Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Everyone in the camp now knew that Marquis Xuanping was Commander Xiao’s biological father, so they respectfully addressed him as Lord Xiao.
Shangguan Yan's face darkened. “You again?”
Marquis Xuanping said, “I was just passing by. How is that my fault?”
Shangguan Yan ignored him.
She wasn’t one to throw tantrums or act petty in front of a man.
Marquis Xuanping smirked. “What? Missing my son already?”
Is JiaoJiao your son?
Shangguan Yan shot him a glare and turned to enter Gu Jiao’s tent.
Marquis Xuanping touched his nose helplessly.
Women were truly hard to understand.
He shook his head and went back to his own tent.
As he walked, he muttered, “Where has that Tang fellow taken my son? Why isn’t he back yet?”
There wasn’t much to do in the camp, and with the battle against the Liang army at dawn, Marquis Xuanping went to bed early to rest up.
In the middle of the night, he had a hazy dream.
He dreamt of a slender young man, whose face closely resembled Ah Heng’s, but wasn’t quite the same.
The boy suddenly appeared before him and reached out his hand.
Strangely, he recognized him as the son he had with Qin Fengwen.
Joy filled his heart as he stepped forward. “Son!”
But just as he was about to reach out and touch him, a long sword shot out of the darkness and pierced the boy’s chest from behind.
Boom——
Thunder roared across the sky!
Marquis Xuanping jolted awake from the nightmare.
His clothes were drenched in cold sweat.
Why would he dream of such a thing?
He hadn’t even meet this son, and he was already——
Nonsense!
His son was perfectly fine.
Once the war was over, he would take Xiao Qing back to meet his mother.
He had never seen Qin Fengwen truly lose her composure. He figured that moment would come soon.
This son would surely be well-behaved.
……
Ghost Mountain.
Night had fallen. After a full day of work, the villagers and ghost soldiers had all returned to their homes, and the once lively village became quiet.
While Quyang was stormy and loud, Pucheng enjoyed a calm, pleasant night.
Gu Jiao lay in the small hut Shangguan Qing had arranged for her, gazing up at the stars through the window. “Looks like tomorrow will be another clear autumn day.”
Tang Yueshan snored thunderously in the room next door.
The Black Wind King wasn’t resting. It stood watch outside the hut with the other Black Wind Cavalry horse, eyes closed in a light doze.
Gu Jiao listened to the mountain breeze and admired the moonlight, feeling a rare peace within.
“Big Boss, we’re heading back tomorrow.” She said to the Black Wind King outside the window.
The Black Wind King snorted in response.
Then it snorted again, signaling that Gu Jiao should go to sleep.
Seeing her big, sparkling eyes still wide open, it simply stuck its head through the window and blocked out the moonlight.
Gu Jiao: “…”
Fine.
I’ll sleep.
Gu Jiao turned over, and under the Black Wind King’s watch, she closed her eyes and drifted into sleep.
“My Lord…”
“My Lord…”
“My Lord…”
In her dream, Gu Jiao faintly heard voices calling her.
Who was it?
Gu Jiao didn't sleep well. She turned over and fell off the bed with a thud!
“Who, who, who?!”
In the next room, Tang Yueshan jolted awake, startled. Sensing no danger, he hugged his big bow and went back to sleep.
Gu Jiao’s fall was not light.
She had been dreaming again. Someone had been calling her, not just one person.
Some called her “My Lord,” others...
She didn’t catch the rest as she had woken from the fall.
The Black Wind King poked its head in.
“I’m fine.” Gu Jiao said, rubbing the lump on her head as she stood up.
The fall had fully shaken off her sleepiness.
Earlier in the night, the sky had been clear. Now, dark clouds covered the sky.
“Looks like it’s going to rain.”
The room felt stuffy, so Gu Jiao stepped out for air.
She stood beside the Black Wind King, shoulder to shoulder, gazing at the ink-darkened mountain range.
Suddenly, her head turned instinctively toward the east.
The Black Wind King happened to be standing on that side. It nudged her head away with its own.
Don’t look.
Gu Jiao turned again.
Black Wind King nudged her away again.
She simply jumped onto its back and looked anyway.
Blinking, she said, “Big Boss, wanna take a stroll in the back mountain?”
Unable to manage its unruly “child,” the Black Wind King let out a sigh.
It carried Gu Jiao toward the back mountain.
The forest there was protected by a formation, guarded by ghost soldiers. There were no patrols in the village itself.
Black Wind King walked softly, not waking a single villager.
To prevent villagers from entering by mistake, Shangguan Qing had a chest-high fence built around the area.
Black Wind King leapt over it easily.
Gu Jiao patted its mane proudly. “Big Boss, you’re amazing.”
Black Wind King: Save the flattery.
They arrived at the base of the mountain. Gu Jiao dismounted and stared at the pitch-black slope, muttering, “The back mountain’s so big. Where’s that Ghost King? Oh well, let’s go in first.”
They climbed the slope and entered a dense forest.
Few ever set foot here, and it was far lusher than the front mountain.
A venomous snake slithered down from a branch and flicked its tongue at Gu Jiao menacingly.
She casually reached out and grabbed it.
The snake: “...!!”
Unimpressed, Gu Jiao tossed it aside.
They continued forward.
Gu Jiao hadn’t expected it to be easy, but the moment they exited the woods, she saw a graveyard.
At the highest point sat a general, clad in armor, holding a long sword, motionless… as if he had turned to stone.
He held a three-foot longsword, its cold gleam heavy with weight.
In that instant, Gu Jiao understood what Shangguan Qing had meant.
Shangguan Qing hadn’t exaggerated.
This man was truly… “dead.”
There wasn’t a trace of life in him. Deep inside, he believed he was already gone.
Only a broken shell remained in the world, an empty husk without a soul.
The moon broke through thick clouds, casting a pale, cold light over the graveyard… and over him.
Crack!
His neck slowly twisted, stiffly turning toward Gu Jiao.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
