But Vera Xavier sniffled and said, "What about me?"
She looked up at him after she spoke, her bright eyes brimming with indignation. "You’re a terrible boyfriend! You didn’t even take me to register for school! You have no idea—because you weren’t there, I almost got bullied today!"
"Who would dare bully you?" Nathaniel Nathan asked.
Vera Xavier pouted. "Susan Caldwell, of course! You should have seen it today. She actually teamed up with Wesley Kane to come after me!"
"What happened?" Nathaniel Nathan asked.
Vera Xavier immediately recounted the whole story of how Wesley Kane had come to cause trouble for her. At the end, the corners of her lips tilted up, and she said with a sly look, "Luckily, I’m quick-witted. I managed to defuse the situation by pretending we were just running lines for a play. Otherwise, my reputation would have been completely ruined today!"
Having your reputation ruined at school would be a huge hassle. It would mean the next four years wouldn’t be very pleasant.
Vera Xavier had already lived through a lifetime of miserable days in her past life. In this one, she would never go back to that kind of existence.
She needed to be in control of every aspect of her life.
Nathaniel Nathan, of course, knew nothing of this. He said coolly, "Susan Caldwell again."
Vera Xavier nodded. "I know, right? She’s awful! All she ever thinks about is how to bully me!"
She wasn’t actually good at tattling on people, but she felt that doing it in front of Nathaniel Nathan might help strengthen their relationship.
Besides, she didn’t know many people in Veridia and had no connections. She was just too vulnerable, and it would be a waste not to latch onto the powerful backer she had right in front of her.
Nathaniel Nathan’s gaze was cool as he asked Vera, "How do you know Wesley Kane was put up to this by Susan Caldwell?"
Vera then told him about running into Wesley Kane and Susan Caldwell the day before. She sighed. "I really didn’t expect those two would get together. The fact that Susan Caldwell managed to find him just proves she’s been spending all this time plotting against me!"
Nathaniel Nathan could easily piece together what she was saying. He asked her, "Do you need me to handle it?"
Vera Xavier grinned. "Of course not! I’m perfectly capable of handling such a small matter myself. If you get involved in a war between girls, it would be beneath you."
Nathaniel Nathan wasn’t surprised by her answer at all. She might look delicate and fragile, but she was never one to be trifled with.
She looked at him and added, "However, as my boyfriend, you do need to have my back on important occasions. Just you standing there is incredibly intimidating."
Nathaniel Nathan’s brow furrowed slightly. "So, are you indirectly saying I’m just a pretty face?"
"Of course not!" Vera Xavier said, looking at him. "There’s no pretty face in this world as handsome as you!"
The corner of Nathaniel Nathan’s mouth twitched. ’Is she complimenting me or insulting me?’
As if reading his mind, Vera Xavier added, "And what pretty face in this world is as capable as you!"
Nathaniel Nathan reached out and tweaked her nose. "Stop trying to flatter me. You think I can’t see right through your little scheme? You’re saying all this just because you came home late and were afraid I’d be annoyed from waiting and would hold it against you."
Vera Xavier rubbed her nose and pouted. ’Young Master Nathan, some things are better left unsaid! It’s no fun when you spell it all out! You’re so annoying!’
