Pucheng, a silent midnight.

Xie Hangzhou and the swordsman returned to the City Lord's residence with Min Hongyi’s corpse.

Gu Jiao’s silver spear had pierced straight through Min Hongyi’s heart, killing him on the spot.

The swordsman pulled out the spear and brought only the corpse back.

The body was covered with a white cloth and carried into the reception hall of the residence.

A man in silver brocade robes stepped in. He looked about thirty, with a cold, sharp face and strong brows. Even without anger, he was intimidating and hard to approach.

His features leaned toward handsome, which occasionally softened his severity.

But anyone who underestimated him for it would soon be dead.

He was the most belligerent man in the State of Jin.

Min Hongyi was nothing compared to him.

Ordinary experts didn’t interest him, only warriors like Xuanyuan Li and Xuanyuan Sheng were worthy opponents in his eyes.

“Master!”

Upon seeing him, Xie Hangzhou immediately turned and cupped his hands respectfully.

Gongsun Yu exuded presence. He strode to the corpse and raised his hand slightly.

Xie Hangzhou knelt on one knee and uncovered Min Hongyi’s bloodied face.

Gongsun Yu’s expression remained unchanged.

Xie Hangzhou pulled the cloth down to the ankles, fully revealing the injuries.

“The fatal wound was the spear through the chest. He was also hit in the abdomen by a poisoned dart, and his thigh was twisted by a spear strike…”

Xie Hangzhou didn’t bother listing the smaller cuts as those alone were shocking enough.

Min Hongyi was a top expert in the State of Jin, Gongsun Yu’s first swordmaster. Even Xie Hangzhou couldn't say for sure he could have injured him like this.

“Hmm.” Gongsun Yu flicked his fingers.

Two guards stepped forward, covered the body again, and carried it out with the stretcher.

Gongsun Yu went to the head seat, swept aside his cloak, sat down, and asked coldly, “What exactly happened?”

Only Gongsun Yu, Xie Hangzhou, and the surviving swordsman remained in the hall.

The swordsman, as the first witness, should have answered. But Xie Hangzhou stepped up instead, admitting his failure, “Master, it was my mistake. I shouldn’t have stayed outside Ghost Mountain to coordinate with Min Hongyi. Had I gone with him, this tragedy might have been avoided.”

Gongsun Yu didn’t care much about the process, only the outcome.

The outcome was that Min Hongyi was dead, and no amount of blame on Xie Hangzhou could reverse that.

Xie Hangzhou was still useful.

So Gongsun Yu wouldn’t dismiss him.

“How many came back?” He asked coldly.

Xie Hangzhou braced himself and replied, “One.”

Min Hongyi.

And only a cold corpse.

His five hundred men were wiped out in the forest, not a single strand of hair recovered.

“Ghost Mountain…” Gongsun Yu clenched his fist and shut his eyes. “That’s where my grandfather, Jin’s Old War God, died!”

The Old War God of Jin, Gongsun Yu’s grandfather, had fought bravely all his life, only to die in a battle at Ghost Mountain over thirty years ago.

——His body was never found!

The one who killed him was the Lord of the Shadows of the State of Yan!

——The very man who founded the Imperial Advisor’s Hall and the Xuanyuan army!

The Jin imperial family and the Gongsun clan had spent over a decade wiping out the Lord of the Shadows’ followers one by one.

As for the forces he created, the Xuanyuan army had been destroyed. Only the Imperial Advisor’s Hall remained.

The day Gongsun Yu led his army into Shengdu, he would personally burn the Imperial Advisor’s Hall to the ground!

Gongsun Yu looked calmly at the swordsman before him. “Elder Lu, I sent you to rescue someone, yet you returned with only a corpse. Has the Sword Lodge lost its loyalty to the court, or just its former strength?”

Elder Lu replied evenly, “I refuse to admit either. But if you insist, I won’t argue. We suffered heavy losses in this campaign against the State of Yan. Elder He and two inner disciples died in Quyang, Elder Fang died trying to save Min Hongyi at Ghost Mountain. I couldn’t even retrieve his body.”

Gongsun Yu said bluntly, “Looks like without Shi Tian and An Hun, Sword Lodge truly is in decline.”

Elder Lu gave a faint, mocking smile. “Decline is too strong a word. The State of Yan just had some unexpectedly powerful experts. We underestimated them and didn’t send stronger swordsmen. Speaking of which, may I ask, General Gongsun, why was the enemy intelligence so vague? If I’d known about those experts, I would have made other arrangements.”

Gongsun Yu clenched his fist. “Experts? Humph, just a bunch of bandits!”

He disliked Elder Lu’s sarcastic tone, but Sword Lodge held a special position in the State of Jin, as the sect master’s younger sister was an imperial consort.

Besides, he still had use for Elder Lu.

Gongsun Yu turned to Xie Hangzhou. “How many enemy survivors are in the forest?”

Xie Hangzhou thought, Why are you asking me? I didn’t enter the forest.

He subtly shot a pleading look at Elder Lu.

Elder Lu replied blandly, “No more than five hundred, at most. Realistically, likely just over three hundred.”

Gongsun Yu slammed the armrest. “Just over three hundred, and they dared to play tricks in Ghost Mountain!”

It was a disgrace.

A disgrace to the entire Jin army!

A top general of Jin led five hundred elite troops, yet lost to three hundred scattered outlaws!

“Xie Hangzhou!” Gongsun Yu gripped the armrest, eyes cold.

“Here!” Xie Hangzhou cupped his fist.

Gongsun Yu ordered, “Tomorrow morning, take twenty thousand troops and flatten Ghost Mountain!”

Xie Hangzhou was stunned.

Twenty thousand… to crush three hundred? That was overkill.

But on second thought, he understood.

The Old War God had died at Ghost Mountain, and the Jin army had been weakened ever since, not daring to face the State of Yan for over a decade.

To Gongsun Yu, Ghost Mountain was a place of hatred. He had long wanted to level it.

This was personal.

He would use the grass, the beasts, and the soldiers of Ghost Mountain… to honor the Old War God’s soul.

Gongsun Yu’s tone was calm, but his words were chilling, “Kill cleanly. Don’t leave even a rabbit behind.”

Xie Hangzhou dropped to one knee, fist on the ground. “Understood!”

……

Quyang.

Shangguan Yan had waited all day at the camp, but Gu Jiao still hadn’t returned. She paced back and forth inside Gu Jiao’s tent.

Huan’er sat nearby, resting her head in her hand, dozing like a pecking chick until her forehead hit the table.

She jumped up in a panic. “M-my apologies…”

“Go check the entrance again.” Shangguan Yan said.

“Yes!” Huan’er lifted the curtain and went to the camp entrance, peering down the main road for a while, but saw no one.

She returned to report, “Lord Xiao isn’t back yet.”

“Still not back? It’s been a full day and night.” Shangguan Yan clutched her chest. “I don’t know why, but I feel uneasy.”

Huan’er comforted her, “Lord Xiao is clever, he’ll be fine!”

“Lord Xiao!”

Suddenly, Advisor Hu’s voice came from outside the tent.

JiaoJiao was back!

Before Huan’er could lift the curtain, Shangguan Yan rushed over and flung it open, only to see the annoying Marquis Xuanping.

Marquis Xuanping was just passing by.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
