Shane Caldwell’s face lit up when he saw Vera Xavier, but his smile froze when he noticed Nathaniel Nathan sitting beside her. ’Isn’t Nathaniel a soldier? Isn’t he supposed to be busy? How does he have time to see Vera off?’
Their meeting on the train today was a genuine coincidence, but it left Shane Caldwell with complicated feelings.
Nathaniel, of course, had already spotted Shane. Though his expression remained unchanged, he was furious. He had never gotten over the fact that Shane had once written Vera a love letter.
Vera figured she should at least say hello since she’d run into an acquaintance—and a classmate, no less. But something about the atmosphere felt off. Just then, she heard Nathaniel say, "Isn’t that your class monitor? Why don’t you go say hi?"
The more Vera got to know him, the more she realized that not only was he not as cold as he seemed, but he also had a habit of saying the opposite of what he meant.
He was probably saying that because he’d noticed she was about to greet Shane, and he wasn’t happy about it. He didn’t want her to talk to him at all.
Vera was at a loss. ’Having a husband whose moods are impossible to read and who says the opposite of what he means is completely exhausting.’ Now she didn’t know whether she should say hello or not.
Shane seemed to sense the awkward atmosphere and took the initiative, standing up to say, "Vera, what a coincidence!"
Vera laughed awkwardly. "Yeah, Class Monitor, what a coincidence. Are you heading to Veridia, too?"
Shane, ever the troublemaker, replied nonchalantly, "That’s right. We made a pact back when we were deskmates to get into Veridia University together. I didn’t manage to become the top scorer in the province, but I still got in, so I guess you could say I kept my end of the bargain."
Vera felt a vein pop in her forehead. ’When did I ever make a pact with him to get into Veridia University together? Is he saying this just for Nathaniel to hear?’
Nathaniel turned to Vera. "Is that so?"
"Of course not," Vera denied immediately. "Veridia University is just the best school in the country, so it’s a goal for a lot of students. It was for me, and it was for the class monitor, too."
After explaining, she turned back to Shane with a smile. "Congratulations on getting into Veridia University, Class Monitor!"
"Congratulations to you, too," Shane said, smiling at her. "We can continue to be classmates. I’ll take care of you."
’I don’t need anyone taking care of me!’ Vera thought.
She snuck a glance at Nathaniel’s thunderous expression, then quickly linked her arm with his. "I heard your unit is based in Veridia," she declared. "From now on, whenever you’re on leave, you’re not allowed to go anywhere. You have to come to campus and spend time with me!"
Her words might have sounded bossy and unreasonable, but Nathaniel thoroughly enjoyed them. He replied simply, "Okay."
’She probably doesn’t even know that what I love most is being by her side. Since she brought it up herself, of course I’ll have to do an even better job of it.’
Vera’s face immediately lit up. "I knew you were the best! I’m so happy. Now I can see you whenever I want!"
Shane watched as her face, which usually held a hint of coldness, became filled with a radiant smile. The sight was jarring. She looked breathtakingly beautiful, but that smile wasn’t for him.
Shane felt like he’d taken a critical hit. Any trace of smugness he’d felt moments ago vanished into thin air.
