Inside the infirmary, Susan Caldwell was crying her eyes out, claiming that Vera Xavier had set her up and demanding that Sheldon Caldwell get justice for her.
Sheldon Caldwell was furious when he heard this. He bit his tongue for five minutes until the doctor finished treating her wounds, then he finally snapped, "I already know everything that happened. Susan Caldwell, how dare you ask me to get justice for you? What you should be worrying about is whether or not you’re going to be expelled! I’m calling Dad right now to let him know about all the ’great’ things you’ve been up to at school!"
Susan Caldwell was stunned. Through her tears, she cried, "Sheldon Caldwell, I’m your own sister! You can’t just abandon me!"
The sight of her infuriated him. After a long, choked silence, he finally said, "I wish you weren’t my sister!"
Susan Caldwell stared at him, utterly shocked. Just then, the Dean of Students approached. "Deputy General Manager Caldwell, the principal would like to see you."
Sheldon Caldwell shot Susan Caldwell a look before turning and walking out. The moment he was gone, Susan immediately went to a phone booth and dialed Julian Caldwell’s number. "Dad, Sheldon and Vera Xavier are ganging up on me..."
The first thing Sheldon Caldwell said when he arrived at the principal’s office was, "This incident is Susan Caldwell’s fault. She must be punished severely, but the girls who attacked her must be punished as well."
Lane Yancey smiled and waved a hand. "In all the years since Veridia University was founded, this is the first time we’ve encountered something like this. I’ll take your words into account, Deputy General Manager Caldwell. That’s why I’m planning to convene an all-school assembly, to make this a lesson for all our students."
Sheldon Caldwell sighed inwardly. ’This time, Susan has truly disgraced herself. I’m embarrassed by association; after all, she is my own sister.’
Lane Yancey looked at him and asked, "What punishment do you propose for Susan Caldwell?"
The question caught Sheldon Caldwell off guard. ’Considering what Susan did, her actions are more than enough to warrant expulsion under Veridia University’s rules. But if she’s actually expelled, I’m afraid my prideful father would have my hide.’
’But it wasn’t in his nature to pull strings with Lane Yancey; he could never bring himself to do it.’
And so, after a moment’s deliberation, he said, "Let’s handle this according to the school’s regulations."
Lane Yancey’s gaze held a newfound admiration. "I’d heard that you, Deputy General Manager Caldwell, were as upright and impartial as Dean Sullivan, and today I’ve seen it for myself. However, a university is a place for education and growth. Even when students make mistakes, we should give them a second chance."
Sheldon Caldwell breathed a small sigh of relief, but Lane Yancey continued, "However, this incident also involves another student—the true victim. We need to ask for her opinion on the matter."
Sheldon Caldwell glanced at Lane Yancey. ’Wily old fox,’ he cursed inwardly. ’Does he have to pause for dramatic effect? Dragging this out with so many twists and turns... is he trying to keep me in suspense?’
Just then, the principal’s secretary entered. "Principal, Vera Xavier is here."
"Show her in," Lane Yancey said calmly.
In truth, Lane Yancey was quite curious about Vera Xavier. The only student in the university’s history to achieve a perfect score in every subject was a legend in her own right. And now, not long after the semester had begun, she had already stirred up a storm that had the whole campus talking.
When Vera Xavier entered, Lane Yancey was taken aback. She was not at all what he had expected. She was exceptionally beautiful, with an aura that was at once gentle and distant, tinged with a scholarly air. No matter how he looked at her, she simply didn’t seem like the type to stir up trouble.
