Nathaniel Nathan took her hand and said, "That’s right. There’s no need to go easy on her anymore."
Vera Xavier looked over at him. "You believe what I said?"
Vera Xavier had never told anyone about this, because the Caldwell Family’s social standing was simply too high. To outsiders, she was just a girl who grew up in the countryside. If she were to reveal her identity, people would just think she was a social climber latching onto the rich and powerful.
That was why she had been striving to improve herself, to reach a point where she could face the Caldwell Family as an equal before taking action on this matter.
She had no desire to return to the Caldwell Family; she just wasn’t going to let Susan Caldwell keep using her identity to throw her weight around.
She just wanted to show the entire world that even without the title of a Caldwell daughter, she was still Vera Xavier. Susan Caldwell, on the other hand, would be nothing once that title was gone.
She was only choosing to tell Nathaniel Nathan about this now because she was afraid he would punish her when the truth eventually came out.
’Fine, I’ll admit it.’ She had always been afraid of Nathaniel’s brand of discipline. The memory of him spanking her at The Trellis Hotel was still vivid.
"I’ve said it before: I believe anything you say," Nathaniel Nathan said calmly. "Besides, when I decided to marry you, I was interested in *you*, the person, not your background."
Vera Xavier froze for a moment. She immediately recalled that when he’d first said he wanted to marry her, she had been an insecure young girl who failed every test and kept her head down, never speaking to anyone. Back then, she had nothing. Her own circumstances were far from ideal; the only thing she really had going for her was her pretty face.
She chuckled and asked him, "So, you wanted to marry me back then just because of my stunning, peerless beauty?"
Even someone as composed as Nathaniel Nathan felt his lips twitch. ’Peerless beauty?’ The girl she was back then didn’t exactly have much in common with that phrase.
He shot her a sidelong glance. Normally, his personality would have compelled him to tease her, but this time, he simply nodded. "Yes. I was confident that after marrying you, I could mold you into that peerless beauty."
With that, he pulled her to a stop in front of a nearby mirror in the mall. "See? You’re already starting to look the part."
Vera Xavier laughed aloud, and the somber mood from a moment ago vanished completely.
She glanced at Nathaniel Nathan, who still wore his usual cool and aloof expression. She used to think he didn’t have a humorous bone in his body, but now she realized how wrong she’d been. He actually had a surprisingly dry wit.
Nathaniel Nathan spoke again. "I’m the one making you more and more beautiful, Vera Xavier. How are you going to thank me?"
Before Vera Xavier could answer, Nathaniel Nathan added, "I’ll only accept one form of payment: you pledging yourself to me."
Vera Xavier’s lips twitched. She gave him a little push to the side. "I was clearly born beautiful. What’s that got to do with you?"
"Haven’t you heard the saying? ’It takes a man to bring out a woman’s true beauty,’" Nathaniel Nathan said, looking smug.
Vera Xavier frowned slightly. She felt the conversation was taking a strange, and slightly dangerous, turn. Sure enough, in the next instant, she heard Nathaniel Nathan say shamelessly, "Actually, I’ve always believed a woman is most beautiful when she’s blossoming beneath a man."
