In the middle of the night, Gu Jiao once again made her way to the secret chamber.

She was not the least bit surprised to find the Imperial Advisor already inside.

Lately, this man had been coming here quite frequently.

Yet, he never seemed to do anything that would pose a threat to her.

"I will keep watch over him tonight." Just as Gu Jiao placed the little medicine chest into the recess, the Imperial Advisor suddenly spoke.

“I’ll watch over him myself.” Gu Jiao replied.

“Are you sure?” The Imperial Advisor asked.

Gu Jiao had a feeling that there was a deeper meaning behind his words. "What exactly are you trying to say?"

The Imperial Advisor said calmly, "You and your group managed to deceive quite a few people all at once. The five from Imperial Consort Wang’s side may not know much about you, but the Han Family members, on the other hand, are at least somewhat aware of the truth."

How did this guy even know about their scheme against those imperial consorts?

The Imperial Advisor added indifferently, “In the future, if you’re letting someone in, don’t use the main entrance.”

One imperial consort after another disguised themselves to sneak in—did they really think the disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall were blind?

Lady Nan had just finished brewing the final antidote for Gu Changqing. She rubbed her sore neck, carefully poured the medicine into a porcelain bottle, and prepared to return to her room to rest.

Before that, she made a quick stop at Gu Xiaoshun and Gu Yan’s room.

The two children were sound asleep.

She then closed the door to Old Master Meng’s room. The old man’s snoring was quite loud.

Finally, dragging her weary body, she collapsed onto her own bed.

The summer heat was sweltering, and the incessant chirping of cicadas filled the air, blending seamlessly into the night.

The sound of cicadas provided the perfect cover for the faint rustling of fabric brushing against the darkness.

Several shadowy figures silently crept into the courtyard.

They approached the main hall door, drew their daggers, and began prying at the latch.

Gu Yan suddenly woke up. He held his breath and focused his hearing. The noise at the door was extremely faint, but he still caught it.

He reached out and nudged Gu Xiaoshun.

Half-asleep, Gu Xiaoshun groggily turned over and mumbled, "What…"

Gu Yan immediately covered his mouth. “Shhh——”

Gu Xiaoshun froze. After three seconds of disoriented confusion, he fully woke up and stared at Gu Yan in shock.

Gu Yan pulled back the bed curtain and pointed toward the door.

Someone was outside.

Gu Xiaoshun sat up in one swift motion.

His movements were quick but light, making almost no sound.

He gave Gu Yan a meaningful glance, as if to say, ‘I'll go check it out. You wait here.’

In terms of age, Gu Xiaoshun was actually a year younger than Gu Yan. However, Gu Yan had always been the frail and sickly one, so Gu Xiaoshun had long grown used to protecting him.

Gu Yan shook his head, signaling that there was no need to check and that he should wake up their master and Lady Nan instead.

Got it.

Gu Xiaoshun silently replied in his mind. Without even putting on his shoes, he went barefoot to the room where Master Lu and Lady Nan were sleeping.

As he passed through the main hall, he could distinctly hear the faint sound of someone trying to pick the lock. However, the door latch was no ordinary one; it had been modified by Master Lu, the most skilled craftsman in the State of Zhao. It wasn’t something that could be easily pried open.

Of course, there was always the possibility that they might lose patience and resort to brute force, like kicking the door down.

Gu Xiaoshun needed to act quickly.

He gently shook Lady Nan awake.

Startled from her sleep in the middle of the night, Lady Nan was about to speak when Gu Xiaoshun quickly covered her mouth.

This was a trick he had learned from Gu Yan.

It worked flawlessly.

Lady Nan, being someone with extensive experience, immediately realized something was wrong when Gu Xiaoshun woke her up in the middle of the night and silenced her. She blinked a couple of times in acknowledgment and then kicked Master Lu awake.

“What’s going on?” Master Lu asked, still groggy and confused.

Lady Nan glared at him and whispered sharply, “Keep your voice down! Someone’s here!”

Master Lu instantly became alert.

Lady Nan, who usually got up once or twice during the night, slept on the outer side of the bed. Master Lu carefully climbed over her, grabbed the axe from the table, and moved toward the door.

Lady Nan quickly put on her shoes, threw on a robe, and followed Master Lu to the main hall.

Click.

After a faint sound, the latch was finally pried open.

The door was pushed open from the outside, and a figure dressed in black stepped inside.

However, what greeted him was a gleaming axe aimed directly at him.

Fortunately, the man was skilled. Had he been an ordinary thief, he would have been cleaved in two by the axe.

The man quickly stepped back to dodge the swing, but while he managed to avoid the blade, his clothes were not so lucky. The axe tore through his garments, slicing his belt clean off.

Seeing this, the four men behind him immediately drew the swords at their waists.

One of them pulled the man aside and lunged at Master Lu with his sword!

Lady Nan’s eyes turned icy. “Dream on if you think you can hurt my husband!”

With a flick of her fingers, three Tanghua needles shot toward the attacker!

The man had no choice but to abandon his strike and swing his sword to deflect the hidden weapons.

He managed to block two of the needles, but the third struck him in the arm.

A sharp, unusual pain spread through his arm. His brow furrowed, and his face twisted in anger as he growled, “Poison!”

Lady Nan unleashed another volley of hidden weapons. This time, it wasn’t just Tanghua Needles but also poisoned darts coated with a lethal toxin.

Meanwhile, Gu Xiaoshun wasn’t idle either. He pulled out a newly crafted mechanical box and hurled it toward the intruders in the courtyard!

“Xiaoshun!”

Master Lu hurriedly shut one side of the room’s door and used his axe to shield Gu Xiaoshun and Lady Nan behind him.

A series of sharp metallic sounds rang out as the door was riddled with holes.

Master Lu wiped the cold sweat from his brow and turned to Gu Xiaoshun. “Next time you make hidden weapons, can you make one that doesn’t endanger your own people?”

Gu Xiaoshun scratched his head sheepishly, “Oh.”
