Seething with frustration, Rowena Kirby reached out and knocked on Nathaniel Nathan’s door. After a good while, the door finally opened. He asked with a cold expression, "What is it?"
Seeing his completely expressionless face, Rowena Kirby felt her heart pound nervously, but she still forced a smile and said, "I came to invite you out to dinner. The cafeteria is out of food at this hour, after all."
Nathaniel Nathan asked her, "Who are you? And whether or not I’ve eaten has nothing to do with you."
Rowena Kirby quickly replied, "I’m Rowena Kirby..."
"Rowena Kirby?" Nathaniel Nathan cut her off. "Don’t know you."
With that, he shut the door again.
Rowena Kirby’s stubborn temper flared. She knocked on his door again. This time, it opened after a single knock. Just as she was about to speak, he cut in coldly, "I don’t care what your name is. This is your last warning. If you dare knock on this door again, I don’t care if you’re a woman—I will hit you."
As soon as he finished speaking, the door SLAMMED shut again.
Rowena Kirby’s face instantly flushed beet-red. In her entire life, with her prominent family background, stunning looks, and exceptional abilities, no one had ever spoken to her like that!
’He just threatened to hit me! He... How could he do that!’
Rowena Kirby was fuming, when a light chuckle came from nearby. "Well, well. I was wondering who would be so bold as to harass Deputy General Manager Nathan. If it isn’t our great beauty!"
The speaker was Mimi Gibbs, who was constantly at odds with Rowena. Their family backgrounds were comparable, their looks were equally striking, and their abilities were evenly matched. Over the years, they had clashed countless times, both openly and behind the scenes.
Now that Mimi Gibbs had caught her being rejected so harshly by Nathaniel Nathan, how could she possibly pass up the opportunity to rub it in?
So she continued, "I’ve heard that Deputy General Manager Nathan is as cold as ice. Countless women in the company are infatuated with him, but I never thought our resident beauty would be one of them. You’re certainly bolder than the rest, I’ll give you that, coming to find him directly. It’s a shame, though. Deputy General Manager Nathan has never been the chivalrous type. What a waste of our great beauty’s heartfelt intentions."
Normally, Rowena would have shot back a few choice words, but she had suffered too many blows today and couldn’t be bothered to deal with Mimi.
She bit her lip and turned to leave.
But Mimi had no intention of letting her go so easily. She blocked Rowena’s path and said, "I thought our great beauty always considered herself irresistibly charming. Giving up so easily isn’t like you at all. Usually, if Deputy General Manager Nathan didn’t know who you were, you’d practically force him to learn. Why so timid today?"
Rowena was normally domineering, and today she was already simmering with pent-up fury. After Mimi’s repeated provocations, she finally snapped. She raised her hand and slapped Mimi across the face. "Get lost!"
But Mimi Gibbs was no pushover; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been feuding with Rowena for so many years.
If Rowena hadn’t thrown the first punch, it might have ended there. But the moment she did, Mimi retaliated, shouting as they fought, "Oh, look who’s lashing out because she’s humiliated! Don’t take it out on me just because you can’t get Deputy General Manager Nathan! If you have to blame someone, blame yourself for being too ugly to catch his eye!"
Rowena yelled back, "Mimi Gibbs, don’t think I don’t see right through your petty games! You’re just bitter because I’ve always overshadowed you! Well, today I’m going to beat you into submission!"
And so, the two women, supposedly the most brilliant in the company, were now brawling in front of Nathaniel Nathan’s door.
