Chapter 565: Chapter 565: He Has Decided on Her (7)

Vera Xavier reached out and tugged Nathaniel Nathan’s sleeve. He glanced at her, and she quickly blinked at him.

Nathaniel Nathan was amused. ’I was waiting for her to do something like that.’ She was a smart girl. He said coolly, "But no matter how important a wife is, Mom is more important. That’s why I brought my wife to see you."

Vera Xavier let out a small sigh of relief. She smiled and greeted Brooke Mitchell, "Hello, Mrs. Mitchell."

This was actually the second time Vera Xavier had greeted Brooke Mitchell today. She had changed into a chic and demure Chanel-style suit, and her entire demeanor was much gentler than when they had met at noon. At the very least, her bright, sparkling eyes now held a hint of a smile.

But having already witnessed her formidable side, Brooke Mitchell was certainly not about to mistake her for a demure, sensible, and good-tempered lady.

In fact, Brooke Mitchell felt a slight pang of bitterness. She had seen the subtle exchange between Vera and Nathaniel. Her son was truly devoted to Vera; she had never seen Nathaniel treat anyone so well.

And while Vera Xavier might have a temper, she was still a clever woman.

Cleverness was the second impression Vera Xavier had made on Brooke Mitchell.

Even so, Brooke Mitchell still had no favorable impression of Vera Xavier. After all, Vera was a far cry from her ideal daughter-in-law. But Brooke was a woman of refinement, so she simply said with a placid expression, "Hello."

With that, she turned and walked into the living room.

Vera Xavier casually glanced around at the Nathan family’s decor and found herself momentarily dazed.

Just inside the door stood an exquisite curio cabinet. Its shelves held a variety of delicate trinkets, each one perfectly placed, speaking to the owner’s discerning taste.

Behind the curio cabinet was a Huanghuali wood table, accompanied by four chairs carved with a peony motif.

Farther in was a mahogany sofa set, unlike any style Vera was familiar with. It looked slightly old but was carved with intricate patterns of birds and beasts, giving it a rare and striking elegance.

In the center of the seating area was a large, square mahogany coffee table, on top of which sat a Zisha clay tea set.

Several paintings hung on the walls, the most prominent of which was a painting of red plum blossoms in the center, both elegant and stunning.

Potted orchids were placed in the corners, lending an air of refined elegance to the entire room.

Vera was inwardly astounded. With just a single glance, she could tell that the Nathan family’s furniture, while appearing simply refined, was in fact composed of unique and priceless pieces. The exquisite arrangement was a testament to the owner’s extraordinary taste.

Of course, Brooke Mitchell had already laid out slippers for Nathaniel, but there were none for Vera.

Vera sighed inwardly. ’You really can’t afford to offend your future mother-in-law before you’ve even stepped through the door.’ She mentally stabbed Susan Caldwell a hundred times over. She would make Susan pay for this.

’But that’s a problem for later,’ she thought. ’Right now, I need to figure out how to handle this little power play from my future mother-in-law.’

’If I just walk in with my shoes on, I’ll be seen as having no manners, and that’s another point against me.’

’But if I take my shoes off and walk in with just my socks, the floors in Veridia are already getting chilly in September. These thin socks won’t do anything against the cold seeping up from the ground. I could get sick, so that’s obviously not a good option either.’

As Vera agonized over what to do, Brooke Mitchell watched her, curious to see how she would handle the situation.
