Chapter 711: No Alibi
Chapter 711: Chapter 711: No Alibi
In Interrogation Room One.
A single incandescent light beat down directly on Harold Goodman, making his already pale and sallow face look even more ghastly white.
"Do you know why we brought you in?" Shawn Cheney asked.
Harold Goodman shook his head. "No."
Shawn asked, "What is your relationship with Dana Young?"
On the other side of the one-way mirror, Renee Jennings and Sheryl Sawyer watched the scene with cold expressions.
Harold Goodman’s eyes darted around before he answered, "Didn’t I already tell you? We’re coworkers."
"Coworkers?" Shawn spun his pen. "Then why do your coworkers say you’re a couple?"
"What?" Harold was dumbfounded. He hadn’t expected the police to have already questioned their coworkers.
"I’ll ask you again. What is your relationship with Dana Young?"
"We..." Harold stammered. "We... we dated for a while, but then we broke up. Now we’re just coworkers."
Carmen Lane said coldly, "Then do you know whose apartment the murder in your building took place in?"
Harold hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "Dana Young’s place, I guess."
Shawn asked, "Where were you at the time of the murder?"
Harold’s heart sank. He hadn’t prepared an answer for this question.
He tightened his jaw, digging his nails into his own fingers. He glanced at the officers opposite him, then lowered his eyes. "I... at that time... I had just finished showing a property to a client, and then I went home and slept."
Carmen nodded. "In other words, you have no alibi for the time of the murder."
"Officer, I was sleeping," Harold said, agitated. "You sleep alone, don’t you? How could anyone else have been there?"
Shawn picked up a tablet and played a video. "This person dragging a red suitcase... that’s you, isn’t it?"
When Harold saw himself in the video, a flash of panic crossed his eyes. He unconsciously clasped his hands together. "Ye-yeah, I guess so..."
"It’s either yes or no," Shawn snapped. "Answer the question clearly."
The corner of Harold’s eye twitched. He reached up and rubbed his nose. "Yes... it’s me."
"What was in the suitcase?" Carmen tapped the end of her pen on the table.
Harold’s gaze shifted away. "Just some stuff I was getting rid of."
"Getting rid of it in a suitcase?"
"I packed it in the suitcase to take it out and throw it away."
"Fine."
Shawn and Carmen stood up, preparing to leave.
Seeing this, Harold asked frantically, "Officers, are you done? Can I go home now?"
"Not yet." Carmen shot him a glance, the disgust in her eyes almost impossible to conceal. "You have to stay here."
Harold’s brows knitted tightly, his face a mask of anxiety and unease. "Then when can I leave?"
Carmen and Shawn ignored him, walking out of the interrogation room without a backward glance.
Harold shouted in desperation, "On what grounds are you holding me?"
Renee Jennings and Sheryl Sawyer exited through another door.
Shawn closed the door to the interrogation room and said nonchalantly, "Let’s let him stew for a night."
Carmen agreed. "He’s probably in for a rough night."
"Yes." Renee nodded lightly.
"What are your plans now?" Sheryl Sawyer asked.
Carmen answered, "We’re going to talk to Diana Young."
Renee said, "Alright, then we’ll continue to observe."
Soon, Diana Young was brought into Interrogation Room Two.
She sat there in handcuffs, her face haggard and pale. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her expression was filled with exhaustion.
She looked at Shawn and Carmen, her eyes filling with tears. She cried out, "Officers, I really didn’t mean to. He forced me to do it..."
"Diana Young," Shawn said, cutting her off. "From now on, just answer yes or no to my questions."
Diana sniffled and choked out a reply, "Okay, I understand."
Carmen asked in a level voice, "You know a man named Harold Goodman, correct?"
Diana’s eyelashes fluttered. She stared at Carmen in astonishment.
Shawn reminded her in a low voice, "Answer the question."
Diana pressed her lips together before saying, "Yes."
Carmen asked, "Is Harold Goodman your sister, Dana Young’s, boyfriend?"
Diana lowered her gaze. "Yes."
"Harold Goodman lives on the floor above you."
"Yes."
"Your sister is pregnant with Harold Goodman’s child."
"Yes."
"At the time of the murder, Harold Goodman was also at the scene."
"..." Diana opened her mouth, then clenched her fists. "No."
Carmen’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Before the murder, Harold Goodman went to your apartment to find you."
"No."
"Harold Goodman made a pass at you."
Diana glanced up at her, then quickly looked away. "No..."
Shawn frowned and warned, "Diana Young, you’d better think carefully before you answer."
Diana took a deep breath. "Officers, I’m telling the truth."
Carmen said, "Diana Young, I want you to recount the events of the crime one more time."
"Haven’t I already told you?" Diana asked, her eyes red as she began to break down. "Why do you keep forcing me to relive such a painful memory...?"
Shawn rapped his knuckles on the table, his tone severe. "Tell us what really happened!"
"What I told you is the truth," Diana said through her tears. "That deliveryman pushed his luck. I was kind enough to bring the food to him and let him eat it in my apartment, but then he got lecherous and tried to r*pe me..."
She screamed, her voice raw with anguish, "I only fought back because I was cornered! If he hadn’t died that day, if he had succeeded, then the one who’d be dead would be me!"
Shawn and Carmen remained silent, calmly waiting for her to finish crying.
Diana’s sobs gradually subsided.
Carmen let out a soft chuckle. "You’re quite the actress."
Diana’s back stiffened slightly. She stared at Carmen with moist, questioning eyes, her tone turning accusatory. "Officer, what do you mean by that? You’re a woman, too. How can you say that to me? Are you saying it’s my fault I was almost r*ped?"
Shawn spoke up. "Were you and Holden Lee really just a deliveryman and a customer?"
"What else?" Diana shot back. "What other kind of relationship could I possibly have with him?"
"We looked at Holden Lee’s bank records," Carmen said. "He donated at least twenty thousand yuan to your livestream every month."
Diana unconsciously pressed her lips together, her eyes flickering slightly. "Did he? I didn’t know about that. He never told me."
"Alright." Carmen nodded and changed the subject. "Harold Goodman is in the interrogation room right next door."
Diana’s fingers tightened, but she remained silent.
Shawn leaned forward and asked her, "At the time of the murder, Harold Goodman was at the scene, wasn’t he?"
"No." Diana shook her head frantically.
Carmen let out a laugh of exasperation. "Is half an apartment really worth throwing away the rest of your life?"
"I don’t know what you’re talking about." A hint of unease crept into Diana’s expression.
