Chapter 569: Pillow Talk (Part 3)

Chapter 569: Chapter 569: Pillow Talk (Part 3)

Over the years, Nathaniel Nathan had proven to the world that even without the Nathan Family’s backing, he could rely on his own exceptional abilities to become the brightest star at the security company.

Beckett Nathan was at a loss for words. He had always known his son had a mind of his own, but he never expected him to have been planning this since he was so young.

He had always thought Nathaniel was a block of wood, completely clueless about things like feelings and love. Now, it seemed he had been terribly mistaken.

He said softly, "Not all arranged marriages are unhappy. Your mother and I are very happy."

"That’s because you got lucky." Nathaniel draped an arm over his father’s shoulder and said calmly, "But I trust my own judgment. I’m going to be in charge of my own life, and neither you nor Mom will have a say in my marriage."

"You little punk!" Beckett Nathan chided softly.

But after his rebuke, he sighed to himself. Nathaniel wasn’t wrong for acting this way.

Nathaniel said quietly, "Look, I’ve laid all my cards on the table. Mom always listens to you, so you have to work your magic with some pillow talk."

A dignified, top-ranking leader, being told to use pillow talk? Only Nathaniel Nathan would dare say such a thing.

Beckett Nathan scolded, "What did you just say? I ought to give you a beating!"

"Bring it on!" Nathaniel laughed. "Feel free to try, provided you can actually beat me."

At this, Beckett Nathan glared at Nathaniel again. He was well aware of his son’s capabilities. The boy was now a renowned expert throughout the company; Beckett wasn’t sure he could have beaten Nathaniel even in his prime, let alone now.

He took a deep breath and said, "Since you’re here asking me for a favor, can’t you at least say a few nice things?"

Nathaniel looked at him and said, "You must get your fill of flattery at the office; why would you need it from me? We’re father and son, we should be straight with each other. I’ve already laid all my cards on the table, aren’t you going to give me something in return?"

Beckett Nathan genuinely felt that having a son like this was a real pain. He pulled Nathaniel’s arm off his shoulder and said with a glare, "I’m fine with it, but you know your mother’s personality. I can’t be the one to make up her mind."

Nathaniel smirked and summed up his father in one word: "Henpecked!"

Beckett Nathan wasn’t angered by this comment; instead, he laughed. "You’re not one to talk, kid. You and Vera Xavier aren’t even married yet, and from what I can see, she has you completely wrapped around her little finger."

He had clearly seen their subtle interactions earlier, and Nathaniel’s protectiveness of Vera was unmistakable.

Nathaniel wasn’t offended by the comment. On the contrary, he said matter-of-factly, "So what if I am? It’s none of your business!"

Beckett Nathan chuckled. "That’s right, I can’t butt in. This is your choice, after all. But are you really okay with letting Vera go to the study with your mother? Aren’t you worried she’ll give her a hard time?"

"There’s no one in this world who can give her a hard time," Nathaniel said slowly. "You don’t understand her now, so you don’t know how wonderful she is. Once you get to know her, you’ll definitely come to like her too."

"Besides, after we’re married, she’ll have to get along with Mom one way or another. It’s better if they adapt to each other early on. It’ll make their relationship easier."

Beckett Nathan mostly agreed with Nathaniel’s logic, so he asked teasingly, "You keep saying Vera is so great. What exactly is so great about her?"
