Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Shangguan Yan was right, she had nothing left to lose. On the other hand, they couldn’t afford to gamble with their children’s futures or the survival of their entire families.
Several people were so furious that their faces turned ashen.
Imperial Consort Wang said coldly, “Isn’t your son still alive? Aren’t you afraid of dragging him down with you by rushing to your death like this?”
Shangguan Yan laughed arrogantly, “When I conspired with the Xuanyuan Family to rebel and was demoted to a commoner, my son wasn’t implicated. Do you think a mere attempt to frame a few of you would make my imperial father hold it against my son?”
This wasn’t an empty boast.
The Emperor’s indulgent favoritism toward Shangguan Qing was well-known to all.
Imperial Consort Wang clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deep into her palms, “What exactly do you want from us?”
Shangguan Yan’s lips curled into a mocking smile, saying, “I don’t want anything. I simply enjoy watching you all panic and squirm in fear. It makes me happy! When I’ve had my fill of amusement, I’ll hand these pieces of evidence over to imperial father. Then, we can all reunite in afterlife and pay our respects to my imperial mother together!”
“Madwoman!” Imperial Consort Chen stomped her foot in anger.
In the neighboring room, Gu Jiao and Gu Chengfeng clung to the wall like octopuses, their ears practically glued to it.
“Hmm, it seems like they’ve left.” Gu Jiao said.
Xiao Heng peered through the crack in the door at the departing figures and responded inwardly, Yeah, I can see it.
Gu Chengfeng stepped away from the wall and straightened up, looking puzzled. “But I don’t get it. Why not just make a direct demand of them? For example, ask them to exchange the evidence they used to frame the Xuanyuan Family?”
Back then, so many of the charges against the Xuanyuan Family were fabricated by these noble families.
If they could obtain those pieces of evidence, they could clear the Xuanyuan Family’s name.
Gu Jiao replied, “We can’t make the first move. That would reveal our bottom line.”
Never let anyone know your bottom line. Detachment was strength. Having no demands was the ultimate demand.
Make your opponents willingly lay all their cards on the table before you.
These were lessons from her Godfather.
Gu Jiao felt that her grandaunt’s approach was absolutely correct.
If Shangguan Yan had revealed her intention of seeking redress for the Xuanyuan Family, Imperial Consort Wang and the others would immediately realize that she didn’t truly wish to die. They would understand that she had a goal and could be negotiated with.
In that case, the five of them might turn the evidence around and use it to threaten Shangguan Yan.
Now, they were left to beg Shangguan Yan instead, racking their brains to find a reason for her to want to live.
The evidence to clear the Xuanyuan Family’s name would undoubtedly be delivered to Shangguan Yan, and it would likely be much more than just the evidence.
Imperial Consort Wang and the other four made a fuss the entire night. Only when the night deepened that silence finally enveloped the entire Qilin Hall, falling into a tranquil slumber.
Little Jing Kong slept at Xiao Heng’s room tonight. The reason? His grandaunt had been kicked several times by his tiny feet and had resolutely decided she would never again share a bed with this little monk who had such terrible sleeping habits!
In the courtyard, Gu Jiao removed the last bandage from the Black Wind King. Its injuries had fully healed.
She patted its head gently.
In three days, she would take the Black Wind King to assume command of the Black Wind Camp.
The path they were about to embark on was finally the right one, but there was still a long journey ahead. They couldn’t afford to relax for even a moment. They couldn’t let a temporary victory make them complacent. They had to remain vigilant and always be ready for battle.
“Give it to me.” Xiao Heng walked over and said.
Gu Jiao was momentarily stunned. “Huh? Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Xiao Heng took the bandages from her hands and raised his other hand to gently smooth her hair at her temple. “Aren’t you still awake too?”
Gu Jiao let out an “oh” and said, “I came to check on the Black Wind King.”
Xiao Heng replied, “I came to check on you.”
His gaze was deep and tender, filled with affection for the person before him.
Gu Jiao blinked her eyes.
This guy was becoming more and more bold as he grew older. The moment no one was around, he would start flirting with her. He would catch her off guard with a killer gaze. He was practically a walking hormone dispenser. At this rate, she wouldn’t be able to handle it.
From a physiological perspective, her body was gradually maturing, making her more susceptible to the influence of male hormones.
Gu Jiao: It’s not my fault—it’s the hormones.
Before Xiao Heng could say anything, he saw the young lady shaking her head vigorously. Amused, he asked, “Why are you shaking your head? Are you trying to tell me not to check on you?”
“You can check.” Gu Jiao responded.
Xiao Heng chuckled softly.
Suddenly, Gu Jiao leaned forward, resting her little head against his firm chest, her forehead pressing into him.
Xiao Heng extended his strong, slender arm and gently patted her shoulder. “Are you tired?”
Gu Jiao, still leaning against his chest, shook her head. “I’m not tired, but I feel tired on behalf of Grandaunt and Granduncle. They’re so old, yet they still have to worry about so many things. Grandaunt doesn’t even like scheming and plotting, she prefers playing cards in Bishui Alley.”
Xiao Heng let out a chuckle. “Grandaunt may love playing cards, but she loves you even more.”
Your safety and happiness are the greatest joys of her remaining years.
“Mm.” Gu Jiao stayed where she was, nestled against him like a lazy little calf.
She rarely allowed herself to relax like this. It seemed that only in front of him could she let even a sliver of her exhaustion show.
Gu Jiao was indeed worn out these days.
It seemed that ever since she entered Great Yan, she had never had a moment to rest, be it the polo match, Gu Yan’s surgery, the conflicts with the Han Family and the Nangong Family, the struggle over the Black Wind Cavalry—she had been spinning like a relentless little top.
And yet, she still worried about others being tired, completely forgetting just how exhausted she herself was.
Looking at the small head resting in his embrace, Xiao Heng’s gaze deepened. “Three months at most,” he said firmly. “I’ll bring an end to everything here in Great Yan.”
“Mm.” Gu Jiao’s response carried a tone of complete trust.
Xiao Heng held her close and asked gently, “When it’s all over, what do you want to do?”
Gu Jiao thought seriously for a moment before replying, “Devour you.”
Xiao Heng: “...”
......
The couple lingered in the courtyard for a while. It wasn’t until they were nearly carried off by mosquitoes that Xiao Heng took Gu Jiao’s hand and led her back into the room.
Standing at the doorway, Xiao Heng said, “Go inside.”
Gu Jiao didn’t respond, seemingly lost in thought.
Xiao Heng tapped her forehead lightly with his fingertip. “What are you thinking about?”
Gu Jiao snapped out of it and replied, “Nothing, I just suddenly remembered what Nangong Li said to me before he died.”
"I truly deserve to die… I betrayed you…betrayed the Xuanyuan Family. My death is not undeserved... that you’ve come for revenge... I’m not surprised... there’s nothing... to feel wronged about... But do you... really think all of what happened back then was the Nangong Family’s doing? You’re wrong... Hahaha... You’re gravely mistaken... The Nangong Family... weren’t even accomplices! They were just a hunting dog trying to snatch a piece of the fat meat..."
"The one who truly destroyed your Xuanyuan Family... is... is…”
Gu Jiao recalled, “Something like ‘Jin.’ It sounded like ‘Yang,’ but it could’ve been ‘Liang.’ His speech was already unclear by then.”
“Jingyang?” Xiao Heng suggested. “The Emperor of Great Yan is named Shangguan Jingyang.”
Gu Jiao nodded. “Mm, that should be it.”
Xiao Heng placed his hands firmly on her shoulders, his expression serious. “Whether or not the Emperor of Great Yan agrees, the Xuanyuan Family will be vindicated.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
