Xiang Ling didn’t get the chance to finish speaking as the rest of her words were swallowed by the man who left her stunned with a kiss. It ended just as quickly as it started, but the feel of his lips against hers was still there even after he pulled away.
"What are you doing?" She found herself asking, and this time, she did nothing to pretend to be strong. She was afraid of thinking too much of the kiss and she let him saw it clearly.
Dao Ming cupped her face between his palms as he answered, "I’m done running away, Little Star. I’m done pretending that I’m fine with staying away from you when I can’t even stop thinking about you. I’m done being a good friend. I’m done hurting you."
His voice was filled with just as much emotions as she felt inside her at that moment. After so long, he was finally ending the fight they both had been fighting for so long.
"And what if Xin Cheng never forgive you for choosing me over him?" She asked while staring into his deep eyes that kept reminding her of his wolf form.
Dao Ming chuckled softly before he shook his head and answered, "He will never do that. We both know that he loves you more than any person he has ever loved in his life. It’s just... he is..."
"Scared."
Xiang Ling provided the word Dao Ming was looking for, and they both knew just how right the word was to describe Xin Cheng’s dilemma.
"Right." Dao Ming nodded his head in agreement. "He’s indeed scared. Scared of failing his people by putting them in danger. He’s scared of failing you. Being with you means disobeying the long existing rules that forbids an Immortal and a demon from being together. We both know how things will end for us if we ended up together."
Xiang Ling knew everything and understood everything. She even respected Xin Cheng even more because he chose his realm and people as their king over his love. She might want him in her life, but she would have never liked him if he betrayed his own people as their king for a woman.
"Then are you not afraid as well? Even though you aren’t a demon, your Realm’s alliance lies with the Demon Realm. It would have been a different case for some other spirit beast, but as the King of the Spirit Beast Realm, you will fall under the same rules that forbid an Immortal from being with a demon. Why are you still changing your mind?" She put forward the question that she wanted him to answer the most.
Dao Ming looked at her closely for a moment before he spoke, "Let me ask then, and you must answer honestly. Will you reject me because of these rules? Will you choose your safety and well-being over your love for me? Are you scared of going against the high rules?"
Xiang Ling had always known the answer. Not like she ever planned to fall in love with those from the lower Realms but it was already too late for her to change anything. And despite her being aware of the harsh punishment that would await her if she ever ended up with Xin Cheng or Dao Ming, she didn’t want to stay away from these two men.
Slowly, but with determination, she shook her head in negative to answer his question. "Instead of being afraid and giving up on my love, I will try to fight for it with my beloved. And even if I can’t change the outcome in the end, I will not feel sad for choosing him."
A huge smile made its way to Dao Ming’s lips as he gave her a sweet and tender kiss on her forehead. "Exactly. If even you are ready to face everything just for being with me, how can I even think about running away? I don’t want to make you think that I’m a coward. I want to try to be a good king, a good and loyal friend... as well as a perfect and loyal husband to you."
"You are not my husband, yet." Xiang Ling was quick to clarify and it made Dao Ming chuckled as he nodded his head in understanding. "Right. Not yet. But I will be in the future. I will officially Marry you as soon as you will return to the Celestial Realm to take over your position as the Supreme Immortal Xing."
The confession left Xiang Ling shocked for a moment. She stared at the man closely for a moment or two before she found herself asking, "Are you proposing for a marriage right now?"
Dao Ming’s smile only became bigger as he replied, "You can think of it that way. What I’m trying to say for sure is that I’m not going to run away from you any more. I want to be in your life, Little Star, as your lover, or husband, whatever you want. But I want to be there for you."
He took hold of her hands and brought them to his mouth before placing sweet kisses on her knuckles. "And one more thing. Let me officially and properly apologize for being so rude to you. I just lost my mind when I found you unconscious and under the heavy influence of demonic energy. My heart almost stopped beating at that moment. It made me realize just how afraid I am about losing you. If I still continued to run away from you, I will indeed prove myself to be an idiot. Sorry for hurting you."
Whenever Xiang Ling thought about confronting this man about their feelings for each other, she expected them to fight and end up getting even farther from each other. What she didn’t expect was for him to melt her heart with his every word and win her all over again.
"You better not change your mind after this." She threatened and received another kiss on her forehead from the man.
