Chapter 502 - 511: She’s Not a Good Person
Chapter 502: Chapter 511: She’s Not a Good Person
"Don’t be angry. In this apocalypse, things like this are just par for the course."
Stella Sterling saw the ugly look on Felix Lawrence’s face and offered a word of comfort.
After all, even blood brothers turn on each other for personal gain, let alone Felix Lawrence and that man, who had no real connection to begin with.
In this apocalypse, the depths of human depravity were on full display. The evil in everyone’s hearts was magnified, and few could hold on to their moral bottom line.
After seeing it enough, you realize it’s all just normal. You get used to it.
Felix Lawrence gave a bitter laugh. He took a deep breath, and the anger in his heart slowly subsided.
’Miss Sterling is right. People are treacherous in this apocalypse. You can’t even necessarily trust those who seem to be your closest friends.’
’I’ve seen plenty of it over the years. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have fallen for River Larkin’s tricks before.’
’Didn’t that happen precisely because I treated River Larkin as one of my own?’
So, over the years, he had come to accept this reality and had been changing himself.
However, he still firmly believed that there were trustworthy people in this world.
’Take Miss Sterling, for example. I hadn’t had much to do with her before, yet she helped me so much.’
’Just because she noticed a single look that was off, Miss Sterling followed them in secret and helped them at the critical moment.’
’If it had been anyone else, I would’ve been lucky to get a simple warning. Who would go to so much trouble?’
’So, isn’t Miss Sterling exactly the kind of person worth befriending?’
’She might seem cold on the surface, but the more you get to know her, the more you discover the kindness hidden deep in her heart. Mutt is unreliable, but Miss Sterling is dependable.’
In truth, although he had known Miss Sterling before, he hadn’t interacted with her much.
In contrast, he had been in much closer contact with Mutt over the past year or so.
The two of them had been through a lot together, even facing life and death side-by-side. It was because of this bond that he had trusted Mutt so completely.
He had worked with him many times over the last year.
After all that, he thought the man was worth befriending.
He never expected that Mutt would be less trustworthy than Miss Sterling, someone he barely knew.
’I can’t believe it. He was scheming like this behind my back.’
’For all I know, in the year I’ve known him, he might have pulled stunts like this countless times without me realizing it.’
’It’s just that I was lucky enough to escape those times, so I never discovered his plots against me.’
’If it weren’t for Miss Sterling this time, I still wouldn’t know what kind of person Mutt really is.’
After all, if Miss Sterling hadn’t shown up today, he would have either fallen into the hands of Ronan Rhodes and his men—dying without ever knowing what Mutt had done—
or he would have taken care of those people himself but remained completely oblivious to Mutt’s intentions, perhaps even feeling grateful to him.
’Who would have thought that a man who seemed so generous on the surface was actually plotting against me the whole time?’
’I would have remembered his generosity, owed him a favor, and he would have used me to get rid of Ronan Rhodes’s crew.’
’Mutt would have only lost one or two of his men.’
’Meanwhile, he would have remained perfectly hidden in the shadows.’
’If Miss Sterling hadn’t happened to discover it this time, I would have been kept in the dark forever.’
And since Mutt was able to plot against him this time without being discovered, it was very likely that similar incidents had happened before.
He looked at Stella Sterling and shook his head. "Don’t worry, Miss Sterling, I’m fine. You’re right. Things like this are all too common in the apocalypse."
"I’m disappointed in him, but more than that, I’m glad. At least now I see him for who he is and won’t be deceived again. Besides, having a genuine friend like you, Miss Sterling, is worth losing countless fake friends like Mutt."
"It was nothing."
Stella Sterling shook her head. It hadn’t been a difficult task for her. She happened to know Felix Lawrence, so she had helped him out.
But Felix Lawrence shook his head solemnly. "Maybe it was a small effort for you, Miss Sterling, but for us, it was a life-saving grace. I, Felix Lawrence, will never forget it!"
Seeing his sincere expression, Stella Sterling raised an eyebrow, her tone languid. "Don’t mistake me for some saint. I’m no great humanitarian!"
’I only helped Felix Lawrence because I knew him from before, and because I don’t lack food right now. That’s why I could help him without any ulterior motives.’
’But if the situation were different—if I were starving, for instance—I might have had some nasty ideas about his supplies myself.’
She had never been a saint. The only reason she could act this way now was that she wasn’t short on food. On that basis, she didn’t mind playing the good guy once in a while, helping people she knew and found agreeable.
But all of this was predicated on the absence of any conflict of interest between her and them.
If Felix Lawrence thought too highly of her, he was gravely mistaken.
Hearing this, Felix Lawrence was taken aback, a flicker of confusion in his eyes. He didn’t understand why Miss Sterling would say such a thing.
He said, "I never thought of you as some great humanitarian, Miss Sterling. After all, back in the residential complex, I heard plenty of rumors about you!"
He had always known Miss Sterling was no saint. But he didn’t care what kind of person she was. She had genuinely helped him, and to him, that made her a great benefactor who had saved his life.
That was enough! ’Why worry about the rest?’
Stella Sterling was also stunned for a moment before she scoffed. "If you know about my bad reputation, why are you still brave enough to associate with me? Aren’t you afraid I’ll trick you out of everything you own and swallow you whole, leaving not even the bones behind?"
Felix Lawrence looked sincerely into Stella Sterling’s eyes and shook his head firmly. "I’m not afraid!"
Stella Sterling looked at him with some surprise. ’Is he really that certain?’
Then, Felix Lawrence continued, "Because I feel that, no matter what, you have a baseline of kindness deep down in your heart, Miss Sterling!"
Hearing this, Stella Sterling’s heart stirred slightly. She then let out a low laugh, her thoughts unreadable.
At that moment, Felix Lawrence added, "Besides, you’ve done me a great service, Miss Sterling. Even if you really did that to me one day, I would just be repaying the debt I owe you from today!"
Hearing this, Stella Sterling burst out laughing. She clapped him on the shoulder. "Take care of yourself. I’m off!"
