Vera Xavier added, "If you think I have a bad attitude, or if you just don’t want to see me, I can always give your Young Master a heads-up and have him fire you. That way, you won’t have to be so conflicted."
Ronan Tate glared at her, but she just broke into a smile. "That would be perfect. I could find a handsome butler of my own to help me take care of things. You’re just too ugly."
Ronan Tate was so angry he felt like hitting someone. This girl was truly infuriating! ’How am I ugly?’ he fumed inwardly. ’I might not be as strikingly handsome as the Young Master, but I’m still a good-looking guy!’
He muttered sullenly, "How could the Young Master possibly like a girl like you! I’m going to tell him what you said."
"A grown man, and you’re going to tattle?" Vera Xavier said nonchalantly. "But by all means, go complain about me to Nathaniel Nathan. We can even make a bet on it and see whether he believes you or me."
Ronan Tate was rendered speechless. There was no need for a bet. He had seen with his own eyes how Nathaniel Nathan treated Vera Xavier—he doted on her as if she were a precious treasure cradled in the palm of his hand.
After she spoke, Vera Xavier smiled and added, "As for why Nathaniel Nathan likes me so much... I’ve thought about it, and I can only come to one conclusion: it’s because I’m just that amazing. That’s why he likes me so much."
Ronan Tate grumbled, "You’re really..."
"Conceited?" Vera Xavier cut him off. "Actually, to a certain extent, being conceited is just being self-confident. If you don’t have confidence in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to like you? Am I right?"
Ronan Tate almost subconsciously agreed with her, but he caught himself just in time. Her words sounded perfectly reasonable, yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
So he muttered sullenly, "I’ll be here every day from now on to deliver groceries. The Young Master said that if you need anything, just let me know, and I’ll buy it and bring it over."
Vera Xavier smiled and said, "Okay." She figured she must be in a really good mood today, or else she wouldn’t be teasing Ronan Tate like this.
’Sometimes,’ she thought, ’it’s not so bad to act like the slightly spoiled, headstrong girl my age. A change of pace feels really nice once in a while.’
Ronan Tate may not have liked her, but he was still incredibly diligent in his duties. He didn’t leave until he had put everything away neatly.
Vera Xavier looked around the vast, somewhat empty villa, a flicker of dissatisfaction in her heart. ’This house is just too big,’ she thought. ’Living here all by myself is kind of boring.’
Then she realized she was starting to miss Nathaniel Nathan. He had only left this morning, and she was already thinking of him. The feeling was quite peculiar—an experience she had never had in her previous life.
At that moment, Nathaniel Nathan was running drills with his squad. His special assistant, Nolan Rowan, was thoroughly displeased with him.
Since the beginning of the year, Nathaniel Nathan had hardly acted like a Deputy General Manager at all. First, he took over a month off for his marriage leave. When the vacation ended, he returned to duty for a few days before taking more time off. Nolan had called him several times, urging him to come back to deal with the mountain of work at the company, but it was as if Nathaniel hadn’t heard a thing.
He’d finally managed to get the Chairman to intervene, but instead, Nathaniel was sent off on a mission. Between one thing and another, that was nearly two more months gone.
Nolan Rowan thought, ’I must be the most miserable special assistant in history.’ On top of his own duties, he also had to cover the responsibilities of the Deputy General Manager.
So when the Chairman finally summoned Nathaniel Nathan back, ostensibly for a mission, Nolan didn’t give him so much as a pleasant look.
