Chapter 307 - 272
Chapter 307: Chapter 272
He slowly got up and brought the backpack over.
He stared at the backpack for a while, his lips pressed together tightly. Then, Wanai opened it and pulled a thin, palm-sized, sealed plastic bag from a hidden compartment.
He let out a breath, as if he’d made a difficult decision, before opening the bag and taking out a small, triangular pair of panties.
The scent on them was already very faint, but because the panties had been kept in the sealed bag, the smell had been preserved for a long time.
It was the same scent he had smelled tonight on that... female. Except the scent on her was richer and carried a strange, bloody fragrance.
He couldn’t describe it, but the scent made him instinctively certain that she was a female.
Not a Mixed Breed, and definitely not a Mimic Mixed Species.
He had seen Mimic Mixed Species of all grades and had also seen females. He knew the difference. Although this female was unlike any other he had encountered, she was definitely not a Mimic Mixed Species.
Wanai took a deep sniff of the scent on the panties, leaned back against the worn-out sofa, and covered his forehead with his hand.
After a moment, a soft, self-mocking laugh echoed in the darkness.

At three in the morning, two off-white SUVs, one behind the other, drove into the central area of Zone 15. They were stopped by a security team near the inner ring road.
"What’s going on?" Belial, inside the car, looked out the window at the police tape and asked in confusion.
The Beastman who had stopped them waved them on with a stern expression, signaling for them to take a detour.
"They’re not letting us through," said Mingxi, who was driving.
"Did something happen?"
Belial pressed his face to the window, sizing up the long line of well-equipped security teams outside. "Vine’s team should be just up ahead, right?" he asked, puzzled. "Could they have arranged these guys?"
"We’re almost there." Mingxi observed for a moment before saying, "These aren’t their men."
Just then, a security team member, seeing their car wasn’t moving, walked over and knocked on their window.
Leighton, who had been dozing in the passenger seat, opened his eyes at the sound, rubbed his face, and rolled down the window.
"Didn’t you see the cordon?" the security member asked, his tone unpleasant. "Get out of here, now. Linger any longer and we’ll write you up for obstructing police business."
Leighton was wide awake in an instant.
"Yo, buddy, looks like there was a brawl?" Leighton said, turning to Mingxi and making a small beckoning gesture with his hand.
Mingxi understood immediately, pulling out the Zone 3 special permit and placing it in his hand.
"We’re from Zone 3," Leighton said, handing over the gleaming gold permit. "Our assigned lodgings are just up ahead."
The security member took the permit and was about to examine it when his captain strode over from behind. "What’s going on?"
"Captain," the member said, handing him the gleaming gold ID.
The captain took it, glanced it over, then raised his eyes to scan the two vehicles.
"They say they’re from Zone 3, on a mission," the member whispered to the captain.
The captain glanced again at the card, which carried some weight. He didn’t know if they were really from Zone 3, but the clearance level on this special permit was not low.
"You guys aren’t from the regular police department, are you?" Leighton, knowing this Beastman was the one in charge, tried to get friendly. "What happened? This is a huge setup."
The captain handed the special permit back to him. "In Zone 15, the police and the Security Department have been merged."
Leighton nodded. "Ah, I see. Zone 15 has been developing well recently. It’s a good thing you guys in security are running a tight ship."
The captain’s brow twitched when he heard this.
"You came from Zone 19?"
Leighton raised an eyebrow. "Sharp eyes, my friend. We just finished a mission in Zone 19 and are on our way back."
"What happened up ahead?" Mingxi asked.
"It’s none of your business. Don’t ask so many questions," the captain said coolly.
"It’s the middle of the night," Leighton said with a laugh, sensing the edge in the captain’s tone. "Just let us pass. We’ve been driving all day and haven’t even had a hot meal yet."
"You can’t pass," the captain said, then told the team member beside him, "Take them to the substation to rest."
"We have our own place to stay," Belial protested, unhappy. They had finally caught up to the main group and were about to meet that female; no one was going to stop them now.
"If you have a problem, take it up with your superiors," the captain said.
Mingxi, seeing that the leader had no intention of letting them pass, frowned and said, "What exactly..."
Before he could finish, Leighton cut him off. "Alright, lead the way."
Belial: "Lead the way where..."
Leighton turned his head and shot him a look. "She’s not here."
Belial immediately shut his mouth. He exchanged a glance with Mingxi, who nodded in understanding.
