Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Tang Yueshan quickly stowed away his family bow, drew his sword, and bellowed three times in the few Yan words he knew, “Brats! Grandpa’s here! Brothers, charge with me!”
Weapons were raised as the soldiers roared and stormed into the city behind him.
He led the charge, but soon, someone caught up.
Actually, two people did.
One was on horseback, the other flying through the air with qinggong.
“Huh? Old Xiao? You’re on the battlefield yourself?”
That’s not like you.
Aren’t you always in the back, watching the show?
Marquis Xuanping had an old back injury and rarely took the field, usually directing from a war chariot.
Marquis Xuanping glanced at him. “It’s in your hands now, Old Tang.”
“Huh?” Tang Yueshan was stunned, not quite catching what he meant.
The next moment, he saw Chang Jing charge into the Jin troops, clearing a bloody path for Marquis Xuanping.
Marquis Xuanping rode straight in, leaving Tang Yueshan only a dashing, carefree figure disappearing into the fray.
Tang Yueshan looked completely baffled.
Old Xiao, I suspect you're trying to desert, but I have no proof.
Marquis Xuanping exuded a deadly aura that would strike down gods and buddhas alike. Not a single Jin soldier dared to block his path.
Even so, the journey from here to Ghost Mountain was still too far.
……
Inside the passageway of Ghost Mountain, Shangguan Yan couldn’t open the stone door blocked by Shangguan Qing, so she kept moving forward. Eventually, she ran into Mu Qingchen and the others at the back mountain.
“Your Highness!” Mu Qingchen stepped forward to support her and glanced behind her. His gaze dimmed. “His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson…?”
Shangguan Yan was too worried to keep her usual composure. Her voice trembled. “Gongsun Yu is going to set the mountain on fire. Qing’er went to stop him.”
Mu Qingchen opened his mouth, stunned. He hadn’t expected this at all.
But hold on. In the first place, wasn’t the Eldest Imperial Grandson supposed to be at Cangxue Pass? Why was he in Pucheng anyway?
Besides, something felt off. This Eldest Imperial Grandson didn’t seem like the one he met in Shengdu.
Also, what was that explosion just now?
As for the sound, too many things had happened, and Shangguan Yan had momentarily forgotten to ask.
She only remembered that after they fell, Qing’er pulled a long iron tube from a haystack. It looked like a firecracker, or perhaps Great Yan’s black fire bead. It exploded with incredible force, even blasting Xie Hangzhou away.
“We have to find Qing’er quickly.” Shangguan Yan pulled out a porcelain bottle, tears brimming in her eyes. “He dropped his medicine. If the poison in his body acts up… he could die…”
Mu Qingchen said, “Let’s retrace our steps and see if we can find the small cave from earlier.”
Gongsun Yu had lost track of Shangguan Qing and Shangguan Yan in that cave. If Shangguan Qing was going after him, he would likely return there.
……
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Water dripped steadily onto Shangguan Qing’s face.
He was dreaming.
He dreamt of his childhood.
He often snuck off to play in the back mountains and sometimes visited the village to find playmates.
No one knew he was the Eldest Imperial Grandson. His mother never made him feel like his identity or his health made him any different.
If others climbed trees, he climbed too.
If others fought, he joined in.
If others drank from the stream, he did the same.
Though the cost was higher for him, he would simply avoid doing it again if it hurt. His mother never overprotected him.
He once believed all children suffered poison flare-ups a few times a month, and that none of them lived past twenty.
It wasn’t until he overheard servants talking that he learned his condition was unique.
He asked his mother why.
She told him everyone was born different. Some lived in wealth, others in poverty; some were beautiful, others plain; some were smart, others not; some strong, others weak.
Some were born commoners, and some as royalty.
Lives came in different forms, and lifespans varied.
But they were all normal.
Because his mother never treated him differently from normal people, he never felt troubled by his condition or pitied himself.
He accepted his life and death calmly. If anything saddened him, it was the thought of leaving behind the people he cared about.
Smack!
A large droplet of water splashed on his face.
It half-woke him, his eyelids twitching slightly.
“Still, still can’t… die…”
“My Lord! There’s movement ahead!”
Voices of Jin soldiers came from the end of the passage.
Then came the sound of hurried footsteps.
A hand grabbed Shangguan Qing by the collar and hoisted him up from the ground, exclaiming in disbelief, “My Lord! It’s the Eldest Imperial Grandson of Great Yan!”
Clatter.
Something fell to the ground.
The man picked it up and looked. “My Lord, not sure what this is?”
“Bring everything.” Gongsun Yu said coolly.
He was standing at a fork; ahead was the passage where Shangguan Qing lay while behind was the tunnel leading to the surface, and to either side were two more paths. One connected to the small cave they had come through.
As for the last path, no one knew where it led.
The guard carried Shangguan Qing in one hand and the firelance in the other, striding over to Gongsun Yu.
He didn’t care whether Shangguan Qing’s body could withstand the rough treatment.
Shangguan Qing’s knees were scraped and bleeding from being dragged.
“Still breathing?” Gongsun Yu asked.
“He’s alive!” the guard replied, then violently tossed Shangguan Qing to the ground, bent over, and reached for his hair to lift his head for his Lordship to see.
But the moment his hand stretched out, a faint whistling sound cut through the air, soft and light, like an illusion.
Then he saw his own hand fly off!
——His arm was still there, still reaching for the hair, but the hand… was gone!
“Aaah————”
Realizing what had happened, he let out a blood-curdling scream!
Blood spurted like a fountain!
Just as it was about to spray onto Shangguan Qing’s back, a youth in dark clothing flashed by and scooped Shangguan Qing off the ground!
The youth stepped onto the opposite stone wall, rebounded with force, landed on one knee, and stabilized himself back on the path they had come from.
Another enemy expert drew his blade and slashed toward the youth!
The dark-robed youth was holding Shangguan Qing with both hands and couldn’t draw a weapon.
From behind him, Marquis Xuanping stepped out with a cold gaze and kicked the attacker square in the chest!
Marquis Xuanping: “You dare lay a hand on my son?!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
