Vera Xavier looked at Brooke Mitchell, who continued speaking. "From where I was sitting, I had a perfect view of you two. Susan came to bring you a drink, and you just jerked your hand, spilling it all over her. You did it on purpose!"
Vera Xavier just smiled and said, "Ma’am, if I really wanted to throw a drink on Susan Caldwell, I wouldn’t have done it like that. I’d have done it like *this*!"
With that, she picked up the drink from the floor. It wasn’t completely empty—about half the bottle was left—and she poured it directly over Susan Caldwell’s head.
Vera Xavier had never been known for her good temper. ’If Susan Caldwell loved framing people so much, then fine, let’s make her accusations a reality!’
Susan Caldwell hadn’t expected Vera Xavier to actually do that and froze on the spot. But after a moment of shock, a faint glint of triumph appeared in her eyes. ’The more aggressive Vera is today, the better.’
Though that’s what she thought, her expression twisted into one of utter grievance, and she burst into tears.
Brooke Mitchell was also stunned for a moment before saying in utter disbelief, "How can you be so unreasonable? Apologize to Susan this instant!"
’To Vera, Brooke Mitchell was just a stranger, but she hated it when people tried to slap labels on her.’
So she slowly explained, "From the very beginning, this whole incident was a setup by Susan Caldwell. Ma’am, I don’t know who you are, but I want to warn you not to be fooled by her. She isn’t as gentle and well-behaved as she seems. So if anyone should be apologizing today, it’s her to me, not me to her."
But Brooke Mitchell was in no mood to listen. She glared and said, "Are all young women so unreasonable these days? It’s clearly your fault, yet you’re trying to blame someone else. You think I didn’t see what happened? I saw it perfectly clearly!"
"The moment Susan saw you today, she told me what an especially good person you are. She said there were just some misunderstandings between you two, and she felt she had been in the wrong before, which is why she wanted to apologize and make up with you!"
"And yet you’re this unreasonable! Spilling a drink on her once was bad enough, but then you actually did it a second time! As an elder, I can’t just stand by and watch this happen. You will apologize to Susan immediately!"
Vera figured there was no point arguing with someone who had been completely brainwashed by Susan Caldwell. No matter what she said, the woman wouldn’t believe her. And from the way Susan was acting, it was obvious she was just using Brooke Mitchell as a weapon.
Besides, she didn’t want to let Susan Caldwell ruin the mood for her date. So, she ignored Brooke Mitchell and looked directly at Susan Caldwell. "What’s the point of all this?"
Susan Caldwell just kept crying, her voice full of sorrow. "Ma’am, I was wrong! I shouldn’t have seen her good grades and assumed she was a person of refinement. I shouldn’t have tried to be her friend. I should have just swallowed all the pain she caused me and never said a word to anyone!"
Hearing this, Brooke Mitchell’s heart ached for her. "You poor thing, you’ve really been wronged today. Don’t you worry, I will definitely get you justice."
"Ma’am, really, you don’t have to," Susan Caldwell said through her tears. "This is my own problem, you don’t need to get involved. It’s my fault for ruining your meal. I’ll treat you to dinner another day to make it up to you. Let’s just let things end here for today."
She was quite beautiful to begin with, and with tears streaming down her face, she looked utterly fragile and pitiable.
