Chapter 375: Chapter 137: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period-Setting Novel (24)
It was the first time Chi Yun’er had ever seen this side of a man, and she couldn’t help but lean her head against his chest and laugh.
Jiang Yihua sighed. "Why do I feel like I’m raising a daughter?"
’My wife is so delicate,’ he thought. ’I’d feel guilty even making a move on her...’
There were seven trucks in total heading to Mongolia. Their beds were huge and completely filled with grain, then covered with waterproof tarps and tied down with several thick hemp ropes.
The cabs could accommodate four people, but each truck only had two drivers. The remaining two spots were reserved for the educated youth from nearby who had heard the news and wanted to hitch a ride home to visit their families.
The truck cab was quite high, so Jiang Yihua had to lift Chi Yun’er up into it.
Chi Yun’er grabbed the handle to steady herself, got into the cab, and closed the door with a smile. She turned her head and saw a female comrade with an unnatural smile. A pile of luggage was placed between them.
Since they were both women, the space didn’t feel too tight.
She gave a light smile and nodded at the other woman.
Jiang Yihua walked around the front of the truck and sat in the driver’s seat. He first picked up a bag and passed it to the back. "The master chef in the kitchen woke up early to steam these buns specially for you. Shepherd’s purse, duck blood, vermicelli, tofu, and pork buns. They’re the chef’s specialty, and they’re still warm."
"There’s also sweet mung bean soup that was kept cool in the well all night, and some snacks. Help yourself. If you get sleepy, take a nap. I’ll wake you when we stop to rest in a town..."
As he listened to Jiang Yihua’s meticulous instructions, the man in the passenger seat was so shocked his jaw nearly dropped. And that was to say nothing of the woman in the back seat, who had probably spent a fortune in money and ration tickets just to ride in the same truck as him.
"Boss, you’re incredible. No wonder the rest of us brothers either can’t find a wife, or our wives are leagues behind our sister-in-law. So this is how you dote on someone in private?"
"I knew it! I was wondering why you offered up that bottle of good liquor last night. It was all just so sister-in-law could have hot, steaming buns. We all just got to benefit from it..."
The young man gave him a thumbs-up in admiration.
The woman in the back seat bit her lip and asked softly, "Mr. Jiang, do you have any more buns? I heard we might stop at a restaurant to eat along the way. I... I was in a hurry this morning and didn’t prepare enough. But I can pay with money and ration tickets."
Chi Yun’er tilted her head. She could smell the scent of green tea.
’Hah. Trying to hit on my man right in front of me?’
Chi Yun’er tilted her head and let out a light laugh. "Excuse me, miss. Did you not see me, a whole living person, sitting right here?"
"Did you really have to talk to the driver—who is my boyfriend, Mr. Jiang—while he needs to concentrate on driving in the dark?"
"There’s another breathing person right here. We’re all from the same farm. Why would my man have buns and he doesn’t?"
The young man who was called out quickly waved his hands and shrugged regretfully. "That’s why the boss is the boss—he always has a trick up his sleeve. If I’d known, I would’ve eaten two fewer buns. Maybe then I’d have a wife by now too..."
The verbal jabs from the two of them left the female comrade’s face flush with embarrassment.
However, a wronged expression soon appeared on her face. She said in a small voice, "Then... then, miss, could I trade you for a bun?"
"I’ll trade you some White Rabbit Creamy Candy for it..."
Tsk tsk. Chi Yun’er pulled a bag of White Rabbit Creamy Candy from her own bag and said with a smile, "You mean this kind of candy, miss? The kind Brother Hua bought for me?"
After speaking, she tore open the bag, grabbed a handful, and stuffed it into the young man’s hands in the passenger seat. Then she unwrapped one for herself, stood up, and popped it into the driver’s mouth.
Only then did Chi Yun’er sit back down. She opened the bag Jiang Yihua had brought over earlier, took out a bun, and took a big bite. "CHOMP. Mmm, this is really delicious!"
The bun was still warm, and its fragrant aroma wafted through the cab. The enticing smell was enough to make the stomach of the woman beside her RUMBLE in shame.
But the woman merely blushed like a pitiful kitten. She hugged her bag, huddled in the back seat, and adjusted her position just so she could meet Jiang Yihua’s eyes in the rearview mirror.
However, once Jiang Yihua drove the truck off the farm and onto the road, he calmly adjusted the rearview mirror. Instantly, it was filled with the frame of his little girlfriend, who was eating with utter delight.
The young man, having had his fill of their public displays of affection, silently unwrapped a candy and popped it in his mouth, pretending that he, too, was overcome with sweetness.
Meanwhile, the other woman lowered her eyes, filled with resentment and helplessness.
After she finished her bun, Jiang Yihua handed her a water bottle with one hand. "I know you’re not an early riser, so I made you a cup of malted milk. Drink it and then take a nap?"
Chi Yun’er obediently hummed in agreement. The window was half-open, and the sky was turning a pearly gray. A purplish-red hue spread across half the horizon. The wind was cool and gentle, seeming to blow away all anxiety and misery, leaving only beauty and peace.
After finishing the malted milk, she took a few sips of warm water to rinse her mouth before comfortably leaning against the luggage between the seats to sleep.
Gradually, the sun rose higher, and its scorching rays shone on the passenger side. The young man didn’t mind; as long as he wasn’t working in the fields, he was happy to lie back and let the sun beat down on him.
But the other woman was also on the side being "kissed" passionately by the sun. Even though she tried to block it with her clothes, the heat still poured in relentlessly.
In contrast, Chi Yun’er, nestled on her side, slept soundly with the light breeze from the slow and steady-moving truck...
When Chi Yun’er woke up, the truck had already entered a small town and was stopped at a gas station to refuel. The drivers had all gotten out to stretch, and the other passengers had also disembarked to walk around, ask the station employees for some hot water, or use the latrine.
She groggily sat up and rubbed her eyes. Lately, she couldn’t quite believe that she was actually leaving Bian Family Village and returning to the Capital City. She hadn’t slept well for the past two nights, and on top of that, she got a little carsick. She hadn’t expected to sleep for so long.
Jiang Yihua, who had been talking to someone with his arms crossed, noticed the movement in the cab window. He hurried over and teased, "The little lazy cat is finally awake. You were sleeping so soundly. If I had just left you on the side of the road, would you have been able to find your way back?"
As he spoke, he handed her a freshly bought orange-flavored soda.
The outside of the soda bottle was still covered in condensation. A chill wafted from it on the breeze, chasing away most of Chi Yun’er’s lingering sleepiness.
She took it languidly. "Brother Hua, go on and try. If you lose me, let’s see where you’ll find another wife as beautiful, smart, and well-behaved as me!"
Her confidently sassy look was just too adorable.
Jiang Yihua glanced at her and let out a low chuckle. "Getting bold, are we? I hope you’re just as defiant with me in bed."
Chi Yun’er froze. The soda that had just gone down her throat seemed to roil and come back up.
She let out an orange-flavored burp. So unladylike...
’This guy’s gone crazy with the innuendos, and now he wants to take me for a ride!’
Jiang Yihua suppressed his smile, afraid the young lady would get genuinely angry from embarrassment and ignore him. He took the soda, which she had drunk about a third of, from her hand and gulped the rest down in one go. "Just a few sips to cool off is enough. Girls shouldn’t drink too many cold things."
"We’re going to eat in a bit. Is there anything you want?"
Chi Yun’er shot him a glare. ’I’ve eaten, had a drink, and taken a nap without even moving my legs. How could I possibly be hungry?’
"Come on, get out and stretch your legs. Keep me company while I have some cold noodles."
Chi Yun’er nodded, took his hand, and jumped down. Her legs, having been still for so long, had no strength the moment they touched the ground, and she collapsed right into his arms.
The man said helplessly, "Yun’er, I’m your man. I’m right here, and no one can snatch me away. You... you don’t have to prove it every single moment."
"It’s not good if other people see..."
Chi Yun’er glared at his smiling face, huffing in anger. Where was the wilted, listless girl from before?
The two of them were not short on money. One was capable and resourceful, while the other was the pampered darling of her family. Every time they stopped, they would slip away from the group to eat something nice and buy some local specialties.
Although they had to drive for more than ten hours each day, Jiang Yihua planned the time and route so well that he could always squeeze out a couple of hours to browse the local supply and marketing co-op and have a leisurely meal at the state-run restaurant next door.
He had single-handedly turned a tense transport mission into something resembling a road trip!
