Chapter 374: Chapter 137: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (24)

"Jiang Zishi’s plan was a complete bust. He lost the bait and the fish!"

Chi Yun’er nodded, gloating. "Exactly. He’s always scheming against others, and he’s so greedy. He wants to have his cake and eat it too. Where on earth does he think he’ll find a deal that good?"

Jiang Zishi was the type to do evil deeds but insist on maintaining a respectable facade to get by.

Tsk, tsk. From the moment he set his sights on the village tyrant’s connections and the university spot for a worker-peasant-soldier, he was destined to be tied to Bian Yumin.

How could the top tyrant in the village let someone cozy up to them, take what they want, and then expect to walk away scot-free?

Jiang Yihua ruffled her hair. "The official policies are becoming clearer now. Sent-down youth can return to the cities if their families find a work unit that will accept them. I believe that in the future, they’ll even be able to use their records to go home and get their residency registered."

"Even though Jiang Zishi is my own brother, when I go home this time, I’m going to tell my parents everything he’s done, from the time we were children until now."

"If they side with what’s right and refuse to get involved with Jiang Zishi, then I’m willing to take on the responsibility of supporting them all by myself. But if they can’t let go of their blood ties, then I’ll only fulfill the most basic family obligations."

"I’ll help out if they’re in real trouble, visit during the holidays, and provide a minimal living stipend when they’re old."

Chi Yun’er looked at him.

Jiang Yihua pulled her into his arms. "I have to force their hand. They need to choose: Do they want an outstanding son like me and a beautiful, sensible daughter-in-law they’ve watched grow up, or do they want a son who spends his days scheming and causing trouble, along with a malicious daughter-in-law from the countryside?"

"If I don’t do this, they’ll eventually be dragged down with Jiang Zishi."

Chi Yun’er nodded repeatedly. "I think so too. It just feels a bit cruel to them."

’What parent is willing to give up on their own child?’

Jiang Yihua smiled and pinched her cheek. "Jiang Zishi is an adult now. He needs to take responsibility for his own life. How long can our parents keep cleaning up his messes?"

"From now on, if he does anything wrong, he won’t need anyone else to expose him. I’ll do it myself! Last night was just the beginning."

Although Chi Yun’er had delivered the finishing blow herself, Jiang Yihua’s help was still needed to handle the aftermath and ensure everything was resolved smoothly.

Director Zhang had been arrested and sentenced to death. Even if the brick factory was merely shut down and facing a strict investigation, would the factory workers, Director Zhang’s family, and the powerful figures behind the factory really let the Bian family and Jiang Zishi off so easily?

The effects weren’t obvious after just one morning, but she could predict that an absolute hell awaited the Bian family and Jiang Zishi.

Chi Yun’er hugged his arm and giggled. "I almost feel a little sorry for him now. Having a brother like you who’d uphold justice even against his own family... he must be thrilled!"

Since they were leaving early the next morning, Chi Yun’er had already finished packing. She went to the kitchen to borrow the stove and made some food.

The sky was still pitch-black when Jiang Yihua knocked on Chi Yun’er’s door. "Yun’er, wake up. It’s time to go. We’ll load your things into the car, and you can catch up on sleep on the way."

Chi Yun’er’s eyes flew open. Staring into the dark room and hearing the man’s deep voice from outside the door, she quickly answered.

When she opened the door, a basin of water was pressed into her hands. "Go ahead and wash up. Just point out what needs to be carried."

Chi Yun’er froze for a second. ’So this is what people mean by ’boyfriend material,’’ she thought. ’It’s the sweetness of being completely and utterly doted on by the one you love.’

She smiled, pressing her lips together. "Just that one suitcase, two totes, and a backpack. But the backpack has a lot of food in it, so please put it somewhere easy to reach, Brother Hua. I can carry the small satchel myself."

Jiang Yihua nodded. He glanced at her, still drowsy from sleep. The light was dim, but his girlfriend was like walking moonlight, her fairness so striking it made his heart ache for her.

’No wonder they say beauties look best by lamplight. A woman in the dim, hazy light has a charm that makes your blood race.’

His Adam’s apple bobbed. Forcing himself to look away, he gathered her things and carried them out in one go.

By the time he returned, Chi Yun’er was ready. She was dressed in an olive-green outfit with a red-star cap, her hair in two loose French braids. She looked youthful and vibrant, just as she had when she first arrived in the countryside.

Jiang Yihua stared for a moment, then leaned in toward the mirror she was holding.

The base was built in a remote location, and since their work was primarily agricultural, they just made do with candles in the morning and evening. There was no need for electricity.

In the mirror, he was just a dark silhouette. When he grinned, the flash of his white teeth was enough to startle even himself.
