Vera Xavier finished speaking, then leaned close to Damian Yale’s ear. "You should probably keep your distance from me, Senior," she whispered. "The last thing I want is to be targeted by the other girls the moment I set foot in this school. I’m here to study, not to get into arguments."
Her words were so blunt that Damian Yale was taken aback for a moment. ’She’s completely different from any other girl I know,’ he thought.
But the sight of Vera leaning in to speak made Autumn Rhodes, who was standing nearby, burn with resentment. ’Does she really have to get so close to talk to Damian?’
And it was true; the two of them were standing a little too close for comfort.
In reality, they still maintained a respectable distance, but in Autumn Rhodes’s eyes, it looked as if Vera Xavier was deliberately seducing Damian Yale.
Autumn Rhodes took a deep breath, her eyes blazing with fury. She decided to take action. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a string of beads, snapped the cord, and scattered them on the path directly in front of Vera Xavier.
The moment she saw Vera lift her foot to step on the beads, she suddenly yelled, "Vera Xavier!"
Vera Xavier looked back at her, seemingly startled, and at the same time, her foot came down. Everything appeared to be a perfectly normal reaction.
Autumn Rhodes was ready to watch Vera Xavier fall flat on her face. A smirk played on her lips. ’Doesn’t everyone praise Vera Xavier, calling her the prodigy with a perfect score in every subject? Well, I’m going to make this "prodigy" suffer a major embarrassment on her very first day of school!’
However, the unexpected can always happen. Like right now.
All she felt was something strike her on the nose—a sharp, throbbing pain. Meanwhile, Vera Xavier, the one who was supposed to be humiliated, merely slipped for a second before steadying herself. She didn’t fall, and she certainly wasn’t embarrassed.
Then she heard Vera Xavier’s clear voice ask, "Senior Rhodes, did you need me for something? Ah! Senior Rhodes, what happened to you?"
Autumn Rhodes reached up and touched her nose. Her hand came away covered in blood. The bead that had struck her clattered to the ground and rolled away.
"She’s bleeding!" someone exclaimed, quickly handing her a tissue.
At this point, Autumn Rhodes could no longer hold back. She glared at Vera Xavier and snapped, "You threw that bead at me!"
Vera Xavier looked utterly aggrieved. "Senior Rhodes, how can you say something so unreasonable? When did you see me throw a bead at you? Besides, where did all these beads on the ground come from? I didn’t see them a moment ago!"
Scattered on the ground were the beads of a purple crystal bracelet.
All the boys had been watching Vera Xavier. It looked like her foot had slipped, and then something had shot out and hit Autumn Rhodes right on the nose.
Damian Yale recognized the crystal beads. Autumn Rhodes wore that bracelet every day. He said in a low voice, "Those purple crystals are from Autumn’s bracelet."
The color drained from Autumn Rhodes’s face, but she recovered quickly. "My bracelet broke! I was calling Vera over to help me pick up the beads!"
Vera Xavier put a hand to her chest. "Oh, so that’s what happened. When you accused me of throwing a bead at you, you really gave me a scare! But... Senior Rhodes, are you alright?"
The delicate-looking girl’s eyes held a faint chill and a hint of derision. To Autumn Rhodes, it was a look of blatant provocation and mockery.
Autumn Rhodes’s gut told her Vera had done it on purpose, but her mind insisted it was impossible. ’Vera definitely stepped on them by accident. She had her back to me... how could she have pulled that off? How could it have been so coincidental?’
