Chapter 543: Chapter 543: Meeting the Parents (Part 1)
Vera Xavier took a deep breath and said, "Of course that’s not it. I just feel like I’m not good enough as I am now, and I’m afraid they’ll think poorly of me."
She had known back in Crestfall that she would have to meet his parents after arriving in Veridia. But now that the moment was upon her, she inexplicably got cold feet. After thinking it over, she realized it was probably because she cared about him so much; that was why she was so afraid his parents wouldn’t approve of her.
Nathaniel Nathan stared at her fixedly and asked, "Vera Xavier, what are you really worried about?"
His question stumped her. ’What am I worried about?’ She wasn’t really sure herself.
Cowardice wasn’t in her nature, so the only explanation was that she truly cared.
After a moment’s thought, she said, "So, is there anything I need to prepare for tomorrow?"
"You don’t need to prepare a thing," Nathaniel Nathan said, looking at her. "All you have to do is stay by my side."
Vera Xavier bit her lip lightly but ultimately nodded.
Nathaniel Nathan frowned slightly at her expression. He leaned in close and asked, "Are you sure you won’t reconsider my earlier suggestion?"
Vera Xavier looked at him blankly as he leaned in closer. The warmth of his breath ghosted over her brow and eyes, setting her nerves on edge.
She immediately realized what he was implying. Her face flushed, and she quickly changed the subject. "You haven’t eaten yet, have you? What do you want? I’ll go make you something!"
Nathaniel Nathan had wanted to say, ’The only thing I want to eat is you,’ but seeing how genuinely nervous she was, his gaze deepened, and he said nonchalantly, "Anything’s fine."
Vera Xavier giggled and boasted, "I’ll make you a bowl of noodles, then. I make amazing noodles!"
And her cooking was, in fact, quite good.
Nathaniel Nathan said nothing, simply watching as she skipped into the kitchen and bustled about. A wave of emotion washed over him. ’This is my girl.’
A warmth spread through his heart. For him, home was wherever she was. Only with her did he feel that warmth.
Nathaniel Nathan leaned against the kitchen doorway, watching Vera Xavier, his entire body relaxed. A feeling of pure bliss washed over him as he watched his girl bustling about just for him.
It was an incredible feeling, one he cherished.
Vera Xavier slept restlessly that night. An inexplicable nervousness had taken hold of her, and all morning, she asked him repeatedly what she needed to prepare. He never gave her a straight answer, only saying that all she had to do was show up.
Vera Xavier shot him a glare and went to pick out an outfit. Naturally, one should dress in a mature and dignified manner to meet one’s elders. However, Nathaniel Nathan chose an ankle-length, court-style dress with a waist sash for her.
The dress was gorgeous and ethereal, but it didn’t exactly scream "mature and sensible."
She protested, but he said nonchalantly, "I like it."
Vera Xavier froze. He elaborated, "You’re spending your life with me, not them. Whether they like you or not doesn’t matter. What matters is that *I* like you. That’s all that’s important."
Vera understood his unspoken message. ’He’s right. The person I’m going to spend my life with is him, not his parents. But if they don’t like me, he’ll be caught in the middle, which would be difficult for him. My life wouldn’t be very pleasant, either. That’s why I want to make a good impression on them.’
These thoughts calmed her down a bit. ’I’ve lived two lives. Why should I be worried about something like this?’
