Damian Yale was also visibly surprised. He’d always felt that exceptionally beautiful girls had a hard time focusing on their studies. Autumn Rhodes, for example; everyone praised her for her looks and her grades, but to him, she was still just an embroidered pillow—all show and no substance.
Vera Xavier, however, was the first student in the history of Veridia University to be admitted with a perfect score in every subject. That in itself spoke volumes about her abilities.
Damian Yale smiled faintly and extended his hand to Vera Xavier. "I’m Damian Yale, the president of the student council. Welcome!"
The surrounding male students were momentarily stunned. Damian Yale was notoriously arrogant and never offered to shake hands with anyone. It seemed this incredibly beautiful, perfect-scoring girl had truly piqued his interest.
Vera Xavier smiled but didn’t take his hand, simply offering a polite greeting instead. "A pleasure."
Damian Yale was taken aback. A female voice piped up from the side, "Vera Xavier, the student council president offered you his hand. How can you be so rude?"
Vera Xavier laughed and replied, "Don’t they say that all talented people are arrogant and have their own peculiar way of doing things? Well, I’m talented, so that means I’m allowed to be arrogant too!"
She smiled with warmth and grace, her eyes sparkling. A faint, sly twinkle seemed to dance at the corners of her eyes, adding a touch of adorable charm to her otherwise slightly cool expression.
Coming from a girl like her, no one would think she was actually being arrogant; they would only assume she was joking.
The crowd of onlookers all started laughing, and someone chimed in, "That’s right! Talented people always think differently from everyone else!"
"A perfect score in every subject—she’s definitely earned the right to be proud!"
"Hey, wanna be friends?"
The group laughed and joked around. Vera Xavier just offered a small smile. ’These guys are so lame.’
Damian Yale’s expression soured. He was handsome, had excellent grades, and was highly capable—no girl had ever rejected him before!
Seeing his reaction, Autumn Rhodes’s expression turned grim as well. She had been pursuing him for a year and knew him extremely well; she had never once seen him proactively extend his hand to any girl!
She had originally thought Vera Xavier was just another useless airhead who’d somehow gotten into the Veridian College of Liberal Arts, but she never imagined she was that freak who got a perfect score!
She knew Damian Yale valued ability more than anything. His initial interest in Vera Xavier was purely because of her score. But now that the person everyone assumed was a dork had turned out to be a stunning beauty, everything was different.
She walked up to Vera Xavier and said with a smile, "Xavier, I’ve heard so much about you. You caused a huge stir at the university before you even arrived. It’s true what they say: hearing about you is one thing, but seeing you in person..."
She was smiling, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
Vera Xavier had lived two lifetimes. What kind of person had she encountered the most? Manipulators who played the part of the sweet, innocent girl, of course. One look was all it took for her to peg this girl as belonging to that category.
Vera Xavier just smiled and said, "What can I do? I’m just that exceptional. So sorry to have been on everyone’s mind."
She said the words, but her face showed not the slightest hint of embarrassment.
Another wave of laughter went through the crowd. Such words would sound inappropriate coming from anyone else, but from the girl who got a perfect score, no one found it out of place. They were all students, so they knew better than anyone how incredibly difficult it was to ace every single subject.
The dork everyone had expected was completely different in person. It turned out she was quite an interesting character.
