With that, Vera Xavier gave him a respectful student-to-teacher bow, then politely said, "Goodbye, Mr. Shawcross!" and walked gracefully away from the school.
Isaac Shawcross watched her walk away and chuckled to himself. This girl was unlike any student he had ever taught. While her temper wasn’t the best, she was determined, mentally resilient, intelligent, and kind. She cherished life, meeting all his criteria for taking on a disciple.
However, the memory of his previous disciple made him let out a long sigh. ’I have to be cautious about taking on another one. I need to observe for a while longer and see what kind of person Vera Xavier truly is.’
When Vera Xavier arrived at the restaurant, the food had already been served. She froze for a second when she saw several bright red dishes loaded with chilies on the table. Then she remembered that Shirley Ewing was from Hundale and Fiona Wright was from Sylas, and it all clicked. ’My two roommates are the type who can’t live without spicy food!’
’The problem is, I can handle a little bit of spice, but there’s no way I can eat something this loaded with peppers!’
Fortunately, a non-spicy dish of fish with pickled greens was brought to the table just then. ’They have a conscience after all,’ she thought to herself.
The three girls chattered away, their conversation mainly revolving around Vera Xavier’s recent argument with Susan Caldwell.
Shirley Ewing and Fiona Wright asked the same question Isaac Shawcross had: whether there was some bad blood between Vera Xavier and Susan Caldwell.
This time, however, her answer was different from the one she’d given Isaac Shawcross. "Bringing up the past is just raking over old coals. But after what happened today, we definitely have a feud going. I’d guess she’s probably plotting how to kill me right now."
She added with a small smile, but Shirley Ewing and Fiona Wright had no idea that Susan Caldwell *genuinely* wanted to kill her—not in the casual way students say things like "I’m gonna kill you!" or "I’m dying of laughter."
Shirley Ewing pursed her lips. "I just don’t get it. Vera, you were saving someone. Why would she try to smear your name like that? What kind of deep-seated hatred would it take to do something like that?"
Fiona Wright, on the other hand, said, "I think what you said today was right, Vera. That Susan Caldwell is truly vicious. You have to be more careful from now on. I’ve heard her family has some serious connections."
In fact, word that Susan Caldwell had a powerful background had already spread all over campus.
Vera Xavier knew exactly what that background was. She let out a soft laugh and said only, "Yeah, I’ll be careful..."
She trailed off mid-sentence, pursing her lips. "Her ’background’ has arrived."
Shirley Ewing and Fiona Wright were baffled. They followed her gaze and saw Sheldon Caldwell walking into the restaurant.
Since Sheldon Caldwell had made everyone run ten laps the moment he arrived that day, he had already earned the illustrious title of "The Devil Instructor."
The moment they saw him, Shirley Ewing and Fiona Wright flinched instinctively. Students weren’t normally allowed off-campus during military training, but that rule hadn’t been enforced yet since it was only the first day of school.
Even so, they were still terrified, worried they had done something wrong and would be punished horribly for it.
Sheldon Caldwell, however, brazenly sat down on the other side of the square table, fixed his gaze on Vera Xavier, and said, "Caused quite a stir again today, didn’t you?"
"If you’re here to stick up for your little sister, I’m going to be sorely disappointed," Vera Xavier said calmly. "This is between us girls. We can solve it ourselves. Isn’t it pathetic for a grown man to interfere?"
