It was getting late. Nathaniel Nathan had a lot to do the next day, and Vera Xavier still had military training, so he couldn’t stay for long. He kissed Vera one last time, then turned and left.
By the time he left, Vera Xavier still hadn’t figured out where he’d gotten that military training uniform.
She started walking back, feeling a bit wistful, when Sheldon Caldwell suddenly popped out of the bushes, scaring her half to death. He pointed a finger at her and scolded sternly, "Vera Xavier, have you no self-respect? You’re a girl! How can you just throw yourself at a man like that?"
Vera Xavier felt a wave of embarrassment. ’So he was spying on me the whole time?’
’This ’brother’ of mine has the worst hobbies!’
Vera Xavier looked him up and down before asking, "In that case, how about I give you a hug, too?"
Sheldon Caldwell froze instantly. Vera Xavier curled her lip. "You didn’t actually think I was going to hug you, did you? I’m just messing with you!"
She turned to leave but suddenly remembered something. "Did you happen to call Nathaniel Nathan today?"
Sheldon Caldwell nodded. Vera Xavier pressed, "And did you gloat to him?"
Sheldon Caldwell nodded again. Vera finally understood why Nathaniel Nathan had shown up tonight. Sheldon had brought this all on himself. She narrowed her eyes. "Well then, you should remember to call him every day from now on. Make sure you gloat at least once a day, you hear?"
With that, she strode away. ’After tonight,’ she thought, ’even if Sheldon doesn’t call Nathaniel, he’ll probably start showing up every day anyway, won’t he?’
Vera wasn’t entirely sure, but she felt that this whole military training experience was becoming strange because of those two. She sighed. ’Can’t a girl just get through her training in peace?’
After hearing what Vera said, Sheldon was slow on the uptake, but he finally understood the reason for Nathaniel Nathan’s visit. He pinched the bridge of his nose. He swore to himself that he would never, ever gloat in front of Nathaniel again. ’Talk about digging your own grave!’
As Vera was about to head back to her dorm, the students on the training field being punished with frog jumps looked like they were about to cry a river. ’This is freaking going to kill us!’ they thought.
Susan Caldwell genuinely felt like she was being tortured to tears. She was completely exhausted after just two laps.
The nearby instructors were not as good-tempered. "If you don’t finish tonight, you can forget about resting!" one of them shouted.
From the instructors’ perspective, slacking off during military training was absolutely intolerable, so they had a very poor impression of these students.
Susan Caldwell cursed Sheldon Caldwell again in her heart. ’I’m suffering so miserably out here,’ she fumed. ’I hope Vera gets punished too!’
Just as she was about to collapse from exhaustion, Vera Xavier walked over carrying a plastic bag filled with a dozen or so bottles of water. She smiled at the head instructor and said, "You’ve all worked so hard, training everyone this late. It’s hot out, please have some water!"
The instructors were a little surprised and couldn’t help but take a second look at Vera. She was already beautiful, and seeing her now, offering them water with a sweet smile, was a refreshing sight.
Just then, Susan Caldwell happened to land in front of one of the instructors. He pointed at Vera and yelled at Susan, "You’re both girls, so why is there such a big difference between you? She takes her training seriously and is even considerate of the instructors. But you, with your crooked ways, only think about how to slack off!"
Susan Caldwell’s head snapped around to glare at Vera. Smiling, Vera gave her a little wave in greeting.
