The moment the students and drill instructors left, Vera Xavier watched as Sheldon Caldwell deflated like a popped balloon. His once-imposing presence vanished in an instant, leaving him looking like a total wimp.
He asked grumpily, "What are you doing here?"
"To beat you up," Nathaniel Nathan answered crisply, his voice ice-cold.
Sheldon Caldwell pursed his lips. "Don’t think I’m scared of you. I’m telling you, Nathaniel Nathan, I’m a force to be reckoned with! But for Vera’s sake today—and because I pity you, not even being able to see your girl when she’s right here—I’ll let you off the hook. So don’t get too cocky!"
With that, he stormed off in a huff.
The corner of Vera Xavier’s mouth twitched as she watched him go. ’I really thought he would at least stand up to Nathaniel, maybe even start a fight. I never expected him to be such a wimp and just walk off. Looks like Nathaniel has beaten him so many times he’s practically traumatized.’
’Even if I go back to the Caldwell Family someday,’ she thought to herself, ’I probably can’t count on Sheldon to stand up for me if Nathaniel ever bullies me.’
Nathaniel Nathan’s brow furrowed slightly as he looked at Vera. He was standing right there, but she was still staring in Sheldon’s direction with a goofy grin. ’It’s a good thing I know he’s her brother and there’s nothing between them,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, the beating I just gave Sheldon would have been a lot worse.’
Still, even if Sheldon was her brother, this behavior of hers was unacceptable!
He reached out, turned her face toward him, and demanded, "Where are you looking?"
"At your handiwork!" By now, Vera was an expert at soothing his ego. "Look how pathetic he is! He’s been strutting around and giving us a hard time for two days straight, but the moment you show up, he turns into *this*!"
Then, she took his hand and wheedled, "You’re so amazing! A million times stronger than him. You’re my hero!"
Looking into her sparkling eyes, Nathaniel felt an odd sense of satisfaction. He said nonchalantly, "How about I go back and have a word with the chairman? I could have my own men take over your military training."
Vera froze for a second. While she didn’t know how Nathaniel trained his subordinates, she had already discovered that Sheldon was a completely different person during military training.
His sharp intensity, like a sword drawn from its sheath, and his no-nonsense demeanor during training had made her see him in a new light.
And if Sheldon was that intense, she couldn’t even imagine what Nathaniel would be like. In her past life, she knew he was a one-in-a-million talent. The division he currently led was the security company’s elite unit, unrivaled in the entire country.
As the saying goes, a weak general makes for a weak army. If the men under Nathaniel were this formidable, she couldn’t imagine how he must drill them. If he were really to lead her military training, he’d probably train her so hard she’d feel like she’d been flayed alive.
’I have a gut feeling. Despite how well he usually treats me, when it comes to training, he’d be the type to show no mercy, not even to his own family. No, that’s putting it lightly. He’d probably give me "special attention" precisely because of our relationship, and that would be true misery!’
So she cleared her throat and said, "Uh, that won’t be necessary. Sheldon might be a handful, but having you here to knock him down a peg is more than enough."
"So, what you’re saying is, you’re inviting me to come see you at school every night... and to deal with him while I’m here?" Nathaniel asked, looking at her.
Vera pressed her lips together. ’He was sharp, all right, twisting my words to find that logic.’ She had to hand it to him; she wasn’t impressed by much, but she was definitely impressed by him.
