Zhou Hengguang’s face darkened, “How old am I? You’re making me lose face like this.” Under the streetlight, even the tips of his ears turned red.
“Do you not know how your own health is? Whenever you got sick as a kid, who had the bad luck of dealing with it but me and your Second brother?” Zhou Hengyang opened the car door and urged him to hurry up and get in the car, to take him home.
When they arrived at the doorstep, they saw Zou Yi and Ji Fang standing guard on either side of the door like door gods. As soon as they saw the familiar car stop at the door, they immediately came forward to open the door, their motions incredibly diligent.
“Third brother, why did you return so late?”
“Big brother, you’re here?” This was Zou Yi’s first time seeing Zhou Hengyang since returning to the country, and having not returned for several years, it had been a long time since he had seen Big Brother. Although he was abroad when Big brother left home, he was still very worried.
He had originally planned to buy gifts and visit Big Brother for the Lantern Festival tomorrow, so seeing him now was quite a surprise.
“I’m back.” Zhou Hengyang affectionately patted Zou Yi’s shoulder, “Not bad, looking better and better. I heard from Hengguang that you’ll be helping him from now on. With you here, I can worry a lot less.”
Next to them, Zhou Hengguang was warming his hands with the hot water cup that Ji Fang had handed to him. His slender and gentle fingers at that moment felt frighteningly icy cold. Hearing what Big Brother said, he called out irritably, “Hey! I’m still here! If you’re going to talk about me behind my back, at least wait until I’m actually behind you!”
Zhou Hengyang ignored him and whispered to Zou Yi in a low voice, “Since you’ve come back, his mood has improved a lot.”
“Really?” Zou Yi was overjoyed, “During the days since my return, Third Brother has been in a bad mood, so oppressive that it feels hard to breathe. I thought I had done something wrong.”
“It’s not your fault, he brought it on himself.”
Who knew Zhou Hengguang had such sharp ears; he heard every word despite their low voices and punched each of them once, “Are you two happy to see my unrequited love?”
“No,” Zou Yi quickly explained, “It’s not that we’re happy to see your unrequited love, but hearing you, Third Brother, say ‘unrequited love’ is just… unbelievable.” He finished with a confused click of the tongue.
“Third Brother, you’re just not that kind of person.”
“I’m serious,” Zhou Hengguang murmured softly. Then, carrying the cup, he walked into the house with the others following behind. They entered the living room, where the heating was on, warm as spring. He put the cup on the coffee table, took off the jacket Zhou Hengyang had placed on his shoulders earlier, and then removed his own coat.
Ji Fang took the coats with practiced ease and hung them on the rack behind the sofa.
“Ji Fang, what brings you here?”
“I… I was concerned, so I came to check on you.”
Ji Fang was worried about Zou Yi’s return. They had grown up together, and Zou Yi was a returnee from studying abroad with strong capabilities, more dedicated than him. He couldn’t compare to Zou Yi at all. Although he didn’t say it out loud, he truly admired him.
Having been with the department director for so long, he’d become used to the director’s severity and eccentricity, even though initially he couldn’t stand it. He didn’t want to be transferred or disliked, so now he was actively trying to show his worth.
Ji Fang stole a glance at Zou Yi, though he tried to be discreet, his action didn’t escape Zhou Hengguang’s sharp eyes.
“Alright, you head back first! Take my car. I’ll give you a day off for the festival tomorrow, then come pick me up the day after early in the morning, and we’ll go on a business trip together.” Zhou Hengguang swiftly reassured Ji Fang, leaving Ji Fang delighted and trotting off.
