was that his identity in the upper realms was no less than that of Wei Guang or Li Xian’s. With that high of a position in the upper realms, he might indeed be able to handle such situation without facing too much trouble.
She finished the soup and put the empty bowl on the bedside table before turning her attention toward the man. "Thank you for the soup. It was really good."
Her gaze dropped to his lips for a moment before they returned to his eyes and she added, "Good night."
