After Sheldon Caldwell carried Susan Caldwell to the infirmary, the drill instructors had the freshmen fall back into formation for their military training, but the atmosphere felt completely different.
The drill instructors thought these girls were something else, daring to fight right in front of Sheldon Caldwell!
The girls themselves felt a bit dazed and scared in retrospect. ’Why on earth did we start hitting someone just now?’
Sheldon Caldwell had said to isolate the girls involved in the fight first. However, the drill instructors had no idea what to do with Vera Xavier. The fight seemed to have started because of her, but she had only pushed Susan Caldwell once and hadn’t participated in the brawl that followed.
Most importantly, the drill instructors knew she was a special case. Sheldon Caldwell had already denied that she was his girlfriend, but then someone had personally seen her walk into Veridia University hand-in-hand with Nathaniel Nathan. In their minds, Nathaniel Nathan was an even more formidable figure than their own regimental commander.
So while all the other girls involved in the fight were isolated together, Vera Xavier alone stood off to the side, looking as if nothing had happened.
She glanced at the somewhat frightened expressions on the faces of the girls who had fought. After a moment’s thought, she walked right over and stood among them in their group.
The drill instructors had been in the middle of reprimanding the girls. They froze for a second when they saw her join the group, and their train of thought was completely derailed. In their eyes, Vera Xavier was now a huge problem, yet she had the appearance of someone utterly harmless and well-behaved.
The drill instructor asked Vera Xavier, "What are you doing over here?"
Vera Xavier said seriously, "This whole thing started because of me. I’ll stand with them. Fighting is wrong, but I believe they were on the side of justice."
Her words immediately drew everyone’s attention. They all stared at her in surprise.
She said calmly, "Before, you wanted to hit me because Susan Caldwell incited you. But then you realized the real culprit was Susan herself. She was trying to use you to get to me. You were disgusted by her actions, so even though you resorted to violence, you were still fighting for what’s right!"
The girls looked at her, their eyes filled with gratitude. Someone shouted, "That’s right! We were in the right! Susan Caldwell deserved it!"
Hearing this, the drill instructor felt a headache coming on. ’So it turns out she’s the real master of manipulation, huh?’
He immediately yelled, "Quiet! You think you’re justified after hitting someone? All of you, get down and give me a hundred push-ups!"
"The Head Drill Instructor said he would handle this when he gets back. So you can’t punish us right now—especially since we didn’t do anything wrong!" Vera Xavier said, looking at the drill instructor.
With that one sentence, all the girls looked at Vera Xavier with a newfound sense of adoration. She was so incredible, daring to talk to a drill instructor like that.
The thought of Nathaniel Nathan made the drill instructor’s headache even worse. He shot Vera Xavier a glare, then sent someone to get Sheldon Caldwell. He’d never realized it before, but this Vera Xavier was a real handful!
Vera Xavier raised an eyebrow slightly. Deep down, she had never been a goody-two-shoes. She just hadn’t seen the need to show her edge before. But now that she had, she was going to make sure this situation unfolded exactly as she intended.
’Susan Caldwell wants so badly to win everyone over? Well, I’m not about to let her get her way!’
’Susan wants to claim the moral high ground? Then I’ll just have to kick her off it. That spot is mine now!’
