Chapter 672: It’s Right That Your Husband Isn’t Coming Back
Chapter 672: Chapter 672: It’s Right That Your Husband Isn’t Coming Back
In the dim living room, a bald man hiding behind the sofa glanced at the time on his phone, a suspicious expression crossing his face.
"What the hell is she doing? Why isn’t she back yet!" he muttered impatiently.
Another ten minutes passed. His accomplice, Red, sidled up to him and whispered, "Bro, my stomach’s killing me. I’ve got the runs."
"Then hurry up and go." Baldy waved him off. "Go on, get."
A few seconds after Red went to the bathroom, Baldy heard a door open outside.
"Shit," he cursed. "Of all the damn times!"
CLICK—
The whole living room was instantly bright.
"I just got home. Nora and my husband are still out playing," the woman in the beige coat said with a smile as she sat on the sofa.
Baldy quietly observed the woman’s every move.
’She came back alone?’
’Perfect. It’s like even fate is on my side.’
Baldy circled around behind the sofa, inching his head out before slowly extending his hand—
He clamped a hand over the woman’s mouth and let out a sleazy laugh. "Good thing your husband isn’t coming home. I’ll keep you company tonight."
Just when he thought everything was going smoothly, he suddenly felt a cold sensation on his wrist.
Baldy looked closer, and his face instantly changed.
"Son of a bitch... handcuffs?"
A mocking smile played on Sawyer’s lips as she gripped Baldy’s arm and twisted—hard.
Baldy’s face twisted in pain. He sucked in sharp, ragged breaths as his whole body began to tremble uncontrollably.
Zachary Conway strode forward and hauled him away.
Sawyer switched off the living room lights and waited, leisurely swinging her legs.
Soon, Red emerged from the bathroom, still buttoning his pants.
He crept behind the sofa, but seeing no sign of Baldy, he called out doubtfully, "Bro? Where’d you go?"
Red circled the sofa, but his accomplice was nowhere to be found. A sense of panic set in. ’Don’t leave me here by myself!’
He crouched on the floor, growing more frightened by the second. A single thought popped into his head: climb out the window they’d used to get in.
He had just decided to move when a hand suddenly clapped down on his shoulder from behind.
Red felt a surge of relief. "Bro, you scared the shit out of me..."
He turned his head, but his words died in his throat.
Sawyer was looming over him, staring down.
Red froze for a second before it clicked. He shot up from the ground and lunged for her.
Before his hands could even reach her, a swift kick to the stomach sent him staggering backward and crashing to the floor.
"What are you doing here?" Sawyer demanded coldly.
Rubbing his stomach, Red glared at her. "You bitch! You kicked me!" he snarled.
He pushed himself to his feet and charged at Sawyer with clenched fists, only to get another swift kick to the back that sent him sprawling face-first onto the floor.
Zachary Conway stepped forward and cuffed him.
Red’s eyes went wide. With a trembling voice, he asked, "Co-cops?"
With their hands cuffed behind their backs, Baldy and Red were led dejectedly out of Building 11, the silver metal of the cuffs flashing with a cold, intimidating light.
Watching the strangers being led out of her house, the homeowner’s face grew pale. A chill crept up her spine, making her scalp tingle.
’That was terrifying...’
Zephyr beat his wings, circling high in the air. "I did a great job again, didn’t I?" he screeched.
Renee Jennings tilted her head back to look at him, a gentle smile in her eyes. "Yes, you were amazing. You did a great job again."
"Excellent!" Zephyr said, seizing the opportunity. "Remember to get me lots of yummy food when we get home."
Renee raised an eyebrow. "Absolutely."
**
Baldy and Red tried to be evasive, claiming they’d only broken in because they were starving and had no money for food.
But under serious interrogation, their psychological defenses crumbled. They finally dropped the act and confessed everything, laying out their criminal intentions in full detail.
Renee breathed a sigh of relief when she heard Baldy and Red had confessed. As she was preparing to head home, she ran into Nora and her family.
They fell to their knees in front of her, thanking her over and over.
Renee quickly helped them to their feet. "You don’t have to thank me," she said with a smile. "You should thank Zephyr."
Zephyr, who had landed on a lamppost outside the police station, heard this and said haughtily, "It’s not like I helped just to be thanked."
Renee walked outside and raised an eyebrow. "Then what did you help for?"
Zephyr: "Not telling you."
’As if she didn’t know.’
That falcon was a total glutton, and he had developed a taste for beef.
Renee’s lips curved into a smile. "Come on," she chuckled. "Let’s get you home for some meat."
By the time the two of them got home, it was already eleven-thirty.
Renee tried to negotiate with Zephyr, asking if he could have his meat tomorrow instead.
He refused. "No way. I want a midnight snack."
Renee: "..."
She shook her head with a sigh of resignation, took off her coat, and headed to the kitchen.
In the living room, Zephyr was boasting to Slider about how amazing he was for saving a family of three.
Slider was beyond annoyed. "Can you just shut up? You’re keeping me from sleeping."
Zephyr stared at Slider in his habitat with wide, round eyes. "You little bastard, how’d you know I saved someone today? I’m amazing, unlike you. You’re completely useless."
Slider: "..."
He couldn’t be bothered to deal with Zephyr, so he simply closed his eyes and feigned sleep.
As soon as Renee came out of the kitchen with the cut meat, Slider started to tattle. "Renee, can you make this falcon go somewhere else? He’s so noisy I can’t sleep."
"You were keeping Slider awake?" Renee immediately looked at Zephyr.
Zephyr blinked his big, clear, innocent eyes. "I didn’t."
Slider shrieked in outrage, "You’re lying! You damn falcon, lying right to Renee’s face! You’re such a liar!"
Zephyr: "Renee, I really wasn’t bothering him. Don’t you believe me?"
Slider scoffed in disbelief.
’He finally got it. This falcon was putting on an act.’
’Playing innocent right in front of Renee!’
Renee, unsure how to handle the situation, pursed her lips. "Zephyr," she said softly, "I’ll take you outside for your snack first. We’ll get to the bottom of this later."
The moment Zephyr heard her say she’d get to the bottom of it, he immediately started to backtrack. "It’s no big deal! Whatever Slider says, goes. If he really wants to make an issue out of it, I can apologize. I’m a bird of prey, after all. I can be magnanimous."
Renee: "..."
’She finally got it. This wasn’t just Zephyr the glutton, but Zephyr the schemer!’
Renee decided to play along. "Alright then. Zephyr, you be the bigger bird and apologize to Slider. After you apologize, we’ll get your snack."
Zephyr: "..."
He stared at her, eyes wide and apparently displeased. "Are you really going to make me apologize to that little... to Slider?"
Renee blinked, mimicking his earlier innocent expression. "Weren’t you the one who just offered to apologize to him?"
Zephyr: "..."
Seeing Zephyr at a loss for words, Slider threw his head back and cackled with glee.
