Chapter 308 - 272
Chapter 308: Chapter 272
Once the car window was shut, Mingxi switched off his terminal, which had no signal, and followed the security guard. "How did you know Miss Gu Ning wasn’t here?" he asked Leighton.
Leighton pulled his gaze away from the security cordon and leaned back lazily in his seat. "With a commotion this big, why would they leave her there?"
"Why is the signal so weak?" Belial asked, holding up his terminal. "We need to ask Admiral Andrew about this..."
"You’re going to bother him over something like this? Just ask me," Leighton said, pulling out an herbal cake and taking a bite.
"Ask you? And do *you* know where Miss Gu Ning is?" Belial shot him a glare.
He had been bossed around like this the whole trip, and he was long past being annoyed.
Leighton scoffed and mocked him mercilessly. "The way you lot are, you wouldn’t be able to get a word in even if you did see her."
Belial retorted angrily, "And you think you could?"
"Belial," Mingxi cut in, then turned to Leighton. "What’s really going on?"
Leighton said, "That’s more like it. A little humility, little lions. Stick with me, and I’ll make sure you eat."
"They’ve likely found her," Leighton said, his eyes on the lead motorcycle up ahead.
Initially, he wasn’t clear on the little lions’ mission. He’d just been ordered by the Military Department to accompany them under the guise of a reassignment.
But after traveling with them for a while, he’d managed to wheedle out most of what he needed to know.
"Found her?" Mingxi asked. "How could the Military Department let that happen? Those are Admiral Andrew’s elite soldiers."
"Didn’t you notice that captain’s demeanor just now?" Leighton said. "Zone 15 is under such tight control, yet he barely checked our IDs."
"They haven’t completely found her," Leighton clarified.
Gu Ning didn’t wake up until well past noon.
After Alex had gone to sleep last night, she had spent a few hours editing footage for Idelos. At some point, Philinos had brought her some hot food. After eating the late-night meal, she felt re-energized and continued editing, not getting to sleep until two or three in the morning.
She had stayed up so late that even after a full seven or eight hours of sleep, she still felt drowsy and wanted to drift off again.
However, the firm, warm presence behind her was impossible to ignore, making it difficult to fall back asleep.
Gu Ning lowered her gaze to the thick, strong arm wrapped around her. It took her a moment to remember that there was another person—a male Beastman—sleeping in the bed with her.
She was lying on her side with her back to Alex, held tightly in his embrace. Even her legs were tangled with his.
She didn’t know when her outer clothes had been removed, leaving her in just a thin shirt and shorts. Alex held her bundled up in his arms. There was no heating in the room, but Alex was a natural furnace. His body heat pressed against her, making her break out in a light, sticky sweat.
Alex’s own clothes were thin, and as he held her so tightly, Gu Ning could clearly feel the shape of every part of his body pressed against hers.
Gu Ning’s cheeks began to burn. She wanted to pull away, but hearing the soft, shallow breaths behind her, she realized Alex must be exhausted. He’d never slept in this late before.
Afraid of waking him, she could only stretch the leg she could move out from under the covers. Gripping the bedsheet with her toes for leverage, she pushed her hips forward, trying to create a little distance between them.
However, the moment she moved, Alex seemed to stir. He pulled her deeper into his embrace, pressing them even closer together.
Gu Ning’s body went rigid, and a wave of heat washed over her.
"You’re awake?" Alex nuzzled her hair affectionately with his chin, his voice raspy as he asked, his face close to hers, "What time did you get to bed last night?"
’He’d actually woken up much earlier, but he couldn’t bear to get up, so he had just held Gu Ning and gone back to sleep.’
’He had slept so soundly. It had been a long time since he’d slept so deeply through the night.’
Gu Ning felt Alex’s grip loosen slightly, and only then did she turn to face him. "I slept a lot during the day, so I wasn’t tired."
Alex chuckled. "It’s only been a few days, but your Common Tongue has improved so much."
His praise made Gu Ning smile. ’Being around those captains,’ she thought, ’it’d be hard *not* to improve.’
When she stepped out, she was greeted by a boisterous scene in the living room.
The three captains, Barto, and the others were all there.
For a moment, she thought she was back at her old place.
Cook was sniffing at her insistently, shooting an unfriendly glare at Alex.
