Alex had also noticed the little details, like how she would pick at the meat and eat her peas separately.
The food the Beastmen made was as hearty as their personalities. Even someone as meticulous as Barto wouldn’t go out of his way to mince the meat.
She had always eaten whatever was served to her. As the one being fed, she wasn’t one to be picky about the size of the meat chunks.
Gu Ning took the large soup ladle, scooped up about half a ladleful of peas, and stuffed her mouth full.
’So good.’
Seeing her look of satisfaction, Barto said, "Give me a bite."
Gu Ning spooned some into his bowl.
After that, no matter what she ate, Barto would ask for a bite.
Alex didn’t compete with him over this. He ate at a slow, steady pace, occasionally putting food into Gu Ning’s bowl. He kept in mind the nutritional chart Doctor Lanuo and the other doctors had created for her, remembering what she could eat more of and what she should eat less of.
Gu Ning silently pushed the remaining half-bowl of peas toward Alex. Alex didn’t even have a bowl; he was eating so elegantly with his chopsticks that it almost looked like they were mistreating him.
Now Barto was unhappy again.
He snorted softly, lowered his eyes, and muttered, "I get one spoonful, but he gets half a bowl."
Gu Ning didn’t feel like explaining. She reached over, took Barto’s bowl, handed it to Alex, and then gave him the peas.
Barto glared at her. "What are you doing?"
Gu Ning glared back. "Are you going to eat or not?"
Barto couldn’t sit still any longer. He slammed the bowl of peas down in front of her with a THUD, stood up, and said, "I’m full!"
Gu Ning said, "Don’t you dare leave. Sit down!"
Normally, she would have just let Barto leave and coaxed him later. ’But when he and Alex are together, I always feel this urge to escape, unable to look either of them in the eye.’
She hadn’t felt this way when Barto was still a reverted fox, nor did she feel it when she was with other people. It was only when he appeared together with Alex that her thoughts would get jumbled.
’Since we’re going to be a family,’ she thought, ’I have to find a way to ease the tension between them.’
’Alex has a good temper, but he can’t be the one who’s always backing down and compromising.’
Barto froze for a moment. "I’m not Cook," he said.
With that, he left the hospital room without a backward glance.
Gu Ning was about to call out to him when Alex whispered in her ear, "It’s getting dark."
Hearing this, Gu Ning quickly put down her spoon, wiped her mouth, and started to get out of bed. She still had work to do. "Alex, you eat. I’m full."
"There’s no rush," Alex said.
’At least the fox knew to wait until she finished eating before storming off,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been so polite.’
Alex cleared the table first, then removed Gu Ning’s IV needle.
Just then, Lanuo came in, timing his arrival to change her IV bag. He stopped short when he saw the young female on the sofa rummaging through a pile of clothes. The IV stand was gone, and there was no tube in her hand. He hurried toward her, holding the new bag of medication. "Why did you take out the needle? The drip isn’t finished yet."
Busy searching for a suitable outfit, Gu Ning glanced at Lanuo and said, "Doctor Lanuo, just a minute, just a minute."
Lanuo looked at Alex, who was sitting to the side fiddling with a vintage camera. "What are you two up to?"
Alex was busy fixing Gu Ning’s camera. He said, "Just leave the medicine. I’ll put Ningning on the drip later."
Lanuo asked, "You two aren’t planning on going out, are you?"
Gu Ning and Alex exchanged a look. Alex said, "Ningning wants to take a shower."
"Mhm," Gu Ning nodded, playing along.
"Alright." Lanuo narrowed his eyes slightly and put down the medicine. "Get back on the drip after your shower. I’m going to get some sleep. I pulled another all-nighter last night."
After dealing with Lanuo, Gu Ning changed her clothes and found the photography sphere Barto had given her in her bag.
’I’ll have to rely on this to shoot the video.’
’I had originally planned to ask Barto for help after dinner, but he got angry and ran off. Now I’ll have to film it myself.’

She was wearing thermal underwear, a turtleneck sweater, and an off-white woolen overcoat, topped off with fluffy gloves and a hat shaped like animal ears.
It was a whole new outfit, except for the light gray scarf around her neck, which Barto had knitted for her.
