Chapter 585: Chapter 585: Training Begins (1)
As far as Nathaniel Nathan was concerned, Vera Xavier was in much better shape than most girls. The training might put most people through the wringer, but Vera definitely wouldn’t be one of them.
Most importantly, Nathaniel didn’t think someone with Sheldon Caldwell’s intelligence could ever get the better of Vera.
Sheldon Caldwell, however, said seriously, "That’s right, my sister is a freshman at Veridia University, too. Oh, I have to tell my mom about this. She was just saying she wanted to teach my sister a good lesson, and this is the perfect opportunity. I bet my mom will prepare a whole special regimen for her. To avoid suspicion, all the other freshmen will probably have to ’enjoy’ it as well."
Nathaniel gave him a contemptuous look. "You’re a grown man. Every other word out of your mouth is ’my mom.’ Haven’t you been weaned yet?"
Sheldon flared up. "Why are you cussing me out of nowhere?"
"So what if I am?" Nathaniel challenged, raising an eyebrow at him. "Got a problem with it? We can go another round!"
Sheldon’s entire body was still aching, so he immediately backed down. "I’m the bigger man," he said, looking at Nathaniel. "I won’t stoop to your level!"
That afternoon, Vera received a call from Nathaniel. "Vera, I got your revenge for you. How are you going to thank me?"
Vera was completely bewildered. "Revenge? What revenge?"
’In Veridia, the only person she had a real grudge against was Susan Caldwell. He didn’t actually go and beat Susan up, did he?’
"I beat up Sheldon Caldwell," Nathaniel said nonchalantly. "But if you don’t mind, I can beat up Susan Caldwell next time I see her, too."
Vera was instantly exasperated. ’What is he trying to do?’ She pressed her fingers to her brow. "I can handle things with Susan Caldwell myself. If word gets out that a grown man like you hit a girl, it’ll be bad for your reputation!"
"And another thing, even though Sheldon is Susan’s brother right now... fundamentally, he’s my biological brother, too. You..."
She took a deep breath and then continued, "Did he do something to provoke you today? Is that why you hit him?"
Nathaniel was silent on the other end of the line for a full ten seconds. Just when Vera thought he wasn’t there anymore, he spoke. "Vera, you’re so heartless. I do you a favor, and not only do you not thank me, you actually criticize me!"
Vera: "..."
’She really couldn’t get used to his way of talking!’
"So, you feel sorry for Sheldon now?" Nathaniel asked coldly.
Vera was speechless. ’Where did that even come from?’ She was just reminding him not to get into fights with Sheldon over these things.
’What if—and it was a big "what if"—but what if she revealed her identity and returned to the Caldwell family one day? What if Sheldon made things difficult for Nathaniel then?’
All she could do was deny it. "Of course not!"
"That’s good, then," Nathaniel said slowly. "You still haven’t asked me if I got hurt fighting Sheldon today. Vera, you don’t care about me at all!"
Hearing an accusation like that, Vera tilted her head back to stare at the ceiling. ’I thought I’d already seen his arrogant, shameless side,’ she mused. ’I thought I’d seen the real him. But it turns out there are still more layers to his personality left for me to discover.’
’Was that... his version of pouting for sympathy? Does a guy like him even need comforting?’
’Based on her experience, if she didn’t placate him today, he’d just add this to her tab to be settled the next time they met!’
So she cleared her throat and said, "How could I not be concerned about you? I didn’t ask if you were hurt because I have complete faith that you’re the best in the world. How could a mere Sheldon Caldwell possibly lay a scratch on you?"
