Nathaniel Nathan had just gotten home and was preparing to return to his unit when he received a call from Vera Xavier.
He had put the cell phone in her bag today simply to make it easier to contact her. He wanted to be able to call and hear her voice whenever he missed her, but he never imagined it would prove useful so quickly.
"Someone’s saying I cheated on you," Vera Xavier said, her voice laced with grievance. "They’re saying the person who kissed me that night was Sheldon Caldwell, and that I’m all tangled up with Shane Caldwell."
’As far as she was concerned, the only thing she had going for her at school was her grades. She didn’t have any other connections to speak of.’
’He’d told her before to just drop his name if she ever ran into trouble. But in this situation, name-dropping to Laura White didn’t seem like it would be very effective. It was better to just let him handle it!’
’Besides, this was Veridia. When you got down to it, this was his turf.’
’She had always thought she’d one day use Nathaniel Nathan’s influence to put Susan Caldwell in her place, but she never imagined the first person she’d have to deal with would be Laura White.’
Laura White froze when she heard Vera’s words. ’Normally, if a woman was really cheating on her boyfriend, who would dare to bring it up so openly? And from the sound of it, her boyfriend—this Nathaniel Nathan—seemed to know both Sheldon and Shane Caldwell.’
Nathaniel Nathan was silent on the other end for about five seconds. Then, in a low voice, he said, "Got it. I’ll handle this."
He hung up.
Vera Xavier lifted her foot from Laura White’s chest. Smiling, she said, "My boyfriend says he’s aware of the situation and will handle it. As for today, this isn’t something I can let slide with a simple apology from you."
Laura White’s expression was stormy. In truth, she and Vera Xavier had no real history of animosity. She was simply used to being the best, so it was only natural that she’d be resentful when someone like Vera—who was even more outstanding—suddenly appeared.
She had gotten to know Vera a little over this period. Honestly, she didn’t even particularly hate her. She just couldn’t stand being overshadowed by her.
On top of that, rumors about Vera had been flying everywhere. After hearing them so often, she started to believe some of them. Then she’d personally seen Vera go out with Sheldon Caldwell at night. When he brought her back, her lips were clearly swollen and freshly kissed.
That was why she’d concluded Vera was a bitch who used her good grades and pretty face to hook up with any man she could, shopping herself around for the highest bidder. Then, this morning, she saw Vera with Damian Yale at the entrance, and now suddenly there was a boyfriend in the picture. The injustice of it all made her see red.
’How could a manipulative girl like that get to be better than her?’
It was precisely this line of thinking that had caused her to lash out tonight.
But Vera’s current calm and composed demeanor made her suspect she might have misjudged the situation. Still, she had never been humiliated like this in her entire life. How could she possibly be expected to swallow this insult?
Besides, if Vera Xavier had connections, so did she! In a low voice, she snarled, "Who’s afraid of who? Vera Xavier, if I don’t get you kicked out of this school today, then my name isn’t Laura White!"
With a sniffle, she went downstairs and headed for the public pay phone outside.
Fiona Wright and Shirley Ewing were stunned and uncertain. Shirley Ewing looked at Vera and said, "Vera, you’re an amazing friend for standing up to Laura White like that for me. But she seems to have powerful connections. I overheard her on the phone once... I think she has an uncle who’s a high-ranking official in Veridia. She’s probably going to call him for help right now. What if her uncle knows the principal? I’m worried this is going to be bad for you!"
