Chapter 608: Chapter 608: Are You Crazy? (6)

"I don’t hold anything against her, but she might think I do. After all, I’m more outstanding than she is. Girls tend to be a little narrow-minded, so I can understand why she’d be jealous of me," Vera Xavier replied.

Isaac Shawcross’s lip twitched when he heard her. "You’re a girl yourself. Are you saying you’re narrow-minded too?"

"Of course not. I’m not your average girl!" Vera said with a smile. "That’s why I’m so broad-minded."

Isaac Shawcross was speechless. ’She’s playing word games with me!’

He, a master of literature, never imagined he’d one day be bested by a play on words.

He glared at her. "I’ve never met a girl as cheeky as you."

"Thank you!" Vera said with a smile.

"I’m insulting you. Why are you thanking me?" Isaac couldn’t help but ask.

Vera beamed. "Because everyone has always told me that mischievous kids are the smart ones. So, Mr. Shawcross, you were praising my intelligence. And when someone compliments you, it’s only right to say thank you."

This time, Isaac couldn’t help but laugh. He shook his head slightly and said, "You rascal!"

After that, he got straight to the point. He found this girl far too amusing; if he didn’t steer the conversation now, he’d end up chatting with her all day. He asked, "How did you know that student went into cardiac arrest today? And where did you learn those first-aid techniques?"

Although he hadn’t seen Vera’s methods himself, the fact that she could revive a student from cardiac arrest proved her technique was professional.

The smile on Vera’s face faded as she replied seriously, "I saw that his complexion looked wrong, so I checked his pulse and found it was abnormal. My initial diagnosis was cardiac arrest, so I immediately used the resuscitation methods my grandfather taught me."

"Your grandfather?" Isaac asked. "Does medicine run in your family?"

Vera nodded. "Yes, but no one in my father’s generation wanted to study it. My grandfather passed away when I was young, so I didn’t get to learn much of his medical expertise."

"You’ve done exceptionally well," Isaac said with a touch of admiration. "You saved a life today, after all."

At this, he remembered something and asked, "From the way you talk, it sounds like you’re quite interested in studying medicine?"

"Yes," Vera nodded. "I’m very interested."

And so, Isaac asked the same question Brooke Mitchell had posed two days before: "If you’re so interested in medicine, why didn’t you go to Valeroot University of Medicine? Why come to Veridia University to study Chinese Language and Literature?"

After asking, he felt a strange sense of nervousness. He was worried Vera would give a capricious answer, like that Veridia University was more prestigious, or that she’d only applied to prove she was smart enough to get in.

Vera was only eighteen, and a brilliant one at that, so a little willfulness wouldn’t be out of place. But such capriciousness would also indicate a lack of responsibility toward her own future. No matter how intelligent she was, she could end up accomplishing nothing.

That kind of personality was not suited for the study of medicine.

But once again, Vera’s answer surprised him. "When I was very young, my grandfather told me that to truly master traditional Chinese medicine, you must have a strong foundation in literature. You have to understand five thousand years of culture, be versed in the *I Ching*, and be able to comprehend the *Four Books and Five Classics*. That’s why, since ancient times, the greatest physicians have also been Confucian scholars. Those who become true masters of the medical arts all possess a profound literary foundation."
